Tried to dig deep for 1950s suspense/murder movies. "Rear Window" did flit through my mind, but I swatted it away as not quite jibing with "suspense" and left it blank.

Hitchcock is filed in my brain under mystery and horror. SImilar to, but not quite 100% in line with, suspense. A movie can be suspenseful without being a mystery, or vice versa.

Hitchcock is frequently referred to as The Master of Suspense. You're filing system could use an update.

Of course, Alex's reading of the blank as "this many" would still give too much information for the bottom row. (I can't figure out whether his blank readings of late are pre-written, improvised on his own initiative, or requested by TPTB for him to improvise. They bug me, especially when he reads the blank as "what," thereby undermining the clue-as-answer construction!)

The sides of a barrel are NOT "slats"?!? That seemed massively negbaity, and even looking it up I don't see how "slat" is wrong.

knew it was a hitchcock movie...can name most of his movies, but have never seen any of them or know much about any of them...for some reason i thought rear window was from the 1940s and that one didn't come to my mind...just threw a dart and chose vertigo

For some reason I keep saying 212. Not sure why I am mixing it up with the boiling point of water.

If you break six bones skiing, you now have 212... and the boiling point of water is 206 due to the altitude.

Off topic - but great to see another skiing enthusiast. Breaking bones, not so much.

I went on a very, very brief Hitchcock jag about 3-4 years ago...by which I mean that I finally got around to seeing Rear Window and Vertigo. For some reason, I typed out Vertigo, and clicked my DVR's "+30 second/-10 second" buttons to get to the answer, but while Maltese Falcon showed up as a wrong answer, I quickly erased it and got to Rear Window.

They gave plenty of clues, and it might be possible to get it by just knowing some basic plot points. Suspense and 1950s should be a giant orange arrow (yes, it changes color) to Hitchcock. Yes, Hitchcock did horror too - Psycho and The Birds being the most viscerally disturbing - but those were (Psycho barely) in the 60s. The other clue that snapped me away from Vertigo and back to Rear Window was the "objects of attention" part - the basic plot of "Rear Window" is "Guy in wheelchair spies on his neighbors and sees some disturbing stuff", which...yeah, now that I think about it, I probably first learned from The Simpsons as well.

I never came close to focusing on the phrase "objects of attention" - I got bogged down trying to extract meaning from the dog and the dancer, which as I've said, I didn't remember. Fascinating that the phrase itself, rather than familiarity with the movie, seems to have helped people...

Most of the definitions I've looked at say a downspout carries water "to" a drain, but Merriam-Webster calls it a vertical pipe used to drain rainwater from a roof, so one might slide through on that one...But as far as I know a "discharge" is either the water itself or the action of expelling the water, not the object that does the discharging...

One thing I’ve noticed is that whenever a FJ! clue has wording that sounds even a little bit off - there’sa reason for it.

Although, that said, for some reason the phrase “object of attention” sounds almost French. Probably because I’m pretty sure “object” and “attention” are both virtually unchanged in French (I think). If Hitchcock has failed me, I would have just written “Some French movie I’ve never heard of”.

I’m willing to let the drain response go - it’s not nearly as egregious as the jack o lantern response yesterday.
