Fourth Podium Poll for 11/5/2019 - Tuesday TOC (SPOILERS)

Post by opusthepenguin »

Well, you couldn't beat Dhruv even if you picked up all the trash. But you could come in with an even more respectable second place than the one managed by Rachel. And, sigh, if you didn't do that you could still sneak past Rob "It wasn't my night, but I handled defeat with humor and grace and at least I played Final Frickin' Jeopardy!" Worman.

Clues are presented in the order in which they occurred except for the Daily Doubles since those don't count toward a fourth podium score.

Only miss for me here was slip. I definitely got a strong board in DJ with history/lit/geography categories.

Fourth podium could have built up a good head of steam if you nailed the literary characters and doubling on the Havisham DD.

I got Polonium (and Radium). That's all I care to mention.

I'm only taking $3600 from the fourth podium. That includes the $800 for Adam's rib tickler since they wouldn't have taken that money away even after rightly reversing the decision on Rob's response. Those winnings double to $7200 with the easy FJ. Not a great chance at a wildcard, but not terriblehorrible either. I almost pulled the trigger on mull and Seattle, which would have netted another $2400 and a final total of $12000 after FJ. Now that would be sitting fairly pretty.

I negged with Dhruv in guessing radium and curium. Even as I guessed them, a voice in the back of my head suggested that curium came later and polonium would be a better choice. I did not listen to that voice because it tends to be a smartass.

In keeping with my comment that these boards played easier for me than last nights (40,200 Coryat vs 31,400) I also got more Lach trash (10,200)

FWIW, one of Marie’s Nobel citations specifically mentions radium and polonium, so it’s definitely in that category of Things That Come Up.

I had slip and Arizona. I also said "Adam's ribbing" and got iconoclast.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

The Paul McCartney song Mull Of Kintyre made that one an easy get.

Only Utah and Arizona for $2800.

I would have swore that UW was in some city other than Seattle.

I just thought of a point that might not be obvious. Don't check the box for the Adam's rib clue unless you said Adam's rib tickler. If you got that clue right by saying Adam's ribbing, you don't get the trash points. I'm 99% sure that I could add this clarification to the Correct Responses provided in the first post without zeroing out the stats. But I don't want to risk it. (And I'm 64% certain that adding the clarification in the poll itself WOULD zero out the stats, so no way am I trying that.)

Apparently I'm pretty average. 6/7 on things that polled 45% or higher, 0/7 on things that polled below 45%.

I'd be watching FJ from the sidelines based on my 4th podium performance. I know who the wildcats are, and the name of that small village. But that's not enough to come back from negging on the new name for Deseret - an embarrassing miss from home since the topic has come up very recently.

You just get the nominal values for DDs.

Huh. For coryat, that's definitely the case. But I've always thought of lach trash as money you could hypothetically have picked up from the fourth podium without ever winning a buzzer race. You just "buzz in" when no one else does or after they're done giving wrong responses. DD money isn't available via this method.* Is this not the consensus understanding of "lach trash"?

---------------
* Unless, I suppose, you picked up the immediately preceding clue from the fourth podium. Huh. I hadn't thought about that. This puts a lot of money potentially on the table for this game. The clue right before DD2 was a triple stumper. So anyone who got the Color Purple narrator correct might justifiably claim the following clue for its board value or even hypothetically for the amount they feel they would have wagered. To further complicate matters, the clue Rob picked after that was DD3. What if I'd done the same thing after getting DD2? What if I had gone all in on both DDs? Suddenly I'm at $14400 going into FJ. I won this game from the couch, I tells ya!
