I went with "garden statuary" which in regular play would probably warrant a BMS. As a FJ response I imagine it is incorrect.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2019 11:46 amThis one at-home judge says take:
garden gnomes (that's what Elise & Joyee had)
gnomes (can't be ruled incorrect since "Garden" was in category name)
lawn gnomes (nothing makes "Lawn" incorrect added information)
and I'm sure there are other variations of the response that would pass muster as well

Re: Friday, November 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Alex's impressions are pure money. And by "pure money", I mean he earned me $200 in Coryat because I didn't know Bogart was in the Matlese Falcon, but rang in immediately after he read the clue. Kinda shocked I ran the category, as my knowledge of movies pre-1970 isn't great, and pre-1960 is pretty awful. Only one of the movies was a real "oldie" to me, and I was surprised that I ran the category given that I was scared of it from the title. Oh, and no Wizard of Oz? I guess it only fits the category for the first 30 or so minutes...
I had the "Sung" part for the grandpa of North Korea, but blanked on the easiest part of the name. But "that moonie guy" (Sun Myung Moon) got mixed in my head, and made me clam. Speaking of which, what's the J! convention for certain Asian names? Case-by-case basis? The family name is generally first in China and Korea, so would "Kim" count? Is it "last name" and not "family name", so "Il-Sung" would count? Because either one would be a little weird. (Almost as weird as not needing to specify the full name for Jeff Bezos' wife.) I love the Olympic convention of all-caps for family names when they show the players competing on TV - whether it's the first name or last name.
I had "orthopedic surgeon" for "orthopedist". Too specific, judges? They're listed as separate specalties on https://health.usnews.com/doctors/specialists-index , but I clicked on orthopedist and got nobody. I also found a website for "West Idaho Orthopedics" which starts has the sentence "An orthopedist, or orthopedic surgeon..." I've never heard of "orthopedics" as being distinct from "orthopedic surgeon".
The good news is I came up with the same response as one of the contestants for FJ!. The bad news is it was "flower pots". Stupid, in retrospect - I mean, what's German, quirky, made of terra cotta, and goes in your garden?

I'd certainly give it to you. I'm wondering if "orthopod" would have been accepted. It's a trade jargon nickname used a lot in clinical settings by health care workers, but as slang it's not in the common vernacular.talkingaway wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2019 12:29 pm I had "orthopedic surgeon" for "orthopedist". Re: Friday, November 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I imagine (and this is complete imagination) that in the pre-game contestant briefing, they probably mention that jargon and slang nicknames and terms are discouraged unless explicitly asked for, or are REALLY well known. (For example, "Hawkeye" Pierce - nobody's going to say Benjamin Franklin Pierce.) As another example, I don't think they'd like "Bogey" for "Bogart", even though if you reference "Bogey" in the context of acting/film/cinema, it unambiguously means Bogart. Or, for a medical example, "What is milk of amnesia?" wouldn't exactly be apropos for "This drug made the news in 2009 because of is role in Michael Jackson's death" - they want propofol, even if that's a very common medical slang name.AFRET CMS wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2019 2:14 pmI'd certainly give it to you. Notice I said "discouraged" and "don't think they'd like". I imagine the judges' bench would be active after a slang answer like that....but better to play clean and keep the judges out of the decisions, if you can. I think for "orthopod" you should get BMSed at worst...but "should" and "would" are different beasts.

Great reaction. I also loved Seema's enthusiastic applause toward Elise when she got them. Seema probably knew the game was pretty much over for her at that point and switched immediately into congratulating her opponent.

Absolutely. No question. The only reason that wouldn't work is if "lawn gnomes" were a separate sort of thing from garden gnomes.
Gotta say no on that one, yeah. Unless garden statuary of any sort--Frances of Assissis, angels, Virgin Maries, squirrels, rabbits etc.--were rare prior to 1847. (The word "popularized" gives you a little wiggle room, but I suspect not enough to get to a positive ruling.)

Re: Friday, November 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Nice! Yeah, I paused the show pretty much accidentally at that exact point. We always pause DDs to give ourselves 5 seconds to come up with the response before the contestant blurts it out. In this case, I also paused it to express the same reaction Elise had. "Hmm! All three." And then, like Elise, we were both able to come up with all three. Under the lights? I can imagine freaking out and not being able to get there. Kudos to Elise for calmly going down the list and getting them all.

Re: Friday, November 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Oh well. What image hosting sites do other people use that seem to work for JBoard?
In any event, my thoughts on the game. I still like the Day 1 dress best, but this one was pretty good too. It was hard to root against Seema or Joyee, but I really want to see another dress. Well done to Elise for earning the opportunity to put one on display.
Joyee missed an opportunity (that I wouldn't have had the guts to take) to say, "What about Breakfast at Tiffany's?" But of course Alex wouldn't have realized that he was supposed to rule Joyee correct by saying, "I think I remember the film".
Both adult penguins negged with "osteopath". All controversy aside, I suppose that response is definitively wrong because a doctor of osteopathy is a D.O. and the clue specified an M.D. I suspect they anticipated the incorrect response and had a DNR on Alex's card.
Mrs Penguin negged with flower pots for the FJ, just like Seema. Better than leaving the spot blank, of course. But flower pots don't seem "eccentric" and it didn't seem likely that they weren't in common use prior to 1847. I've never seen a terra cotta garden gnome, unless that's the standard material underneath the paint. But garden gnomes seem eccentric enough that the response was plausible. So score one for the male of the species at chez Penguin.

Interesting...I was 4/4 seeing your images earlier, and the latest Google photo works fine, but the Dropbox link was a bust (Firefox/PC if it matters). As for image sites, not sure if anyone has ever had trouble with posted images from imgur, but it's always worked for me.
Gotta call out the wagering, in a good way! Probably none of them knew what wagering scenario they were in, and yet, Seema bets it all when getting FJ right was her only chance, Joyee DOESN'T make the all-in suicide wager...it warmed my heart. Adding the extra dollar would've made his wager perfect, but meh, he kept 3rd locked out, and I would've eaten my own right arm if Elise bet $0.
Instaget FJ.
