Re: Friday, November 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
It's not everyday there is a 3-women game. I had "Ladies' Night" by Kool & the Gang in my head. Even though I knew the WWE category would be more pop culture than actual wrestling knowledge I still had to laugh when it came up.
Different spelling but Gabrielle's last name of Merken made me think of the, ahem, movie-making item whose definition I would only know from Whoopi mentioning it more than once on The View.
Champ Alex played about the same as yesterday and it's tough to win twice with Coryats in the 10000s.
The FJ! clue had me doubly wrong as I wrote Wuthering Heights and changed to Bleak House. Alex professionally saved his "Draccent" until after the responses were revealed and did not dare do it when reading the clue. On wording alone I would have needed 1890s to possibly get it and 1897 would have been an instaget.
As written the clue had me failing to grasp I needed a title character for my response and instead I was thinking of descriptive homes. My bad not giving myself a chance to get it.
DD3 was a spot for what to do, what to do?
Alex: 14300
Emma 6800
Gabrielle: 6600
Only a $2000 clue remained. Gabrielle could not overtake Alex. Alex had a lock in place. Gabrielle went for $1000 and stopped the lock as the last clue went TS.

Re: Friday, November 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Bram Stoker was Irish, not British. Therefore Dracula is not a "British novel"
(Someone please correct me if I'm drawing any wrong conclusions here.)
ETA: It was first published by a UK publisher though. Maybe that makes it British.
I guessed right, though.

Bram Stoker was living in London operating the Lyceum Theatre (and had been for the better part of two decades) when he wrote Dracula.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 11:15 am Bram Stoker was Irish, not British. Therefore Dracula is not a "British novel"

Trivia question: Who else had "Dracula" as the answer in their second FJ?

Seemed unnecessarily vague for an FJ clue, maybe they thought "battlements" would steer people in the right direction?

That has to be the intended TOM; knowing that a "battlement" was part of a castle. I admit that I did not know the term. I focused on "broken", trying to think of characters living in poverty.

They rammed the ramparts, they battled the battlements, they cased the casements

This is certainly a case where you can know "too much", i.e., enough to make yourself a danger to... yourself.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 11:15 am Bram Stoker was Irish, not British. Therefore Dracula is not a "British novel"

Re: Friday, November 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Ireland was technically in union with Great Britain at the time. Stoker would’ve been a British citizen. However, he’s not really viewed as any more British than Wilde or Shaw would be. As a result, I think it’s a poorly worded question.
(I answered it correctly as a sort of “what else could it be?”)

No clue on FJ. I kept thinking of French authors.
Man, though, if they every do a remake of the original Charlie's Angels, Emma is a shoo-in for Kate Jackson.

Yeah I guess that was the intended path there, though it seems like a bit more of a leap. than FJs usually are. I said Robinson Crusoe, thinking it was an overly dramatic excerpt of describing his island home.

Re: Friday, November 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I thought the clue was pointing at a castle. Thought of both Dracula and Frankenstein. Considered Shelley vs Stoker and indeed thought Mary was much more clearly British. I haven't read the book, so I'm not sure if Victor Frankenstein lived in a castle. But there is an actual Frankenstein Castle that apparently inspired Shelley, so I'm guessing that he did? Feeling a bit hosed on this one.

Re: Friday, November 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Coryat: $34,200 (42R, 4W)
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Ellison, Vince McMahon, fortress, degauss, Ted Kennedy, kung fu, Alexis Carrington
Alex pointing to herself and mouthing, “That’s me!” during her introduction was awesome, my wife and I both laughed.
Ran Ends in SS, Entreprenheirs and...the Slammy Awards. The clues for that last one were pretty fair considering how everyone (understandably) stayed away from it until the end. (Incidentally, Sika is pronounced SEE-ka, not SICK-a.)
Another solid day from the fourth podium, $9200 for second place.
Dracula was the very first thing that popped into my head for FJ, but I too didn’t think it was a British novel, so I too went for Oliver Twist.

Poll request: 'Oliver Twist' was my incorrect response for Friday's FJ

For FJ I went with Frankenstein.
Even if Stoker was associated with England, he is commonly termed as an Irish novelist.
