And during the the pre-online test days. You'd take the test, they'd grade it, come back in the rooms and call out about 10-15 names. Everyone else was thanked and told to go home.
This still happens at occasional special events. The auditions at Trivia Nationals worked this way. I can't remember exactly but I believe my estimate at the time was that around 70-80 people took the test and they called about 40 to audition in two sessions.

The one time I managed to go to one of those in 2005, room with a good 150 people in it, they kept 4.

Yep. Been there, done that in Atlantic City.

because of one of those Atlantic City tests, I ended up in a scary area of South Philly (is there a non-scary area of South Philly) at 1am buying a pair of pantyhose...

was hoping they would've asked me about that at the audition last year, but it's far too long for TV.

This one seemed pretty literature-heavy to me - 9/50 questions by my count (10 if you count Twilight)
I actually did an analysis a few years back, and all of the tests I looked at had about 10 literature questions, be it fiction, nonfiction, the Bible, playwrights, etc. Thankfully, that's one of my strong areas!
Thanks, now I know to brush up on theater and recent bestsellers (two weak areas for me) before I inevitably need to take the quiz again. Did you notice any other useful patterns in that analysis?

That's my recollection, too. One has to assume that they were using test scores as their screen because WECIB, but one also has to assume that the cutoff used wasn't 35.

At my first audition that same year, they kept 9 of maybe 70 hopefuls... and then I was one of the first three called up and the first to be interviewed. My file probably still has notes from Glenn about how anxious I was. There's some back story but nothing suitable for television.

Gender was likely a factor besides score. I have no evidence for this, except the behaviour of the team at TN. The producers were doing all they could to get strong women at trivia nationals to try out. Cyndi, despite being on the show previously, was encouraged several times to try out.

Finally got around to this, seemed the easiest of the 3 to me, and got the best score of the week with 41. Of course, that may not have happened if I had taken it for real at 11:00.

I'd never seen this before, so I thought I'd put this out there: the source of the old "35 is the cutoff" rumor is apparently a press kit put out by Jeopardy in the 80s.

Claire McNear is working on a Jeopardy book and is absolutely worth a follow if you're a Twitter person, by the way!

Just for the record, the link to that 1989 LA Times article, which Claire McNear posted on Twitter last week, had already been posted on JBoard last year by hbomb1947:
