Didn't I hear somewhere that Love Story was being rereleased for its 50th anniversary?
Finnish composer is a Pavlov for Sibelius.
Had John Adams for FJ, figuring the man didn't want the Veep job.

Re: Tuesday, February 11, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I too used sports (specifically, hockey) as my guide for the time zone category. I'm pretty bad at geography besides perhaps cities and borders - throw in a river or a mountain, and I'm lost. But I found all 5 clues pretty easy, which is rare for a geography category. Hockey got me Vegas and Detroit easily - I know I have to stay up really late to watch the Bruins play in Vegas, and I know the entire Eastern Conference is in the Eastern time zone. Sports also helped with Milwaukee - Brewers are slightly late in playing their weekday games, and it's west of Detroit, so it had to be Central. The Forest Jump was a help, not a hindrance - knowing that Central and Pacific had already been used made me more confident that Salt Lake City had to be Mountain. West Virginia is east of Ohio, where I lived, so I knew it had to be Eastern (despite my third grade teacher trying to convince me Ohio was in the Central time zone instead of Eastern when I was getting ready to move at the end of third grade from Boston to Cleveland).
Speaking of hockey, I also got Foo Fighters because there's a picture of NHLer Zdeno Chara with Dave Grohl running around my timeline - Big Z loves grunge, Nirvana, and the Foo Fighters. I probably could have pulled it from the picture of Grohl, but might have had a brain freeze that would stop at "that guy in Nirvana who's not Kurt or Krist".
I also swept DeVito, even if the only thing I can remember from Twins (other than the basic fact that the two are genetically modified twins, with Arnold getting all the good DNA and DeVito being the leftovers) is the way Arnold stopped a car alarm by tilting a car over a certain angle. (They turn off because they think they're getting towed.)
Came close to a rare (for me) triple sweep in J! with crayola, but blanked on Irish for clover = shamrock. I'd probably pull it in DD time. Definitely in FJ! time.
The Marconi DD was easy for me - even if I can't think of Marconi without imagining him playing the mamba and singing "We Built This City" in my head. Didn't know Finnish composer = Sibilius, but I'm here to learn!
Impresario I somehow got. I decided to be aggressive and ring in on a bottom row clue for Coryat purposes - usually not advisable for me, but it seemed "complex" enough to be the right response.
Finally followed my own FJ! advice on keeping it simple. Banker + Washington = Hamilton. Didn't throw away my one shot.

Totally surprised by the reversal on Lech Walesa -- it's a tough name and her pronunciation seems more than close enough to me. Kristyna was robbed!

That. I was just on the verge of saying, "Great! After last night's wagering fiasco I get to see all three make perfect wagers."
Of course that was before Danyelle's was revealed. I wonder what the hell she was even thinking, knowing how many people DO make overly-large wagers from second place, and leaving herself open to be caught from behind in the event that's what happened tonight.
Yeah, I know, her misguided wager didn't cost her the game. As somebody said on this board long ago, you might decide to go from your third-floor apartment to your car on the street by jumping out of the window to the sidewalk way, way, below. And you might even survive. That doesn't make it the right decision. And you can't expect to survive a second such attempt.
What happens tomorrow night? All three bet $0 on FJ?
Please, Lord, give me a chance to go on the show and show how to wager properly!

The trivia gods did their job: anyone who can get Piers Anthony deserves a win.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Coryat: 40,200
48 R/0 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: tintinnabulation, étouffée, Guglielmo Marconi (DD), vista, (Lech Wałęsa), Love Story, alloys, warrens
Growing up in the '80s, Solidarity and its leader were often mentioned on the news. They always seemed to say it "Lech Fluenza," like he was some long-lost cousin of the coronavirus. I was floored when I saw his name in print for the first time.
I hope no one missed their chance to answer "What's Up?"
I figured the $2000 Symphony clue was hinting at the Schubert/Schumann confusion, but I didn't have the guts to ring in. Likewise with impresario.
I was sad that Danyelle got outbuzzed twice on the West Virginia time zone clue.

I'll take these tongue in cheek versions of Batman over any of the new cine noir offerings the last two decades. But, I still say no to Robin, never again
Shame on you Opus! Don't forget your raisin'. The Penguin is the most epic of all the Batman arch villains. I don't know if he gets the credit for creating the typecast, but the Burgess Meredith version from the TV show is just an absolute hoot. Danny DeVito did a good turn with it as well.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 8:07 pmIt's just as well. He's a troubled individual. Today's game made me realize I don't know my Kaddish from my kibbutz...
Anyone know where I can study basic Hebrew/Yiddish words used in the show?
Also, I would have definitely responded with "Who is Oswald Cobblepot?" for the Penguin clue, just to flex.

For J! purposes as far as Yiddish/Hebrew do separate searches for their words in the Archive. Not all clues will be relevant, but especially look for categories that fit to get five in one swift play. The repetition will repeat again. As you start to learn some words then you can reinforce it by doing a search for each of the ones that come up a lot such as the two you mention above.BrigadierSolo13 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 1:30 am Today's game made me realize I don't know my Kaddish from my kibbutz...

In less than 20 minutes you can be up to speed for what the J! writers like.

You run a risk any time you try getting cute like that. In this case, you're safe. But imagine a clue like "Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Halle Berry have all played a character with this name."* You ring in confidently with "Who is Selena Kyle"... only to find out that Halle Berry's catwoman was named Patience Phillips.BrigadierSolo13 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 1:30 am Also, I would have definitely responded with "Who is Oswald Cobblepot?" for the Penguin clue, just to flex.

Nice story about Ms. Ng:
Watching 'Jeopardy!' helped this woman learn English — and now she's a contestant
I'd love to know how she affords to get to 80 countries. Damn.

I didn't like this either. Kind of like when they accept "the Mooch" as a correct response. Accepting nicknames just invites controversy.

Oof! Lots of Lach trash again. I appreciate that contestants are going to the high value clues to try and catch up, but after 3 or 4 straight TSs, maybe go a bit higher up? I don't know if today amounted to a fourth podium victory but it felt that way. When I saw FJ, I predicted a triple get and they didn't disappoint, but oh that wager...

I agree as he may not have known his actual name. (Sully could be short for Sullivan). I wonder if they would take Ike for Eisenhower.

I had one where the correct answer was "clapboard," a type of siding for houses. I pronounced it "clabberd" (correctly). Trebek got that what-is-that look on his face, and I re-pronounced it "clap - board," enunciating each syllable as clearly as I could. I wanted to give him the pronunciation he was expecting, correct or not. I didn't want to chance a ruling from the judges.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 8:18 pm CC says "Walesa" which makes it difficult for the hearing impaired to follow the explanation for the reversal. This is why I won't try any fancy pronunciations if I get on the show. I'll pronounce everything phonetically as though it's an English word. I may sound like an idiot. I may get a snotty correction from Alex. But I'll get the points.
