Instaget FJ. Pretty sure this was just a few days before his "peace for our time" line.

Coryat: 40,800
49 R/1 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: steakhouse, George Wallace, anaconda (DD), Mississippi River, Tiber River (DD), S.E. Hinton, Okinawa, walk around the world (DD), World Cup

I wasn't 100% on FJ!, but I figured "1930s leader who wants to avoid involvement in war and considered (what I assumed to be) Germany and Poland/Czechoslovakia to be 'faraway countries'" had to be the infamously ineffective appeaser Chamberlain.

Yep, and this is one where too much knowledge was a bad thing. In most contexts, aka means red, so I went for the Red Planet. (It turns out akatsuki, meaning dawn, is unrelated to that version of aka.)

They reversed graveyard from correct to incorrect because it was not the word used in the poem, so cemetery is likewise a neg.
Sprinkles are for winners.

That covers Oscars. And it also covers an Oscars/Opera crossover category with Streep gaining her 20th Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Florence Foster Jenkins, the world's worst opera singer. But what's your default Opera category guess?

I thought about him too, but he doesn't fit the category.
Yeah, sometimes I skip right over the category with the fast forward and don't notice it when the question comes up right away. My bad. I would have gotten it otherwise.

Default opera guess = Mozart. If they need a title, The Magic Flute

Frustrating FJ for me as I instagot as far as "Not Churchill, the other guy" and then spent the next 29 seconds trying to remember his name. Classic brain freeze.

I'm not surprised that someone guessed Churchill. I bit more surprised that two of them guessed Churchill!

Sorry, I was off by a year. It was 1996. http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=3552
Ah, okay, that was one of the games I looked at in my search.

My scoresheet for that game shows:

Bernie 11900+4299=16199 (2nd win)
Deb 3800+3201=7001
Ted: 3500-500=3000

and using the infinite FJ! resource:

FJ! Category: POETS

Clue: In 1879 the children of Cambridge, Massachusetts gave him an armchair made of chestnut wood

Correct response:
Spoiler
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Thanks for clarifying Josh and congrats. Just in case you did not notice, your game is archived.
Wow, thanks for digging this up! I just hope it can get on the Archive for real one day.

Just writers, I'd say. Since music and visual art don't need translation.

And let me thank Rocky and Bullwinkle for helping me solve that 1996 FJ.
I thank Rocky and Bullwinkle for turning my life around and being such splendid role models all my life.

Had a longer shift last night.

Ran Restaurants and Latin, 0/5 in My Job in the Movie. Creed is utterly unfamiliar to me.

Brain said George Wallace, mouth said McGovern. Oops.

I could've taken 400 guesses on what day "big day" was referring to and never gotten to "wedding day". That clue just seemed miles wide open.

How was "Mississippi River" a triple stumper?

Yes, I got Silver Spring, Maryland this time. Still think that's a very obscure town to pick in the top box.

No guess on FJ! Even "begins with CH but isn't Churchill" somehow didn't set the wheels in motion. Once again I prove to only "half-know" something, because I'm aware that there is someone named Neville Chamberlain but I doubt i could even place their existence in the right century or country.

Lach trash: Steakhouse, suffragette, free gift, Mississippi

Three. Mars is also an inner planet.
So, are you from Jupiter or Saturn?

I get the idea that "inner" may mean inside the asteroid belt in some very nuanced contexts, when speaking on a solar system scale. But used loosely, I don't think Mars (and Earth for that matter) get that label. "Rocky" planets is more apt, especially now that Pluto has been put in it's place  .

I still would have clammed, because I NHO that program. But I would have been comfortable with picking Venus because I don't think a spacecraft could survive very many orbits of Mercury without a lot of SPF-infinity sunblock. And it has an atmosphere. From hell.

I stayed clam on suffragist because I thought they might want suffragette.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

Suffragette should be the safer option, since it was the British term.

It's nice to learn that garden snake is interchangeable with garter snake. I'll feel much more comfortable with snakes now.

It should also be noted that a graveyard is not a private place where no one embraces. The reference is more specific...

For this FJ I was fooled by the European-is-not-British "heuristic." Is that fancy for "rule-of-thumb"?

Bumping this to alert those who don't read the "New old games" thread that Mr. Curtis's episode just got a significant push towards completion in J! Archive, thanks to MarkBarrett's quick work and pannoni4's upload to archive.org of the game starting at the seventh clue of DJ.
