That would be my favorite. But I also knew Something was one of his. And Taxman, and I'm Happy Just to Dance with You. Piggies, I Me Mine, Within You Without You, Here Comes the Sun. Those are the ones that come to mind.

Some of us don't like to brag.

Seriously, there have been lots of game day threads where I've gotten the impression that, as a board, we didn't do well on an FJ. Many times, once the weekly poll rolls around, I find out we did fine. It's just that the people who got it right didn't really have anything to say about the clue. "I knew it was that Percy Jackson guy and I knew his name was Riordan" doesn't make for much of a post. And for me, that's about all I'd have to say. Not really worth it. To spice things up, I might add that I wasn't 100% sure on the first name, possibly because of interference from the first name of the former L.A. mayor, so I made sure to only include the last name in my official response.

The L.A. mayor didn't pronounce his name RYE-ur-dun, though, did he? I remember it as closer to Reardon with maybe a bend in the first vowel sound to stretch it to one and a half but not two syllables. I was surprised when Alex gave the pronunciation he did to author Rick's last name, but Wikipedia says that's correct. Wiki has no opinion at this point on pronouncing Mayor Richard R's last name.
That's what makes it surprising. It's not so uncommon a surname, and I've never heard it pronounced with a long i before. A cover-up of its Irishness?? ;)

Fair enough. But maybe it's still kind of a hole in the knowledge base if he doesn't know that Lennon/McCartney officially get credited together on Beatles songs, even when it's known which one did the heavy (or even all the) lifting. mpletely and inarguably true.
So I was right in assuming that part of the key to eliminating the wrong answers to that clue was the whole Lennon/McCartney collab deal...and that was something I definitely have known for a long time. That's reasonable if it's a DD or FJ!, where you have a little time to Think! it through - but if you're itchy on your trigger finger, and only know that Lennon and McCartney wrote most of the Beatles' catalogue, it's not completely unreasonable to pick the one you think did more. My trigger finger itched, and it was only the hindsight of a couple of hours that gave me clarity - and, of course, the help of Jboard, so that we could work it out.

According to a 1990 Chicago Tribute article on a book that researched the matter, John beat out Paul, but mainly because he was much more vocal about claiming contributions in the media - and the methodology they used is obviously imperfect and debatable. George was a distant third, and Ringo, as always, was in fourth place, only writing 2.7 songs.

I saw Mark's post of how many time Riordan (was Alex's pronunciation correct? I would assume it sounds like Reerdon.) has come up, so there was no excuse for his name not being familiar to me.
Andy, I was going to post on both counts (Ritter and the pronunciation of Riordan). Yup and yup

Why in the world would you even post this nonsense? Just because something is a blind spot for you, don’t presume to speak for the trivia community at large. You do know that Dolly Parton, johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Chet Atkins and Buck Owens, to name but a few, have all covered the Beatles, right? And that for two decades they were among the most-covered of songwriters? And this is all coming from someone whose Pop Music record is among his lowest in LL.

If they gave the author and asked for the series he wrote, would have had it down in a second. Just didn't click the other way, sadly.

"Remembrance of Things Past", my old enemy, how I loathe thee.
I just watched this damn show 10 hrs ago and I already don't remember the author again. This one may be a lost cause enemy for me too.
Read "How Proust Can Change Your Life" and maybe it will stick
Proust did change my life. I now reflexively throw up two middle fingers at Proust, Remembrance of Things Past, and madeleines.

(No, I couldn't have won that semi anyway. But when you're NHO'ing a French literature FJ and your dad is a French major who rails about the quality of literature taught in schools these days, and all you can think during FJ is "I have no idea what this is, my dad knows what it is, and I will never live this down"...)

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Publishers Weekly has dubbed this former middle school English teacher turned bestselling author "Storyteller of the Gods"

Andrew Cramer: 11400-5401=5999
Sidra Condron: 4600+4600=9200
Gary Patent: 16800+6001=22801 (New Champ)
Why would Andrew bet anything more than $600? You know that Gary can cover while still finishing ahead of Sidra if he misses; so Gary will bet what he did ($6,001); he's not going to bet zero. The only way Andrew was going to win is if Gary got it wrong. Not only did Andrew cost himself a shot at first by betting too much, he missed out on the extra grand for second place.

I'll never understand how so many "smart" people continually mess up FJ! wagering. It's staggering to me.

It's pretty self-evident what he's thinking, given that that wager puts him at $16,801 if he's right. He's guaranteeing that he wins if he's right and Gary's wrong, regardless of whether Gary makes the "right" wager.

Maybe he's afraid that Gary will next-level him by saying "Well, if Andrew only bets $600, then I don't need to bet anything at all to win", so he's trying to next-level the next-level.

Sure it's pretty evident what he's thinking, it's just sub-optimal thinking. He's not trying to "level" anything, if he was he would realize that if he misses he can't win anyway so he might as well wager everything. Besides, you don't try to level those who aren't capable of multi-level thinking themselves. The only Jeopardy players I can think of offhand who would even be worth this kind of thinking during their regular season runs would be Arthur Chu and James Holzhauer.

Don't try to read anything more into it than just an ignorant wager.

I thought the George Harrison clue was bogus. Any reason I should know it was him, since Lennon and McCartney are far, far, FAR more known for their songwriting?!
Statements like that absolutely infuriate Beatles fans, FYI.

The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Oh yeah? Pretty sure a lot of folks have heard of Joe Cocker, and a couple of the different Beatles covers he's done, considering they've been used as theme songs for TV shows, commercials, etc. His version of With A Little Help From My Friends is considered the seminal Beatles cover.

An entire generation of rock n roll listeners may know Come Together more from Aerosmith instead of the original.

Elton John's cover of Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds went to #1 on the charts.

Fiona Apple's Across the Universe added a new generation of people to listen to it, as the lead track of the Pleasantville soundtrack.

Granted, I'm a huge Beatles fan, but I came up with this list in about 5 minutes.

Yes, but there's also about quality over quantity ... John pretty consistently owns the #1 song slot in most fan voting polls with "A Day In The Life", but the top 5 usually contains both "Something" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", meaning that George has 2 of the top 5, squeezing either John or Paul down to 1 song in the top 5.

I'm a John > the other Beatles guy, by far, but there was a good solid 6-8 year stretch where George was considered the most successful Beatle, post breakup.

Like many I knew the FJ clue was referring to the Percy Jackson series immediately then struggled to remember the author's name. Riordan came to me and I managed to get it written down before the music stopped, but I wasn't at all confident I was correct. Seems like this one's going to poll pretty low.

That's who I was thinking of! I'm terrible at faces, good at names. I finally decided it was my P-Chem professor, and let it go at that (dark haired white male).

TLDR: We didn't all subscribe to Tiger Beat back in the day :). (Although my sister did read "Ingenue", lol..)

In re the Beatle's contributions, AM radio made it to my ecosystem in time to hear most of their career arc, and I NEVER had any idea who was doing what. How were you supposed to know that from radio play or records? I knew their 4 names and that Ringo played drums, and that was it. It wasn't until I bought fake books (sheet music with chords and lyrics) that I even knew Lennon and McCartney did all most the writing. I still don't know if one did lyrics and one did music in general but I assume they were pretty collaborative. After playing this music for 40 years, I am just discovering on you tube that John was the rhythm player and a pretty damn good one at that, I love learning his exact licks.
