Joe Biden has named Kamala Harris as his vice-presidential running mate for the 2020 election.
UPDATE: Harris accepted the nomination during the online Democratic National Convention, becoming the first Black woman and the first Asian American candidate on a national ticket.

Sumner Redstone has died at the age of 97. Redstone was an attorney and media mogul who got his start in the entertainment industry with his father's movie theater chain, National Amusements. Over the next 70+ years, Redstone acquired such companies as Viacom, CBS, MTV, Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon, Blockbuster Video, Dreamworks, and Showtime. His name will always be associated primarily with Viacom.
His 2001 autobiography was titled A Passion to Win. In 2012, Paramount Pictures renamed the administration building on the studio lot as the Sumner Redstone Building.
Redstone appears three times in the J! Archive.

The Chateau Marmont, hotel to the stars, is being turned into a private club, although least one restaurant on site will remain open to the public.
Built in 1929 on Sunset Boulevard, the Chateau Marmont has long been known as a short- and long-term residence for celebrities old and new. The hotel has been featured in many movies, songs, and novels, and yet it may be best known for being the site of John Belushi's 1982 death by drug overdose in one of its bungalows.

To me the definitive Sumner Redstone is found in the several interviews he did with Charlie Rose, findable by Googling those two names.

Old news now, but I thought I posted it back when.
On June 20, Tiz the Law won the Belmont Stakes. While the race is usually the 3rd leg of the Triple Crown, this year it was first, due to the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness being postponed due to COVID concerns. Additionally, the race was shortened to 1 1/8 miles, from its usual 1 1/2 miles. (That's 9 furlongs instead of 12, in case you were wondering.) This is also the first time the Belmont has been the first leg of the Triple Crown to be run.
The Kentucky Derby will be held next month (Tiz the Law is the favorite), with the Preakness following in October.

Given this year's increased attention on vote-by-mail and absentee ballots, it seems worth knowing that the Postmaster General is a fellow named Louis DeJoy, who was appointed in May.

This seems right up Thorsten's alley:

In addition to a series of coronavirus restrictions, state authorities have placed eight counties under additional quarantine because of an exotic and invasive insect known as the spotted lanternfly.
...
Residents of the quarantined counties -- Warren, Hunterdon, Mercer, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Salem and Somerset -- are urged to inspect their cars for the bug before leaving,

English actor Ben Cross had died at the age of 72 while being treated for cancer. Cross is remembered for his performance as Jewish runner Harold Abrahams in the 1981 Best Picture winner Chariots of Fire. His film credits also include a villainous turn in 1995's First Knight and an appearance as Spock's father, Sarek, in the 2009 reboot of Star Trek.
Cross appears twice in the J! Archive, both times in clues that reference his performance as 200-year-old vampire Barnabas Collins in the short-lived 1990's TV series reboot Dark Shadows.

I think we can add on to this that Harris has chosen "Pioneer" as her Secret Service code name (Biden will still use "Celtic" as his).cinemaniax7 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 4:29 pm Joe Biden has named Kamala Harris as his vice-presidential running mate for the 2020 election.

Churchill Downs announced today that the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby, which has been delayed this year from its traditional first Saturday in May until the first Saturday in September (September 5), will be run without fans. Previously, plans had been to allow some fans in the grandstand area and in suites, but to leave the infield area closed.

The record for most expensive baseball card has been broken at an auction yesterday.
A 2009 autographed Bowman Draft Prospects "superfractor" of current Angels superstar Mike Trout sold for $3.84 million. This card is a 1/1, to use the hobby lingo, meaning there is only one copy in existence.
The previous record was $3.1 million for a copy of the T206 Honus Wagner card.

J! loves its stock market tickers...
https://www.fool.com/investing/2020/08/ ... al-averag/
Exxon Mobil (XOM) is getting delisted from the DJIA, at the time the longest tenured member of the index (92 years, joining in 1928). It's being replaced by Salesforce(CRM, which is just an awesome ticker symbol for it)
Proctor & Gamble (PG) will become the oldest after the change, (88 years, 1932).
In the same move that's booting Exxon:
Pfizer (PFE) is being replaced by biotech firm Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN...they won't ask about this one)
and Raytheon (RTX) is being replaced by Honeywell (HON), who's coming back -on- the list after getting cut back in 2008.

Former Georgetown head basketball coach John Thompson has died at the age of 78. Thompson played college ball at Providence, and was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1964, winning two championships with them before retiring in 1966 to pursue a career as a coach. He was named the head coach at Georgetown in 1972, and spent the remainder of his career there, retiring in 1999. In 1984, he became the first Black head coach to win the NCAA Division I crown when the Hoyas defeated the Houston Cougars in the final. The next year, Georgetown was the prohibitive favorite to retain the title, behind returning center Patrick Ewing. However, they were defeated by 8-seeded Villanova in the final, a game considered one of the biggest upsets in history (Villanova is still the lowest-seeded team to win the title) and the last college game contested without a shot clock. Thompson was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1999.
Thompson's son, John Thompson III, was the head coach at Georgetown from 2004-2017.
