... whereas I saw the question and immediately thought that Greg Popovich would of course be a legitimate answer. It didn't say that answers had to be former coaches or players, it asked for people who had "formerly" (that is, in the past, prior to this season) coached/played for the Spurs.

My internal debate was whether assistant coaches would count, but I figured you couldn't get to 10 without counting them.

... whereas I read the word "formerly" as "used to," which, I believe, is the interpretation most people (like the_phil) would come to. I do not think I would have accepted Popovich if he'd never left and come back. Irrelevant, however, since he did.

3. Name a woman who has won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (previous to 1948, the award was called the Pulitzer Prize for Novel, so I’m talking 1948-present).
Bonus: for a one point deduction in your score, name the work for which she won
.

If you didn’t answer Morrison or Lee on this one (or incorrectly), you were in good shape. Unfortunately, that wasn’t very many of you!

Here is the complete list of women who have won:

2011 A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan
2009 Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout
2006 March by Geraldine Brooks
2005 Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
2000 Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri
1995 The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields
1994 The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx
1992 A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley
1989 Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler
1988 Beloved by Toni Morrison
1985 Foreign Affairs by Alison Lurie
1983 The Color Purple by Alice Walker
1973 The Optimist's Daughter by Eudora Welty
1970 The Collected Stories of Jean Stafford by Jean Stafford
1966 The Collected Stories of Katherine Anne Porter by Katherine Anne Porter
1965 The Keepers of the House by Shirley Ann Grau
1961 To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

1. Name a 2011-12 season NBA head coach who formerly played for or coached the San Antonio Spurs. Bonus: for a one point deduction in your score, name the team he was coaching this past season (10).

I did not mean to cause any trouble in answering Popovich. I interpreted the question as "formerly" only applying to playing for the Spurs. So, I went for Popovich as: Name a 2011-12 season NBA head coach who coached the San Antonio Spurs as leaving one spot open for at least knowing the Spurs current coach. I feel guilty in only scoring two points and then getting one taken away for the gimme bonus when my knowledge was so lacking on this question. Thank you for the kind judging.

I was ready to drop the opening Spurs question until I got to the governors Q at #2 which was even worse for me to even get one name.

4. One of the versions of “The Scream” by Edvard Munch recently sold for $119.9 million, placing it at number seven on the list of the seventeen most expensive paintings ever sold (listings are based on inflation adjusted values in most cases). Name another artist whose work can be found on this list.

Here is the list (into which I have inserted the recent Munch sale into its correct position):

1. Jackson Pollock: No. 5, 1948 ($140 million in 2006; $151.8 million inflation adjusted value)
2. Willem de Kooning: Woman III ($137.5 million in 2006; $149.1 million inflation adjusted value)
3. Gustav Klimt: Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I ($135 million in 2006; $145.3 million inflation adjusted value)
4. Vincent van Gogh: Portrait of Dr. Gachet ($82.5 million in 1990; $139.5 million inflation adjusted value)
5. Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Bal du Moulin de la Galette ($78.1 million in 1990; $132 million inflation adjusted value)
6. Pablo Picasso: Garcon a la Pipe ($104.2 million in 2004; $120.3 million inflation adjusted value)
6 1/2. Edward Munch: The Scream ($119.9 in 2012)
7. Pablo Picasso: Nude, Green Leaves and Bust ($106.5 million in 2010; $106.6 million inflation adjusted value)
8. Vincent van Gogh: Portrait of Joseph Roulin ($58 million in 1989; $101.7 million inflation adjusted value)
9. Pablo Picasso: Dora Maar au Chat ($95.2 million in 2006; $102.7 inflation adjusted value)
10. Vincent van Gogh: Irises ($59.3 million in 1987; $102 million inflation adjusted value)
11. Andy Warhol: 8 Elvises ($100 million in 2008; $100.9 million inflation adjusted value)
12. Vincent van Gogh: Portrait de l’artiste sans barbe ($71.5 million in 1998; $95.3 inflation adjusted value)
13. Gustav Klimt: Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II ($87.9 million in 2006; $95.2 inflation adjusted value)
14. Peter Paul Rubens: Massacre of the Innocents ($76.7 million in 2002; $93 inflation adjusted value)
15. Francis Bacon: Triptych 1976 ($86.3 million in 2008; $87 inflation adjusted value)
16. Jasper Johns: False Start ($80 million in 2006; $86 inflation adjusted value)

5. Name a future President who served in the House of Representatives with another future President.

This is from Wikipedia:

Congressman Jackson served with Congressman Madison (1796–1797)
Congressman Harrison served with Congressman Tyler (1816–1819)
Congressman Buchanan served with Congressman Polk (1825–1831)
Congressman Adams also served with Congressman Polk (1831–1839), and later served with Congressmen Fillmore (1833–1835; 1837–1843), Pierce (1833–1837), Johnson (1843–1848), and Lincoln (1847–1848)
Congressman Garfield served with both Congressmen Hayes (1865–1867) and McKinley (1877–1881)
Congressman Nixon served with Congressmen Johnson (1947–1949), John F. Kennedy (1947–1950), and Ford (1949–1950). Congressman Ford later served with Congressman Bush (1967–1971).

7. Name an author who has hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list for adult fiction this year (2012).

As I mentioned, part of this question was accidentally left off, so I accepted #1s from any fiction list (except for those listed under children's or graphic books). As it turned out, the only one you guys named not on the hardcover list was E.L. James - we know what kind of books you've been reading, Magna and goforthetie!!

I thought the most popular response would be more evenly split between Patterson and Grisham.
