New York Yankees lefty Whitey Ford has died at the age of 91. A second-ballot Hall of Fame selection, Ford pitched from 1950 to 1967 and remains the Yankees' all-time leader in wins, innings pitched, and ERA+ among starting pitchers. He won both the MVP and Cy Young Award in 1961 and was a member of six World Series champion teams.

Nicknamed "Whitey" for his blond hair, Ford was also known as "The Chairman of the Board."

Ford was the pitcher on the mound during the 1955 World Series when Jackie Robinson stole home for the Dodgers — the last time anyone stole home in a World Series game.

"Whitey Ford" was the correct response to Final Jeopardy when future 2-time Newbery Award-winning author Lois Lowry appeared on Jeopardy in 1974.

I seem to recall researching it one time and deciding that the clue must have asked about him being voted into the Hall of Fame. It never occured to me before to wonder who the 5-time champ mentioned in the article was, but I bet we could figure it out.

Rafael Nadal wins the French Open against Novak Djokovic. It was his 13th French title. With the win, he ties Roger Federer for the most Men's Grand Slam titles in history at 20.

He's now an astounding 100-2 at the French Open.

And in fake Nobel news, have a blockquote

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54509051
Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson have won the 2020 Nobel Economics Prize for their work on auction theory.

The Stanford University game theorists have helped in developing formats for the sale of aircraft landing slots, radio spectrums, and emissions trading.
...
Prof Wilson developed a theory for auctions where the value of the object on the block is uncertain beforehand but ends up being the same for everyone - for example, the value of radio frequencies, or the volume of a mineral in a particular area.

He also developed a theory as to why rational bidders tend to place maximum bids that are below what they estimate the actual value of the object to be: they are worried about the so-called "winner's curse" - overpaying to win the auction.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

The Los Angeles Lakers won their 17th NBA title, tying the Boston Celtics for most championships won by an NBA franchise.

CORRECTION: With the Lakers victory over the Miami Heat, forward LeBron James did NOT become the first player ever to win NBA championships with three different teams, despite what I'd read in the media. Thanks for catching that, MinnesotaMyron!

Nope. His teammate Danny Green also did it last night, and John Salley and Robert Horry did it before that.

Margaret Nolan, who played Bond's masseuse Dink in the movie Goldfinger, passed away October 5. She appeared in the title sequence of the film painted gold, with clips of Bond movies projected onto her body.

(Not to be confused with Shirley Eaton, who played Jill Masterson, who died of "skin suffocation" in the film by being painted gold.)

Triple post. Sorry, not sorry. It's a cute video.

@Stanford

The #NobelPrize committee couldn't reach Paul Milgrom to share the news that he won, so his fellow winner and neighbor Robert Wilson knocked on his door in the middle of the night.

The Tony award nominations were announced today for a season dramatically curtailed by the coronavirus. In an interesting turn of events, the only person nominated in the Lead Actor in a Musical category is Aaron Tveit from Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Only four musicals were eligible for awards, and all the nominations came from three of them. (Sorry about your luck, cast and crew of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical.) Neither of the other two musicals (Jagged Little Pill [based on the Alanis Morissette album] and Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) have a male leading role. According to Tony rules, Tveit still has to be voted for on 60% of ballots in order to win, so he's effectively running against "no award".

Merriam-Webster dictionary changed its definition of “preference” after Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett was accused during her confirmation hearing of being “anti-LGBTQ” for using the term "sexual preference." Merriam-Webster made the change later the same day, citing as "offensive" the usage of "preference" to refer to someone's sexual proclivities. The dictionary site also cites "sexual preference" as a separate listing, again labeling the term as offensive.

Asbestos, QC, CA, is now Val-des-Sources, QC, CA.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-54608836
The small Canadian town of Asbestos that decided it needed a rebrand has done away with the name derived from its mining heritage.

The Quebec town, home to some 7,000 people, voted for "Val-des-Sources" as its new moniker.
...
Asbestos won't be changing its town signs immediately, said Mr Grimard, who suggested it could be the end of the year before the formal, legal switch.

CBS All Access (becoming Paramount Plus in 2021) miniseries: The Stand

The book came out in 1978 and expect it to hit the bestseller charts again later this year. J! likes that kind of stuff. :) The previous miniseries version was in 1994. The book is a door stopper with the uncut version over 1100 pages.

Whoopi Goldberg will play Mother Abigail.

*************
The 400th episode of NCIS will air this November with its 18th season after beginning in 2003. It spun off from JAG.

Mark Harmon is Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
David McCallum is Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard

Spin-offs are:
NCIS: Los Angeles
NCIS: New Orleasns

**********
Game of Thrones prequel series: House of the Dragon based on George R.R. Martin's novel, Fire & Blood

*********
Netflix series: The Haunting of Bly Manor and loosely based on Henry James's The Turn of the Screw and a follow-up to The Haunting of Hill House which was loosely based on the Shirley Jackson work.

Quibi's founders, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Ellison, announced today in an open letter that the streaming service will be shutting down, just six months after it started operating. “Quibi is not succeeding. Likely for one of two reasons: because the idea itself wasn’t strong enough to justify a standalone streaming service or because of our timing."
