Re: Monday, November 16, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
J! can be a funny game. John was good enough for a 24,300 average Coryat yet could not solve today's FJ! clue.
Alex made sure viewers understood why Kelly tied with Andy to begin the DJ! round got to pick first.
Andy was +13000 on DD2 and DD3 and that was not nearly enough as John led by 3800. John had a huge advantage on the buzzer which was good for the lead entering the FJ! round and nothing more. The contestant carousel has ejected several champs this month that looked good for a possible streak. We'll see if Andy buckles in with the leather strap unlike many who ignore it on the amusement ride.
The FJ! category had instantly put the correct name on my short precall list. I added Patrick Henry as second choice and took a flyer on Button Gwinnett overr James Oglethorpe in case the clue went south.
No way my solve of the FJ! clue should only be getting it up to 50% success rate when counting the contestants. I don't know if Kelly was a holdover from last week's taping day? John certainly was there for the Friday FJ! clue. Think, McFly!
The boys in the barracks will have all kinds of ways to tease John for his miss. After they congratulate him for the win of course.
Nice artwork by Andy to add a little sketch to his correct response.

Re: Monday, November 16, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
One of Eugene Finerman's unarchived games featured an FJ something like "Renaissance man, 'he snatched lightning from the heavens and the scepter* from tyrants'". I think I got that one, and I definitely got this one.
* I'm not actually sure how they spelled "scepter" but I'd hate to think that upwards of 20,000 men died so we could go on spelling it the same old way.

A disease caused by heavy drinking is in the bottom row and a DD?
That was the biggest shocker until only one player got FJ.

Instaget FJ. Like most others, kinda shocked only one person got it.
Here's a bonus clue for The Celebrity's Booze:
You have failed this actor if you haven't tried one of his aptly-named Nocking Point Wines.

Whenever good old Ben Franklin comes up in Final I think of Emily Zhang, who lost 2005 Back to School game 5 when she spelled it "Bejamin". If LinkedIn directed me to the right person, I think she may have just finished medical school, which she indicated was her goal in her 2005 Teen Tournament interview.

I don't know where, or under what circumstances, or how many centuries ago, I read that phrase (which was attached to a bust of Franklin), "Eripuit caelo fulmen, mox sceptra tyrannis:" He snatched lightning from the heavens, the scepter from tyrants.
God knows how I remembered it after all this time, but an instaget is an instaget.

Coryat $43,800 (51R, 1W)
DD 3/3
FJ
Can't say instaget FJ, as Washington crossed my mind for a split second, then I saw "thunderbolt."
Struggled mightily in the dam category which normally would be right up my alley. Coinflipped wrong between Hoover and Grand Coulee. Bordering Guyana wasn't enough info for me to rule out Brazil and Suriname, and "dependence on oil" confused me. 2/5 in furniture, clammed on credenza because I didn't think of it as a cupboard. 47/50 in everything that wasn't one of those.
Lots of players lately who look great in their first appearance and then get knocked out in Game 2...

Re: Monday, November 16, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
FJ! took me awhile, because dangit, I always have problems with "centuries". Just say the 1800s, please. (Well, unless you're talking specifically about the year 1900, but that's another can of worms.) After my brain fog and briefly going to Edison, who lived in the 19th century but would have been eulogized in the 20th, I finally snapped back to the founding fathers. I did think Washington, but the word "thunder" was the keyword (pun intended). Nice little drawing by Andy to illustrate precisely how to get the solve.
For the Ike and Tina clue, I'd be tempted to respond "What's Tina Turner got to do, got to do with it?"
No doubt, cirrhosis can be caused by booze, obesity, and hepatitis C. In turn, that cirrhosis can cause liver cancer. In fact, I would say cirrhosis is a sign of a disease, NOT a disease in itself - in the same way bleeding of the gums is a sign of gingivitis, and not the disease itself. Thus, the clue was pretty much wrong all around - perhaps they wanted "liver cancer", and inappropriately (IMO) accepted cirrhosis. If you want cirrhosis as a response, it's simple to pin - put in "scarring". You could even do it backwards - "Cirrhosis is this process that happens to the liver".

That clue was terrible and improperly pinned, and actually inaccurate - and correcting it would be EASY, although it might make it a lower difficulty clue.Bamaman post wrote:Mon Nov 16, 2020 6:55 pm A disease caused by heavy drinking is in the bottom row and a DD?

Were the J! writers implying anything about the current president with this clue - "Part of Penn, this business school once had the goal of its grads becoming 'pillars of the state'"?

Maybe, but if so, they've compromised the clue by including "once had". As far as I can tell, it still is their goal.Spiny Norman wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 10:15 pm Were the J! writers implying anything about the current president with this clue - "Part of Penn, this business school once had the goal of its grads becoming 'pillars of the state'"?

I went with George Washington. I read Benjamin Franklin's autobiography kind of recently and I don't remember the part where he restrained a tyrant. The word "Thunderbolt" should have made the clue easy so no complaint here. Nice win by Andy. I thought John could have won a few games.
I had a dream that I was asleep and then I woke up and Jeopardy! was on.
