Re: Tuesday, March 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The highlight of today's show:
Scores spoiled for that point of the DJ! round.
Katie had other moments of her own in the episode for slightly plugging her podcast, finishing a chat with a Taylor Swift song title and a snap in connecting the actresses for ROLE IN COMMON and clearly not quite believing the players don't know their Mexican diving places.
The game derailed in the DJ! round after being on shaky ground anyway. It seemed like it was either an easy clue and Brendan was in first or it was a stumper and crickets chirped.
The FJ! category had me precalling countries and I was proud of myself to use the break to come up with Albania, Australia, Afghanistan and Kazakhstan. Of any use? Not one bit.
The FJ! clue had me stumped and I knew I was stumped. Even in LL time it's still a miss. Millionaire with choice and all four cities having 3 A's? Maaaybe, though can't know. The right place rings a slight bell due to the previous J! clue appearances.
J! usage:
#7593, aired 2017-09-20 ART SUPPLIES $400: Pavonazzo & carrara are both popular types of this material for sculpting
#7270, aired 2016-04-01 ROCKS & MINERALS $400: The Carrara quarries in Tuscany are prized for this rock used by Michelangelo for his "Pieta"
#5652, aired 2009-03-17 ROCKS & MINERALS $1600: Carrara, Italy is famous for its quarries of this rock
#5374, aired 2008-01-10 AN ART "C" CATEGORY $2,000 (Daily Double): This north central Italian city has a biennial sculpture exhibit, which we presume features works in marble
#5020, aired 2006-06-09 CITY OF THE DAY: MINNEAPOLIS $1600: City Hall's Father of Waters statue was carved from the largest single block ever of the Carrara type of this
#4552, aired 2004-05-25 DUDE, WHERE'S MY "CAR"? $2000: Tuscan town typified by its famous marble
#4405, aired 2003-10-31 ROCKS & MINERALS $200: Michelangelo used this statuary rock from Carrara, Italy for many of his works
#3553, aired 2000-02-02 MICHELANGELO $200: Until the Pope demanded Pietrasanta, Michelangelo quarried this material from Carrara
#3020, aired 1997-10-17 ART SUPPLIES $400: Carrara is an Italian type of this material popular with sculptors
#2230, aired 1994-04-22 ROCKS & MINERALS $100: Much of this stone used by Michelangelo for his sculptures came from Carrara, Italy
#1299, aired 1990-04-05 ROCKS & MINERALS $200: This mineral used by Michelangelo for his sculptures was supplied by the Carrara quarry in Tuscany
The provenance is there though not enough to help.
I'm curious about the last time it showed up in Learned League or the NYT crossword if someone wants a research assignment.
0/3 by the players was zero surprise after the less than stellar combined Coryat and 0/3 on DDs to complete the skunk day on betting clues.
If Tom was going to have a game like that it's always better to do it on day 2 than debut day.
Brendan was 0/3 on big clues, but the Coryat was respectable on the way to being heard from (right or wrong) on more than half the clues.
********
Note to TJF: I've mentioned before that I copy your wording of the FJ! clue to save me from typing it and increasing the odds of an error. I also do a copy of my screen when the FJ! clue is revealed to use it for comparison.
You almost got me today with that extra letter A in the artist's name. You'll probably catch others on other sites that lift your work.

I'm your huckleberry.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 1:52 pm I'm curious about the last time it showed up in Learned League or the NYT crossword if someone wants a research assignment.
Carrara shows up 1 time in LearnedLeague, in a question, LL80 Match Day 20 Q5, March 20, 2019, with a much more important hint at the end of the question, so you'd probably gloss right over it:
https://learnedleague.com/match.php?80&20Parian, Pentelic, and Carrara (Luna) are different types of what specific artistic material? Famous works created in this material (and which include this material in their name) are named after Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin.
It's also appeared 1 time as an answer in a Will Shortz-era NYT crossword, Sunday July 4, 1999:
https://www.xwordinfo.com/Crossword?dat ... &g=103&d=AMichelangelo's marble source
There are also 12 known hits in pre-Shortz puzzles:
https://www.xwordinfo.com/Finder?word=CARRARA
It's appeared 4 time in clues, once in a Shortz crossword, once in an acrostic clue, and 2 times pre-Shortz. However, those 3 crossword clues were all some variant of the alliterative "Carrara cash" as a clue for LIRE.
All those A's, you'd think it would show up more in crosswords.
---
Also, of course I missed this one, spoiling my perfect score for Couric games. Ah well.

The closest this FJ comes to ringing any bell is that it sounds kind of like the last name of an actress named Tia.

Loved those Addams Family Snaps from Katie There. and the Acks.
I dont know Italian Cities well enough to come up with one that has 3 as in it.

Re: Tuesday, March 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Katie had some good ad-libs, like snapping her fingers on the Addams clue and "shake it off" after the Taylor Swift story.
Mammals for $600 was enormous negbait for "mole", although playing the category in order might have lessened that.
Moles threw me twice in that category, since I didn't know that shrews were moles either; I thought they were their own thing.
I'm curious to see how people did in that Song category. I usually hold my own, but I got only $1,200 this time
Triple "A" Geography was heavy on precalls. When was the last time FJ! spotted you a letter?
However, it didn't help me one bit, and it looks like this one's going to poll low.
Lach Trash: squirrel, Lake of the Woods, ermine, hardening of the arteries, bat

As proven above, I've seen Carrara before, but it certainly never stuck (and quite honestly if this were asked again in a year, I'll still miss it). I couldn't come up with any cities with 3 "A"s in it.
I got all but the $400.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 7:29 pm I'm curious to see how people did in that Song category. I usually hold my own, but I got only $1,200 this time

Also, you can see an earthrise from the moon's surface, but it would be a very long event and not like anything you'd experience from orbit.

No clue on FJ so put down Alabaster. (I used to live in Alabaster, Alabama). It fit the category and seemed plausible. Oh, well.
Katie was probably aghast that two players old enough to remember Wild World of Sports didn’t know where the cliff divers were from.
Nice job by Katie today. Her best effort so far.

Re: Tuesday, March 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
While the moon is tidally locked with the Earth, it does 'wiggle' a bit as it orbits, so if you're near the very edge of where you could see the Earth from the surface, you'd get about a 2-day 'earthrise'.
