He also "over-pronounced" Marie Antoinette...and Oktoberfest...I was sorry we didn't get to hear him say loco...Leander wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 7:02 amWhat you describe as “over the top” seems to apply to his pronunciation of Spanish origin words, which is a tendency of native speakers to pronounce words as they learned to pronounce them and not anglicize them.MattKnowles wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 11:58 pm
Luigi might be getting fatigued. He did very well during DJ but had some careless errors especially that final DD wager. He's putting an over-the-top accent on every word that has a foreign origin and it's pretty off-putting to me but he's fun to watch despite that. Innisfree was a good get.

Do you pronounce tortilla with an l sound in the second syllable? If not, then I’m not sure where you draw the line for “overpronunciation” unless it just means that it sounds funny to your ear.davey wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 9:30 amHe also "over-pronounced" Marie Antoinette...and Octoberfest...Leander wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 7:02 amWhat you describe as “over the top” seems to apply to his pronunciation of Spanish origin words, which is a tendency of native speakers to pronounce words as they learned to pronounce them and not anglicize them.MattKnowles wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 11:58 pm

Now that you mention it, Luigi pronounced the l's in flotilla. I guess that's where he draws the line...Woof wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 9:35 amDo you pronounce tortilla with an l sound in the second syllable? I'd say your first remark explains your second. Sports isn't going to lead many people to Carnegie-Mellon, then with that distraction you have to make the Scottish connection while trying to think of schools that start with Mc or Mac. And don't assume that people from Pittsburgh know C-M's team names, either... I don''t remember seeing them in the sports pages growing up...
Re: Thursday, September 15, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Yeah, I nearly went down that rabbit hole. Was thinking about MacAlester College before the penny dropped. Whether I’d have had time to scrawl down Carnegie-Mellon 20 sec into Think Time is another question.davey wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 9:54 amI'd say your first remark explains your second. I got this FJ, but I think I needed every bit of information in the clue. The fact that it started as a technical school was a huge help.
Re: Thursday, September 15, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Yeah, but it’s a pretty deep cut to know that CMU is the result of a merger of Carnegie Tech with Mellon Institute. For me, that history was just the confirmation of my guess after discarding MacAlester. It didn’t hurt that my son applied to CMU last year as a prospective CS major (he didn’t go there though)This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 11:55 am I got this FJ, but I think I needed every bit of information in the clue. I know that Carnegie Mellon is not a sports power--better known for computer tech and the arts (Holly Hunter, Ted Danson and others). But I think other Pittsburgh ( and Pittsburgh adjacent folks like me) got this.davey wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 9:54 amI'd say your first remark explains your second. Sure. I'm a little disappointed with myself that I didn't know those facts. I've been on the C-M campus and of course I know that it was once Carnegie Tech, and the Carnegie name is ubiquitous in the area. But I'll say that the school's profile is not closely identified with the origin of its founder. It's not like Notre Dame's connection to Irishness (even though its name is French!MrBluebird wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 12:21 pmI know that Carnegie Mellon is not a sports power--better known for computer tech and the arts (Holly Hunter, Ted Danson and others). School of Computer Science, 2008. Graduated before that big Gates Building got built.

I don't expect everyone in Pittsburgh to be aware of CM's Division III sports teams. But they are certainly aware it exists and they are probably drawn to think of it before considering others given the hints about its Scottish links.davey wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 9:54 amI'd say your first remark explains your second.
