Re: Thursday, February 23, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
All 3 from today's game were semifinalists in 2019. Justin winning makes it 3/4 moving on to the semis from the champ's spot.
Justin going all in on DD3 was a big move and he ended up close to a runaway. Unlike in yesterday's game, this time Justin closed the deal in solving the FJ! clue.
After my pen was down before the music began I spent think time wondering how easy or difficult this would be for the students. There are many ways through art classes, pop culture, and just paying attention to the world around you to be able to make the connection the clue wanted. These tourney players came through with the first tri-solve of the tourney. Good for them.
Mayim was noticeably less animated hosting today's show. Lunch break? Memo? Producer chat? Whatever it was, the over-giddy-ness about some of the material and game in general was toned down from the level that aired yesterday.

Final an instaget here because was just yesterday listening to the oral arguments in the pending SCOTUS case. Pooh-poohing the other side's arguments, one of the counsellors tells the Court that "Norman Lear would be turning over in his grave right now". #TooSoon

I wouldn’t have chanced it on the show, but Bear Bryant should also be accepted on the Nick Saban clue.
Wasn’t aware of the story but it sounded like something Warhol would do so it was a quick solve.

Yes, I was thinking that too. I think the way to pin it to the current coach would have been, "with his victory in the 2021-2022 season..."
A very easy final, which of course always favors whoever is in the lead.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

Clueing Grambling as "the Tigers of this state university of Louisiana" seemed amazingly dickish. (As it points to the much more prominent LSU) I know the Bayou Classic is Grambling vs Southern but even I was nearly tempted to say LSU as the Pavlov is so strong. They probably should have thrown HBCU in there somewhere.

The school’s name is actually Grambling State University. So I guess they were trying to get cutesy with the wording. I agree they should have mentioned it is a big HBCU game.jeff6286 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 2:36 pm Clueing Grambling as "the Tigers of this state university of Louisiana" seemed amazingly dickish. Yeah, LSU is true negbait there considering that all three words of its name appear in the clue.Bamaman wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 2:53 pmThe school’s name is actually Grambling State University. Re: Thursday, February 23, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Grambling is an interesting one also as for the vast majority of colleges, whether or not you add "State" is very important, but despite the school being Grambling State, "Grambling" should be accepted as it's very colloquially referred to as such, particularly in the Grambling vs Southern rivalry. Someone saying Grambling here without State would almost certainly earn a long pause from Mayim, hopefully followed by a thumbs up from the judges. In multiple past games in the Archive, including this game, Super Bowl Halftime Shows $1000, Grambling without State is listed as being accepted or in fact given by Alex. https://j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=5782
And wow they did the same thing as last night way back in 2007, COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES $800, a second row clue: "One of the most popular organizations at this state univ. in Louisiana is the Tiger Marching Band, founded 1926"
LSU was negged, as its Tiger Marching Band was founded in 1893. That is unbelievable to me that not only did someone write that clue but it made it all the way to the show without the glaring LSU negbait in some way ruled out.

The school was known as Grambling College until 1974 when it got its current name. But the football helmets just have a G on the side (similar in design to the Green Bay Packers) and the jerseys have “GRAMBLING” above the number. I rarely hear it called by its full name.
