Holy freaking wow. James snatches Victory from the jaws of defeat, all because Mattea didn't know the Final Jeopardy answer. So after the first episode of the semi-finals, James is already an automatic finalist.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

Learned on the recent Bird Brain of Britain special that the Golden Hind was originally called the Pelican.

The tallest mountain on Vancouver Island is called the Golden Hinde, named after the ship. #CanCon #SorryMattea

James 6
Andrew 1
Mattea 1
Matt 0

James has already clinched his spot in the finals. It will be interesting to see how he plays against Matt/Mattea tomorrow.

I might have bet zero in Mattea’s spot in the second game.

Ken Jenny from the Block.

James found 3/6 DDs and without room to mess around was correct on both FJ! clues.

I would think James and Andrew liked their draw to play games back-to-back instead of having an early bye like Mattea and Matt?

Right author, wrong work for me on the FJ! clue.
************
Ken was ready with James signing his name in Japanese to call on "Holzhauer-San" and it was great to see James laugh away his composure a bit.

Andrew just had to be first in to neg on the EGOT winner pic when it would have been better if James had got in first with the right name. Points wise at least the $200 lost and $200 rebounded was not a big sum

The FJ! clue was revealed and halfway through think time I was stumped in trying things hart, stag, doe, fawn, Magellan ship[?], Half Moon, and then my phone rang.

Knowing I was taking a miss on the clue I paused my recording and spent a couple of minutes on the line with a friend. All during the call I kept thinking about the FJ! clue and still could not figure it out.

Tough for Mattea on a two-point swing and I appreciate that they went for the win and did not win the game with a zero to small anticipating what James would likely wager.

James vs. Mattea vs. Matt tomorrow. Are there four points available or will James leave just one point for one or the other?

Looking at DDs they have been in these rows:
4,4,4 & 5,2,3
5,3,5 & 4,2,4
3,4,2 & 4,5,3
3,5,2 & 5,4,4
4,5,5 & 4,3,5
4,3,3 & 4,3,5
4,2,2 & 5,5,4
4,3,3 & 4,4,4

2nd box: 6
3rd box: 11
4th box: 19
5th box: 12

I knew the Golden Hind was called the Pelican also, but not sure how I would’ve gotten that out of that clue.

What was very frustrating was I just learned about Mary Anning on Sunday, and both about the Ichthyosaur and Plesiosaur. So, my first guess was Plesiosaur, but when Ken said Marine, I switched to Ichthyosaur and my first answer was correct.

Somehow, I’m able to correctly get double digits right in each game in what is a very difficult set of clues.

Wagering error by James here; had he and Mattea both missed he would have thrown away the win. He guarded only against Andrew doubling up and not against the 15,999 Mattea would (and did) land at by covering him and missing FJ. I can't blame Mattea for covering James, but the only other time he was in a close second with third locked out, he also maintained the lock.

Yeah I was kind of shocked at James's wager, it neither left him winning on a triple stumper with standard betting nor passed Mattea if they were to bet $0 or some other small number to counter a possible James small wager. Here's what I wrote before the FJ clue:

James can win on a triple stumper by betting less than $2800. Interestingly if Mattea foresees that play from James, they can counter it and just bet $0 and guarantee the win. But James could then counter the counter and bet big and win on a get. Game theory!

I'd have thought James knows all the math and the scenarios and might be a player to consider the 2nd and 3rd level options. However, simply sticking with the first option guarantees him at least the 2nd place point, so in this format it might be wiser to just go with that and not risk getting 0 points by going big with the 3rd level wager. But I still can't see any reasonable argument for the $5900 wager rather than $2800.

While the FJ betting was quite interesting, even more fascinating was Mattea simply dominating the buzzer in the DJ round, possibly the first time EVER someone has outbuzzed James like that for an extended period. Checking the boxscore, buzzing in DJ: James 7/21, Andrew 7/20, Mattea 12/16, unreal. The first round was James 62% Mattea 32% so just a total reversal, crazy.

I'd have thought he would, too, but to be fair James hasn't really needed to think much about FJ wagering theory during the lion's share of his games...

this episode went fine. interview interview in the first game , I wish Ken summarised a little bit about Lucan's Game interview from the Reunion tournaments instead of assuming we remember it. The 'answers in front of me' reference was amazing coming from the host. I think we can all relate to he talking about people seeing us at our worst in test situations.

Ken's son not allowing both of them on fantasy baseball league was probably a good decision considering that would make the fantasy baseball league turn into well this series, (basically they takeover and fantasy baseball becomes a 'side note') I have not figured out based on this if the kid chose James because his strategy skills (for choosing players) or something else. this was a weird thing to get into for the show. The only reason I went into it is here is that I feel it mention in my own personal experience it sometimes can gets weird when parents and kids play long-term strategy games. also this is a theme considering Ken mentions some pub trivia with his kid situation in a contestant interview with his kid and some sort of learn to lose situation that went wrong mentioned on the regular show. I love my family but my own dad plays this game that I (and to a extent mom) used to play with him and sometimes they basically took over the game or made rule on what can and cannot be be done if they got involved, I eventually played minimally because it just got ridiculous. just food for thought. The film category was interesting in a good way.

what composure.

in terms of the beginning of the second game. I enjoyed the pushing the envelope comment. granted in terms of the podium I can understand why they allow that in the situation considering it can be viewed as a 'cultural thing'. (but I would have imagine they would have had him (or someone else) transliterate it underneath it, that will will be interesting when I get up to that section of the podcast if they talk about how they verified that.) I did like gems category i used to look at the mineral book in the school library when I had a chance went as a kid so it brought back that.

it had to be split because it was not showing. I spent the last half hour cutting The previous post down not really accomplishing much for getting a headache and removing one or two sentences.

we all hate DVR issues. out of curiosity did it not record completely (maybe because of a pre-empt) or is it just not watchable. I have situations personally in which The Recording basically just skipped around all over the place (like I will be watching a show from the beginning and it will end up in the 40 minute mark) so I understand how annoying it is when that happens.

In this particular case there would be a blip that would skip like 6 seconds, followed a few minutes later by a blip that would rewind 6 seconds (thus showing a clue twice), with this pattern repeated maybe four times in an hour.
