THE FIRST PRESIDENT TO . . .

2: Appear on television, at the opening of the New York World's Fair in 1939.

4: Serve as governor of what is now a foreign country; he was also the only former President to serve on the Supreme Court.

6: Pardon a former President; he also posthumously pardoned Robert E. Lee.

8: Not run for re-election after his first term; his successor didn't run for re-election either.

10: Become President without ever having been a British subject; he is also the only President not related to King John of England.

POTENT POET-ABLES

3: In The Devil's Dictionary, he defined brandy as “one part thunder-and-lightning, one part remorse, two parts bloody murder, one part death-hell-and-the-grave and four parts clarified Satan.”

6: His “Reflection on Ice Breaking” was that “Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker.”

9: This author of the Rubiyat longed for “a book of verses underneath the bough, a jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou.”

12: In Deformed Transformed, this Romantic-era nobleman born with a deformed foot wrote, “What's drinking? A mere pause from thinking.”

15: This Roman lyric poet who lived in the first century BC wrote in one of his “Satires” that “No poems can please for long or live that are written by water-drinkers.”

Going for FORD here, but see the Instant Replay for why.

8: Not run for re-election after his first term; his successor didn't run for re-election either.

Again, going for TYLER, but POLK is also getting points, and WH HARRISON maybe? Clearly should have said "not appear on the ballot" or some such.

10: Become President without ever having been a British subject; he is also the only President not related to King John of England.

VAN BUREN
