Re: Friday, November 10, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I can chalk it up to trying to say the z sound and the y sound too fast together. Alan's seeming "Captain Avab" is a little harder to explain away.

This signature of Jeanne D'Arc looks oddly close to what Alan wrote, other than the h which one presumes was always silent...

e ≠ a though. Yeah, it may be 'Berry / Barry' territory, but I'm not quite ready to accept 'Anna' as an alternative for 'Anne'
And the file name says it's "Jehanne" as well
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Alan made a blog post reconstructing his FJ fumble to the best of his ability. The short version is that he was already frazzled from the close-fought gameplay, burned himself out brainstorming after the FJ category reveal, and overthought the clue.

In French a final e is often articulated like a final a.
There are several problems with it, but the best reason for not accepting it is he says he was intending someone else.
I understand why annulment in the clue threw him off.

Interesting post, and it answers the question I had, which was, if he wasn't trying to show off with an obscure spelling of "Joan", who was he thinking of?: Queen Joanna (1497-1555), daughter of Queen Isabella of Castile.seaborgium wrote: ↑Sat Nov 11, 2023 11:50 pm Alan made a blog post reconstructing his FJ fumble to the best of his ability. Always? I'm talking about a different sound entirely. Have you ever heard the French song Frère Jacques? It doesn't scan unless you pronounce the final e sounds. Then there are words like règle and livre. We could disagree over whether the final e in Anne is silent, but it's moot for this response anyway.
