The litter/litter box distinction seemed a bit ticky-tack, especially after the leniency on Rolls and Royce.
Though Ken had started his ruling, Stuart said Royce right before Ken said no, so within the rules. The litter category referred to these, making boxes part of the needed response.

I hate when they throw a softball FJ like that when it's still anyone's game going in. I'm sure Emily was thinking "oh well."

I can see the first time, or maybe even switching categories, but when you stay in the column, let it go!
This. Very much this. TPTB need to get rid of this directive pronto. Plus what can they do if the contestants just ignore the request?
Don't they "advise" players not to bounce? and folks don't listen to that....
I can't say I've even noticed the category calling, though. As long as they get thru all the clues, I don't care.
With bouncing I think it's more like "you can select the clues in any order you like, but just keep in mind some categories are made to be played top to bottom." So it certainly isn't any kind of dictate--more like a suggestion. With the category names I have a feeling it's very much "PLEASE state the full category name every time" nowadays.

those were some funny stories. definitely giving "Covid donuts" and wagering negative numbers. (how I do not remember this negative numbers event I do not know)

The dog and catcategory was very educational. The litter box idea was definitely something that I am curious about.(I mean this positively) I cannot believe this is the second 1980s TV reference this week this time about the category in round 1 auto man empire. (now that was a tv reference I never thought I would be writing.)

I am actually a fan and always has been a fan since being a kid of the attack from the bottom strategy (even in games that do not do the 'storytelling thing' like smarter than a fifth grader it seems to help) but would it be the easy solution to write the categories from bottom to top. for final I thought it was some sort of housing , painting (as in the wall paint) or glass business since I know a lot of of those brands name their colours ice blue or something like that. mentioning the wood bottle would help. In terms of reading the whole category I think the most important thing if they going to do this continuously would be make sure the category names do not go to whole sentences again. (you know the ones)

Why they would suddenly start requiring or requesting the full category after decades (as far as I remember) of being fine with shorthand is beyond me. All I know is I find it annoying. Is it possible a contestant made a stink about being somehow "misled" or "thrown off my game" by an opponent using shorthand, and TPTB overreacted?

The show specifically said on Inside Jeopardy that it was a compromise position they were trying out so that the home viewer would better know the category.

No contestant made a stink. Fans made a stink about not knowing the category and this is what they're trying for the time being, because they don't have a way to format the category onto the clue screen well at this point.

(And, I'm not sure I want the category on the clue screen—it would cause major headaches to J! Archive's workload if that was to happen.)

I expect opinions are different when you're talking about "most important words of the category" vs the practice of "same category for $800". I have a lot of difficulty imagining that anybody objected to the latter.

A litter box need not be filled with litter. You can use shredded newspapers, wood, soil, etc.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

I can imagine someone feeling thrown off by "same category" and giving a response that doesn't fit the category because they forgot what it was. Personally, I'd feel like a dope if I blamed that miss on anyone other than myself. But other people's level of entitlement may vary.
