Because I'm a completionist, the fake Nobel goes to, surprising no one, another American.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-67045408
This year's Nobel economics prize has been awarded to Claudia Goldin, an American economic historian, for her work on women's employment and pay.
...
She had "advanced our understanding of women's labour market outcomes", the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said, pointing to her work examining 200 years of data on the US workforce, showing how and why gender differences in earnings and employment rates changed over time.

At the IOC session in Mumbai, five sports that had been proposed by the organizing committee of the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics have been accepted to be added to the program:

* Baseball / Softball
* Cricket
* Lacrosse
* Flag football
* Squash

Baseball and softball have had an off-and-on history at the Olympics (last played at the 2020 Tokyo games after being absent since 2008, and not set to be played in Paris next year). Cricket was played at the 1900 Paris games but not since. Lacrosse was played at the 1904 and 1908 games (in St. Louis and London) but not since. Flag football and Squash will be completely new sports to an Olympic program.

Billboard has released a list of Top 500 Pop Songs: https://www.billboard.com/lists/best-po ... -macarena/

Such things are always subjective, ridiculous and just for fun, but obviously the ones in between are going to be off the mark if "Macarena" is #500 and this is the Top 10.

1. Whitney Houston, "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" -- "Not only understands and exemplifies" pop music's favorite topics -- love, sex, dancing and music -- but "also features the greatest possible singer to deliver it."

2. ABBA, "Dancing Queen" -- "a soaring Swedish anthem that encapsulates the freedom, liberation and possibility of the dancefloor."

3. The Temptations, "My Girl" -- An "exceptionally graceful ballad," "immediately recognizable," "classy, but not the least bit stodgy or old-fashioned."

4. Backstreet Boys, "I Want It That Way" -- "It's all silly, it's all epic, and it's all so of its time that the whole thing has become strangely timeless, understood by few but beloved by all."

5. Kelly Clarkson, "Since U Been Gone" -- "The 21st century's greatest contribution to the pop canon so far."

6. Madonna, "Like a Prayer" -- "The Queen of Pop's crown jewel."

7. Michael Jackson, "Billie Jean" -- "A significant cultural touchstone."

8. Carly Rae Jepsen, "Call Me Maybe" -- "pure bubblegum pop goodness."

9. 2Pac feat. Dr. Dre, "California Love" -- A "hook-filled hip hop party-starter."

10. The Beatles, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” -- “A force the likes of which pop had never encountered before, forever changing music, culture and hairstyles on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Released last week, "Hackney Diamonds" is the new album from the Rolling Stones.

Also, the new number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 is Taylor Swift's "Cruel Summer", which spent much of the summer out of the top spot by a bunch of country songs. Cruel, indeed. (The song originally appeared on Swift's 2019 album "Lover".)

Stephen Sondheim's last musical, Here We Are, debuted off-Broadway at The Shed on October 22. From Wikipedia:
Here We Are is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by David Ives. It is based on two films by Luis Buñuel: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel.

I'd guess it's more likely that "Merrily We Roll Along," winning new acclaim on Broadway in a production starring Daniel Radcliffe and Jonathan Groff, will show up on J! before "Here We Are" does. I saw HWA last week, it doesn't seem like a finished work. And unfortunately he won't be able to tinker with it, as he did for many of his shows. An outside chance The Shed comes up, or the shopping-mall-for-the-one-percent where it's located, Hudson Yards. They'd probably avoid the suicide-inducing "sculpture" there called The Vessel.

The Texas Rangers win the World Series with an amazing streak of 11 consecutive road wins in the same postseason. It gives Bruce Bochy a 4th win as manager in his career.

Bit early before it becomes J! material, but any time is fair for LL.

Normally a British cabinet reshuffle wouldn't merit mention here, but I think this one does on account of who's involved: Former Prime Minister David Cameron was appointed UK Foreign Secretary by current PM Rishi Sunak. Cameron returns to politics after seven (not entirely incident free) years away, following the Leave win in the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Cameron was made a life peer to facilitate the appointment; he's the first former Prime Minister to receive a peerage since Margaret Thatcher in 1992.

Bruce Bochy joins Sparky Anderson and Tony LaRussa as the only managers to win World Series titles with teams from both leagues. Bochy won a title with the Giants and Rangers. Anderson won it with the Tigers and the Reds. LaRussa won it with the A’s and Cardinals.

I can't imagine this being specifically asked about but...it's pretty cool

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-67466202
A rare bottle of whisky has been sold for $2.7m (£2.1m) - breaking the record for the most expensive wine or spirit sold at auction.

The Macallan [Adami] 1926 single malt is one of the world's most sought-after bottles of Scotch whisky.
That said...
The auction house's head of whisky said he had been allowed to taste "a tiny drop" of it beforehand.

"It's very rich, it's got a lot of dried fruit as you would expect, a lot of spice, a lot of wood," Jonny Fowle told the AFP news agency.
Such a routine whisky description, Charissa Thompson could've said that.

That link hasn't updated with Cameron's new title, so here it is!

Arriving as David William Donald Cameron, he was sworn in as the peer Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton.

The IOC Executive Committee has named the French Alps and Salt Lake City as the "preferred hosts" for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympics; their choice is expected to be ratified at the full IOC meeting in July.

Upon ratification, that would mean the list of upcoming hosts is:
2024: Paris (S)
2026: Milano / Cortina (Italy) (W)
2028: Los Angeles (S)
2030: French Alps (W)
2032: Brisbane (S)
2034: Salt Lake City (W)
