One thing's for sure: I would happily pay to see a Mickey Mouse horror movie now that his Steamboat Willie design is public domain (just that; Disney still owns all the later Mickeys, and you can't use Mickey as a trademark). Already it's been uploaded to both YouTube and Wikipedia, in HD (Disney's own upload was made years ago and thus had a lower resolution).

Tigger went public domain too, by way of his debut story. They already put him in the Blood and Honey sequel that comes out February.

I watched Steamboat Willie for the first time in my life earlier today. Some of the things Mickey did to the animals might be considered horrific by current standards.

After watching the overtime of the Rose Bowl, it became the second most horrific thing I watched today.

Even Walt Disney admitted that he went too far with Mickey using the sow and piglets as musical instruments: he vowed that he would never treat animals that cruelly in future cartoons.

(The other two were Frenchman Didier Deschamps in 1998 and 2018, and Brazilian Mario Zagallo in 1958/62 and 1970.) In the famous Monty Python "Philosopher's Football Match" sketch, Beckenbauer was the only actual football player on either team ("Beckenbauer, obviously a bit of a surprise there", says the announcer when reading the lineups).

This is how to write an RIP post. Facts, Archive hits, trivia hooks. It's all there.

I'm just as guilty of the 1-liner as anybody, so let's aspire in 2024 to create more obit posts like this one, even if someone's already beat you to the first post.

The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

So it's the kind of thing Oppenheimer would win this year and not whoever would've got credit for the sole decision to put Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men.

Golf wrote: Thu Feb 15, 2024 10:25 pmAs an aside, Pistol Pete set the record in three years and less than 90 games as freshman were not allowed to play at that time. Also with no 3-point line, it was estimated his 44.2 college scoring average would have been 60 or more in the 3-point era. With college players competing in as many as 140 games nowadays his totals would have been beyond scary.
And just to top it off, he did all this without a left coronary artery. His right coronary artery had enlarged to compensate. The problem was not discovered until the autopsy following his death at age 40.
Didn't compensate enough. Killed him.

Or possibly it compensated too much. If Pete had settled for weekend golfer or even second string b-ball player, he might have been fine. Basketball legend took things way outside the tolerances specified in the manual. I mean, not that he knew. The doctors never caught it and his last words, less than a minute before dying, were "I feel great!"

Don't need it. My left coronary artery has already been seen (as well as by me), so I know it's there.
