Game Recap for Show #6461, 2012-10-22

CONTESTANTS
Betsy Chisolm, a volunteer storyteller from Greeley, Colorado
Tim Callo, a manufacturing engineer from Sugarland, Texas
Glenn Fleishman, a technology journalist from Seattle, Washington (whose 2-day cash winnings total $28,398)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. And thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Our returning champion, as you just heard, is a technology specialist who's won over $28,000 on our program. So, that is enough money to buy some of that new technology stuff that's out there that I don't understand. Tim and Betsy are the newcomers. Welcome aboard. I bet you're into technology, too. Let's see how it works for you in this first round of Jeopardy! These are the categories that await you...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
STATE SYMBOLS OF HAWAII (3/3)
FORMAL MOVIE TITLES (5/5)

IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)

IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY $1000: This nearby galaxy aka M31 contains remnants of smaller galaxies "eaten" by the giant central one

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Betsy: $1,400
Glenn: $800
Tim: $200

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: One of the premier art galleries in the countryis the one in Chicago, and Betsy Chisolm, uh, visited the Art Institute of Chicago under special circumstances.

Betsy: Yes, it was my first trip to Chicago, and I thought it was normal Chicago weather. It was 25 below zero. I got on the bus and went downtown and went to the art institute and was the only person there for a whole day. It was like being a queen with my own private art collection. It was fabulous.

Alex: Chicagoans know how to deal with cold weather.

Betsy: I moved there anyway.

Alex: Oh, okay.

Alex: Tim Callo from Sugar Land, Texas, a manufacturing engineer with a collection of...

Tim: Hot Wheels.

Alex: Hot Wheels. Those little toy things, right?

Tim: Yes.

Alex: How many have you got in your collection?

Tim: I would say over 5,000.

Alex: Holy smokes! When did you start collecting?

Tim: Uh...

Alex: In the womb?

[Laughter]

Tim: 1998, when I was like 12.

Alex: Wow.

Tim: And what is it about that collection, about Hot Wheels, that really excites you?

Alex: I just liked playing with cars when I was very small, and then I saw a newspaper article like in a newspaper that showed people collecting them--

Alex: Mm-hm.

Tim: --and then that got me to do it.

Alex: That's neat.

Alex: Glenn Fleishman is our champion. He is a two-time winner on Jeopardy!, of course. He won on Friday and on Thursday. But this is not his first time winning on a game or quiz show. How old were you when you had your first victory?

Glenn: I believe I was 10.

Alex: And what kind of show was it?

Glenn: Well, if you remember Pat McCormick--

Alex: Yes!

Glenn: --from the old San Francisco Bay Area, Oakland TV, he had a show called Dialing for Dollars, but he also did TV Pow!, where they called you up--if you were a kid, they called you up, and you said "Pow!" into a telephone, and it shot something on-screen where he was.

[Apparent edit]

Alex: Oh, that's wonderful. Well, good luck today.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
HERE'S 2 "U"! $600: The name of this reddish-brown color actually comes from the Latin word for "white"
(Tim: What is burgundy?)

HERE'S 2 "U"! $1000: It's a riddle involving a play on words, like "What's black & white & read all over?"
(Betsy: What is a pun?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Tim: $4,400
Betsy: $3,800
Glenn: $1,400

DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
BREAKING NEWS (3/5)
LINE FROM THE TV SHOW (5/5) (Alex: Next, we'll give you a [*], you identify the show for me.)
19th CENTURY FEMALE AUTHORS (3/5, including 1 missed Daily Double)
CRIME (3/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
4-LETTER FILL IN THE PROVERB (0/0)
THEY DRIVE ON THE LEFT IN... (3/3)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS

Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $8,800

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Glenn snagged the next Daily Double on the 20th clue. Glenn had $5,000, Tim had $4,000, and Betsy was at $8,600. Glenn made it a True Daily Double, wagering $5,000.

19th CENTURY FEMALE AUTHORS $1600: Amantine-Lucille-Aurore Dupin was the real name of this "manly" authoress whose love life scandalized Paris
(Glenn: Who is George Sands?)
...
(Alex: Less than a minute to go now, Glenn.)

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Glenn who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 23rd clue. Glenn had no money, Tim had $4,000, and Betsy was at $6,600. Glenn wagered $2,000.

CRIME $1600: In 2011 a renegade group was accused of doing this to fellow Amish, a heinous crime in that culture
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]
[Betsy's score inexplicably went up to $8,600 after this clue; this was corrected before Final Jeopardy!]

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
BREAKING NEWS $1600: (I'm Chuck Todd of NBC News.) In 2006 I broke the story that this man, the ex-governor of Virginia, had decided not to run for president in 2008--he went for the U.S. Senate instead & won

BREAKING NEWS $2000: (I'm New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman.) In 2002 I broke the story of a peach plan--a return to June 1967 lines & a Palestinian state for a full peace between Israel & the Arab world--proposed by this now-king of Saudi Arabia
(Betsy: Who is Hussein?)
(Tim: Who is King Fahd?)
...
(Alex: And our thanks and appreciation to all those celebrities. You may remember that they were all competitors on our Power Players Week in Washington, D.C.)

CRIME $1200: In Texas you may not possess this "quick" 3-letter type of homemade gun
(Glenn: What is a quick-action rifle?)

19th CENTURY FEMALE AUTHORS $2000: The youngest of the sisters, Anne Bronte penned "The Tenant of" this residence in 1848 but died from TB a year later
(Betsy: What is Wildfeld Hall?)

CRIME $2000: Richard III was killed at Bosworth Field shouting, this crime! This crime!

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Betsy: $6,600
Tim: $4,000
Glenn: $2,000

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
KINGS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Betsy: Wager $1,401 to cover Tim, but no more than $2,599 so as not to fall behind Glenn's doubled score.
Tim: You have the hope of surpassing Betsy if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $2,601 to force Betsy to wager to win while also protecting your position from being usurped by Glenn.
Glenn: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
The last British monarch to be buried outside the U.K., he was interred in 1727 in the land where he was born

FINAL SCORES
Glenn: $2,000 + $0 = $2,000 (Who was King George I?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Tim: $4,000 - $4,000 = $0 (Who is William of Orange?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Betsy: $6,600 - $1,401 = $5,199 (Who was George II?) (New champion: $5,199)
(Alex: [To Glenn] The House of Hanover.)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $10,400

This episode may not be seen in many markets because of the presidential debate. My Seattle station will apparently air Jeopardy at 10.30 p.m.

Since I knew George III was King during 1776, I just went backwards to come up with the right answer in FJ. Not exactly a WAG, but close.

Did anyone else say "acolytes" for "altar boys?" Judges?

On the Virginia Governor, I said "Jim Calhoun." I was obviously thinking of Jim Cahill, whom I once interviewed over the phone, but obviously, even he wasn't the correct answer.

Do my eyes deceive me, or did it seem like Betsy's score said 8600 before the break, and then was corrected to 6600 before FJ was revealed?

Strange game. They mention the Andromeda Galaxy in a clue and then it pops up in the very next clue in the Daily Double. Then they have a category about People of Faith and later a clue about the Amish. Then Richard III drops in and then FJ is Kings. I wonder if Alex hadn't babbled on about Glenn and Betsy adding a letter they would have had time for one more clue, giving Glenn a chance to get back into the game.

It was a tradition on the old baord that boardies who made the show would change their avatar to something related to what did them in on the show. Will Glenn change his to the letter S? tough break on that DD, but congrats on being a two time champ.

The 1700s meant it had to be one of the Georges. The first one was German and i knew George III took over in 1760, so 1727 seemed like around the right time for George I to check out.

i checked the tape and it did say she had $8,600.

Thanks! Yes, I'll put a scarlet S on my avatar!

I didn't get an answer on this, but I think there was a calculation error. At the end of the Double Jeopardy round, I looked up at the contestant board that we can see, and it said $8,600. A moment later, it changed to $6,600. I think they double added something earlier in the game, since it wasn't discussed otherwise. I couldn't get the contestant coordinators to explain other than to say that the current amount was correct, and I didn't push it, as I figured there must be something going on that I didn't need to know about.

So that's what color auburn is. I never saw it in the Crayola box. (I always found it odd that of all the brands, Kmart's store brand {which were actually repackaged Sargent} had so many colors that no one else did: crimson, chartreuse, gamboge, emerald, sapphire, etc.)

I've only been to a Catholic service a few times, so I've never heard the term "altar boy". Then again, I've already made it very well known that I despise the overdone amounts of formality and reverence in Catholic masses. (Do you really need to kiss the Bible?)

I finally get a Maya/Inca/Aztec clue right thanks to, of all things, my Sonic the Hedgehog knowledge. (One of the games has an echidna named Tikal.)

The Hulk has a TV show? Since when?

Yay for another game where we don't even reveal an entire category. The video clues actually seemed pretty speedy today, so I was surprised. (Then again, Alex taking three minutes to explain the flub on that Hall clue didn't help.)

Blah blah blah, another king's name that will never stick in my mind. HOW do you keep all these damn kings straight?!? I've tried and tried and TRIED but can't remember a single one, their reign, or ANYthing related to any king.

We were all being a little sluggy that day and using too many words to select clues. When you have a lot of clues in which no one rings in, it takes a lot more time, too. The contestant coordinators asked us during one of the breaks to stop saying "please" and "can I" and "Alex" to speed things up! It just was a bad habit we all managed to use that round.
Blah blah blah, another king's name that will never stick in my mind. HOW do you keep all these damn kings straight?!? I've tried and tried and TRIED but can't remember a single one, their reign, or ANYthing related to any king.
Now you know why I bet $0. Kings are my worst category, and I figured I might be able to eke a #2 finish by betting $0, because I would certainly not get the right question to any clue. Color me surprised when I immediately knew the right answer! D'oh! I was hoping the #1 finisher might get cocky and mis-wager, betting enough to let me win with $2,000 and a right answer, but she was smart, and I couldn't have won even if I'd bet the full $2,000 I had left. I was playing really to win $2,000 instead of $1,000 as second place at that point.

Thanks! I don't feel that bad about it. I said I'd write more about why...

This was the first game taped on a Wednesday after I'd spent the whole day there on Tuesday, and had won games 4 and 5 with a lot of effort. I'd gone back to the hotel on Tuesday night absolutely spent. Lay around insensate for a while. Went out to dinner with friends and imbibed no alcohol. That night, didn't sleep well; had a mild cold that was worse in the morning.

I got to the studio Wednesday morning and started to play in rehearsal and realized I was way way off. Couldn't get buzzer timing. Brain wasn't firing. There's some amount of adrenaline I had in me, and some amount of brain chemistry that lets you pull long-term memory in quickly that can be depleted. So I tried very hard not to psych myself out, but I could feel the physical part of it.

I mean, I know what a hibiscus is, and my mouth said "orchid" when my brain said "hibiscus"!

When we got the George Sand clue, I really didn't know the answer. Some recess of my head said "George Saunders" which I knew was wrong and some other part said "maybe Sands?" So I gave an answer that I figured was wrong, and it was, but it sounded so close, it probably killed viewers because they thought I misspoke. Instead, I was really guessing wildly and happened to come up with something very close.

The next day. I know several folks who have done multi-show runs now that did a run in the afternoon one day, had a week or two between them, and then came back and had the confidence of starting fresh and were rested up. Stephanie did five in a row (go, Dr. J!) on a Wednesday one week, then came back and killed off two sets of competitors that morning before hitting that horrible FJ in her eighth game.

If I remember right, Tom Nissley won all his shows on taping day, came back a week or two later, and did another run that same day.

It's a physical toll, and at 44, I think I've got a finite amount of mental energy and acuity available to me! I'm completely pleased in every way to have scrabbled my way through two wins.
