Re: Friday, October 26, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
I precalled FJ, but they all missed it.
Re: Friday, October 26, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
I'm fluent in Spanish, so I was disappointed to go only 4/5 there. (I missed bailiff because I have no idea what one does.) Puffball was my only miss in Ball.
0/5 on Beauty Queen and Shakespeare. I was completely lost all around.
Monterey Bay Aquarium seemed way, way too localized for $200 IMO.
Anyone else notice that the Borgnine category had both a Mermaid Man and a Merman? (By the by, have I made it clear yet that I hate SpongeBob?)
What was the TOM for Barcelona on Gift Shop for $800?
Angry Birds was actually one of my precalls (Where's My Water? was the other), and I'm outright shocked that this was a TS.

I have never played Angry Birds. My WAG for FJ was Farmville.

Re: Friday, October 26, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
I thought that this was a very sloppily written board, with a lot of overvalued and undervalued clues. In general I have felt that way about the boards this week.
I was disappointed that Tori, the Art Historian, missed the "Cana" clue from the Veronese connection in the J! round.
FJ was an instant get for me, but only because of the 2011 World Quizzing Championships. If it wasn't for that I probably would have been clueless. I think that it was a bad idea for a FJ clue and I am glad that it didn't decide this game.

No clue on FJ, didn't even have a guess.
Sorry to see the grocery merchandiser not win, but did like her late game DD bet. It gets her back in the game with a chance to win in FJ if she gets it right and still preserves her shot at second if she is wrong.

Re: Friday, October 26, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
I actually got a bit lucky on Final, as when I first saw "swine flu", I was actually thinking of the bird flu epidemic, and immediately Angry Birds came to mind, and I figured it was a lock. Then I thought, "Wait a minute, that says swine flu, not bird flu. What in the heck do pigs have to do with Angry Birds?" I've never played the game, never even watched anyone else play it, and apparently know nothing about it, as I had no idea there were pigs in it. Fortunately, I couldn't think of any other possible answer, as the only game I could think of with anything swine-related was World of Warcraft, which I've also never played, but I learned from South Park that you can go around the forest killing boars. I didn't really think that categorizing those boars as the "villains" of the game seemed logical, and I wasn't even sure if WOW came out in this century, (2001, in fact) so I just left Angry Birds on my paper and hoped for the best.
While this wasn't the best game, I give it a thumbs up merely for the fact that they managed to clear the board in DJ, which has been a pretty rare occurrence thus far this season. Also, yay for Meredith at least betting enough on the final DD to have a chance to win, though her wager still wasn't ideal. Had she gone all-in, or nearly so, and still given the correct response, she would have likely finished with more than 2/3rds of Keith's score, and could have wound up the winner on the triple stumper FJ if she made the right wager.
Has anyone ever given a quieter correct response than Keith's "Who is Baryshnikov?" I don't know what his problem was. Could he not decide from among all of the other dancers he knew named Mikhail? That entire category seemed incredibly easy: Gorbachev, Baryshnikov, AK-47 (alphanumeric assault rifle), Romanov Dynasty, and what could a Russian have been world champion of in the 1950s? Hmmm...tough one...tiddlywinks?

Add me to the instaget-and-shocked-it-was-a-TS group. I'm surprised that none of you who didn't know FJ! didn't see the news about the Angry Birds sequel that just came out, Bag Piggies. Wouldn't have helped the contestants, since I don't think it was out for them, but it's been out for a month or two.

Had NFI. Never played it. All I know about is is there's a game called Angry Birds.jeff6286 wrote:The villains in this game were inspired by the swine flu epidemic scare.
Guessed "The Walking Dead" for lack of anything else.
Pretty sure that puts me 2/5 this week.
I don't think I missed more than a dozen in the rest of the game though. Ran (or 4/5thd) at least half the categories.

Fortunately for me, I could not in thirty seconds come up with one other game.Paucle wrote:Had NFI. Never played it. All I know about is is there's a game called Angry Birds.
And knowing that I know nothing about games, I stayed with Angry Birds just to keep from saying nothing.

Ha-haaaa!!! (sprooiiingggg)

And even from the remove of 2,000 miles and two months, I could feel just how intensely Alex wanted Tori to win after interviewing her.
TPH, you can come out with some of the most obtuse and some of the sharpest comments on this board. Touché on that one.TenPoundHammer wrote:Anyone else notice that the Borgnine category had both a Mermaid Man and a Merman?

Just one more demonstration of the principle that you should try with all your might to respond to DD and FJ! clues that stump you, no matter how off-the-wall you think your guess might be.jeff6286 wrote:Has anyone ever given a quieter correct response than Keith's "Who is Baryshnikov?"

Only 3 other hits in the Archive for Gaudí. Seems several hundred miles from Pavlovian if you ask me.Budphrey wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antoni_Gaud%C3%AD

She was certainly easy to root for. I felt bad that she didn't do so well.Budphrey wrote:And even from the remove of 2,000 miles and two months, I could feel just how intensely Alex wanted Tori to win after interviewing her.
Loved her story, by the way. In college I had a friend with a prosthetic leg. We had a lot of fun with people who didn't know that.
