OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. He's good, he's fast, and he blew away his two opponents on yesterday's program. I'm referring, of course, to our champion, Joshua, who won $20,006. Zora and Waymond, good luck today. You're gonna need some measure of that. I know you're bright. Otherwise, you wouldn't be here. CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Welcome back. When I was a college student many, many years ago, I started keeping or writing a diary, if you will, which got to be just a compilation of the movies I was seeing each year. Waymond Mitchell here sees about 150 movies a year. Is that because of your work, I hope, or you just like going to the movies?
Waymond: I just love going to the movies.
Alex: Yeah?
Waymond: Yeah.
Alex: What type of film do you enjoy more than any other?
Waymond: I guess if I had to pin that down it would be science fiction.
Alex: Yeah. Okay. Yeah, they're very popular.
Alex: Okay, Zora Shinn, a retired attorney from Solvang, California, who once sang in a community chorale, and you guys, I understand, toured Europe, right?
Zora: We did. My husband and I sang in 2006 with a group from Solvang and the Santa Ynez valley, and we went and sang in cathedrals in Vienna and, um, Venice and beautiful places. And then we had a great time at a winery, all 60 of us.
Alex: Oh, hello! Hello!
Zora: A lot of fun.
Alex: That was probably the highlight of the trip, I take it.
Zora: It was.
Alex: Yes.
Alex: Joshua Brakhage is our champion. He's from Oklahoma. And he does something which I would not do myself. You like to listen to Christmas music all year long?
Joshua: That's--yes. But much to the annoyance of my friends when they get in the car with me, too.
Alex: So you have CDs--
Joshua: There's probably albums there for the past 10 or 15 years that I honestly can't get enough of.
Alex: So there aren't too many of your friends who like riding with you, right?
Joshua: That's right.
Alex: Okay. Good.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Zora found the Daily Double on the 18th clue. Joshua had $4,200, Zora had $1,200, and Waymond was at $2,000. Zora wagered $800.
GEO-POLITICIANS $600: Alamo is the seat of the Tennessee county named for this frontiersman and Congressman
(Zora: Who is Daniel Boone?)
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
EYE ON SPORTS $800: Saying he'd be considered legally blind without specs, this golfer got LASIK in 1999, then--natch--won the Disney Classic
GEO-POLITICIANS $800: The last U.S. president to have a county named for him (in N.M.), he may be best known for the Teapot Dome scandal
LET'S MAKE A QUILT $400: The 19th-century style of quilt named for this Maryland city can fetch 6-figure sums at auctions today
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Joshua: $6,000
Waymond: $3,800
Zora: $2,400

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
OLYMPIC HOST CITIES
VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Zora: Wager $4,001 to cover Joshua, but no more than $5,599 so as not to fall behind Waymond's doubled score.
Joshua: You have the hope of surpassing Zora if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $6,001 to force Zora to wager to win while also protecting your position from being usurped by Waymond.
Waymond: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.
FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
When this city hosted the XIV Winter Olympics, it was located in a different nation than today

Waymond: $5,200 + $5,200 = $10,400 (What is Sarajevo?) (3rd place: $1,000)

I coulda sworn he said Mark AntHony.
Instaget FJ, followed by a few seconds of discomfort, trying to remember which Winter Olympics were the 14th, then realizing that I don't even know what number the most recent one was, and sticking with my original answer.
Or my favorite, Etch A Sketch. Ouch. Given his habit of repeating part of the clue as his answer, it was probably just nerves. Poor guy.econgator wrote:A propeller yarmulke? Ok ....

Re: Thursday, January 24, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
On each of the four games this week, I've done slightly worse than the previous game. Anyone else have a similar pattern?
I got FJ, then tried to do some quick mental arithmetic to double check that it was plausible. 14th Winter Olympics = fifty-something years after they started. I remembered the Sarajevo Olympics being roughly around 1984, and figured that's probably consistent with the Winter Olympics starting in the 1920s, which I think is the case. Some Winter Olympics were probably missed for WWII, but I wasn't that concerned with doing the arithmetic perfectly -- just wanted to double-check that "14th Winter Olympics" was vaguely consistent with "1980s" in a rough overall kind of way.

The TofC field is not totally filled yet as Joshua could win MOnday with more than $21,995 won between tomorrow and Monday and lose Tuesday and still make the cut
Re: Thursday, January 24, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Weird game for me. I actually did better in DJ! (11/30, 14/29), which I almost never do.
Eye on Sports was my only 0/5 tonight.
4/5 in Vowel, guessing balaclava on the last clue. Missed lobster and Lender's on the food clues.
4/5 in Weather Songs as well, missing only "Heat Wave".
The first two Back clues eluded me, but I got spina bifida (since my HS science teacher has a daughter with it) and the overvalued scoliosis. Similarly, no clue on the first three Waterfalls, but got the bottom two with ease.
No guess on FJ!

I usually watch Jeopardy! on channel 45 from Cincinnati, which shows last year's episode at 6:00 p.m. & the new one at 7:30. Unfortunately, three times this week a commercial during the 6:00 show has shown Alex saying, "He has averaged $20,003 per win," along with a picture of Joshua. So I knew Joshua would win tonight. Oh, well, I still enjoyed the show.

Re: Thursday, January 24, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Although it seems like it could be possible that they chose the end of the taping of this week's shows as the cutoff for setting this year's TOC field. The next taping was presumably split, with all 5 shows being taped in one day, but 2 airing before the Teen Tournament, and and the remaining 3 airing after the TOC. So even if Joshua does win 4 games, then loses Tuesday, I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't a part of the upcoming TOC. Just my two cents.legendneverdies wrote:The TofC field is not totally filled yet as Joshua could win MOnday with more than $21,995 won between tomorrow and Monday and lose Tuesday and still make the cut

Paul Glaser lost his sixth game on the last taped regular game before the Fall 2007 TofC, which did air on a Friday, and the TofC started the next Monday. ISTR Alex saying at the end of that game Paul would be in the next week's TofC.jeff6286 wrote:Although it seems like it could be possible that they chose the end of the taping of this week's shows as the cutoff for setting this year's TOC field. If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

Instaget FJ. It looked as though Alex had jinxed the champ with his pregame chatter, but then Zora whiffed. I could spill the beans about whether Joshua is in the ToC field or not, but y'all will find out soon enough...
Why couldn't I score a quilting category?!?! I ran that sucker.

Hooray — for once a brain flash instead of that more common cranial eructation. Sarajevo bloomed in my mind with about 6 to 7 seconds left.
Hey, Chicago viewers: Did you experience the same interruption I did in the J! round? Viewing today's show via DVR, we unfortunately saw the screen blank out after the fifth clue or so, then saw an inexplicable succession of Inside Edition promos before the show resumed with a few clues left before Double Jeopardy! I'm wondering whether somebody at Channel 7 goofed and put their previews on the air, or maybe it was the cable company at fault. Anyone?

Sarajevo came to mind right away, but I wasn't sure if it was summer or winter. I never thought of anything better, so I left it blank. Oh wait, never mind

I knooooooow. A sports category AND a quilting category on the same board? My dad quilts. My mom got me into sports. We could have been united! So did I.Dr. J wrote:Why couldn't I score a quilting category?!?! I ran that sucker.
My "why couldn't I have had that?" moment (well, one of them, anyway) was last night's FJ.
