Very surprised Main Street was a TS. Without checking the archive, it seems Vijay Singh crops up a lot. Then one category left where the DD is and they start at the top? Ugh.
Alex stating FJ was very difficult? Are you joking? How can contestants answer the ISS when it's still up there with an American in orbit? Admittedly, that answer is better than TPH saying "MIR? Never heard of it. Why would they name a spacecraft after a reflective device?"

Maybe he said it was difficult because he saw Rachel and Christine struggling with it? Dunno. Seemed pretty easy to me as well. I suppose it was sort of a binary screw with ISS as negbait, but only if literally the only thing you know about space stations is "There are or were two of them, Mir and the ISS, and I don't know anything about the dates they were up there."Golf wrote:Very surprised Main Street was a TS. I had a couple of annoying blankouts on low-dollar questions today, the worst being Saudi Arabia since geography is my specialty. No hesitation on the rest of that category though.
Re: Tuesday, March 26, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Another somewhat easy board for me. 19 and 10 right.
I got only $600 in Compact (Never heard of "social contract", and saw no way to get "war" out of $400.)
Got only $1200 in "Bia". Nearly said Serbia on $400, and Colombia just wasn't coming to me.
Any reason I should know that musical at $400 is 1776 and not any other "big" year in US history?
0/5 in Unfinished.
Oh, so it's "lascivious". I thought it was "laviscious".
Not a guess on FJ!

You could add Skylab there, too, as another space station (although obviously way too late for that).TryphonTournesol wrote:Maybe he said it was difficult because he saw Rachel and Christine struggling with it? The date on the wall was July 4th, so go with the obvious.TenPoundHammer wrote:Any reason I should know that musical at $400 is 1776 and not any other "big" year in US history?

That has to be it, because the only other hint missing from that clue was "Russian space station". I'm absolutely stunned that it was a single get. What an odd way for the champ to go; for a while I thought we had a keeper.TryphonTournesol wrote:Maybe he said it was difficult because he saw Rachel and Christine struggling with it? Strong work by the contestants on that FJ; at least no one said Skylab.

I didn't see it, because I don't watch on a very big TV.econgator wrote:The date on the wall was July 4th, so go with the obvious.TenPoundHammer wrote:Any reason I should know that musical at $400 is 1776 and not any other "big" year in US history?

I clammed on "Main Street" at home. I have a single neuron that stores Upton Sinclair and Sinclair Lewis and it is basically a 50/50 guess each time they come up. I new "Main Street" was one of them, and almost said Sinclair Lewis, but having Upton Sinclair in the clue confused me. I had no idea they worked together - now I've got another reason to confuse them.Golf wrote:Very surprised Main Street was a TS.
Rachel bet too much on that last DD - she was up by ~10,000 and wagered 2000 with about a category and a half left. Time to wager small and stall.

What was saddest was Alex going all TPH on us and not being interested in what a scissor arch is. Here's one now:
Yeah, AP, I was thinking Skylab (sorry), but figured it had to be Mir. ISS wasn't a very good guess, though. I thought Rachel was going to be very tough to beat.

One of my better games! Overall 51r/3w/6 clams
decent round one- 23/2/ 5 clams
Scrambled Fish: ran effortlessly
Pultizer: got the first one, and the last 3 including the DD, but did "Byrd" for the Admiral of the open sea.
GH: all but the rhyming one at the bottom
Compacts: 4/5, missing only the top-row clue.
Hello Larry: 5/5
Sub-compact: got the first one, then clammed the rest. ouch
Great DJ too: 28/1/1
Unfinished: all but the 2000 clam
Crime: 5/5 (thanks, L&O)
German: ran it, and definitely would've gone bigger on the DD, being a language maven
Musicals: 5/5, and (below)
Novelist: all but the 2000 clam.
Bia Nation: 5/5
Instaget FJ. Surprised at the ISS guesses. Where do they think the Americans have been staying lately? My thought was people might badly misremember Skylab's demise. Any other good wrong guesses?
Showboat, BTW, was written by Edna Ferber. I'll bet nobody here knew that!
in American Novelists, had some help on Main Street, since I always get the writer confused... is it Upton Sinclair or Sinclair Lewis? Thanks, clue!
Musical Theatre definitely would've gone either huge of wimpy on the DD. Rachel's 2000 offered more risk than reward, it seemed. Getting it right doesn't boost her position much, but getting it wrong drops her into "too many possibilities" for FJ wagering.

Yeah, that was odd. Also, since I don't think she was quite finished talking, it seemed a bit rude.alietr wrote:What was saddest was Alex going all TPH on us and not being interested in what a scissor arch is.

Too bad Rachel lost the lock she had going.
I couldn't come up with the right name for FJ. Do you suppose they would have accepted "What is the space station that was in use right before the ISS?"

Re: Tuesday, March 26, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Scrambled Fish was one of those categories I had trouble with until I understood how it worked.
3/5 in German loan words. Couldn't come up with Bundt quickly enough, and while Zeitgeist wasn't NHO territory, it still wasn't a term I was exposed too much.
Skunked "BIA" with the $400 clue being a pretty embarrassing miss. For some reason, anything with part of the category in quotes is harder when the quoted portion is not in the beginning of the response.
I'm surprised that the International Space Station was even considered as an option in FJ!. I knew about Mir and the ISS replacing it. (Is it still up?)

I'm afraid all I could come up with was Skylab for FJ. Mir didn't occur to me.

I am kicking myself for not getting the response to the Kubla Khan clue. Studied poetry back in grade 12 english class and I distinctly remembered that name but for the life of me could not remember the author. Did a biographical assignment on him as well, oh my.
The clue with the answer Bring it On was one of those where I knew the answer, I just couldn't get it off my tongue quick enough.
I did much better with answers this time as opposed to my normal performance, even swept the Subcompact category and surprised myself by nearly sweeping the German Words category. It's episode like this where I dream of the big leagues.
