Re: Tuesday, April 2, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Without giving anything away.... based on today's NYT "Jeopardy!" question, I predict no one gets it in today's game.
I know I'm going out on a very very long limb here, but after trying to puzzle it out and finally going to Google, I could only find *one* on-line reference to this particular author quote. One.
I'll be thrilled and amazed to see if anyone gets it.
So much for my thought --- and those of others --- that the FJ questions were on an easy trajectory.

And, according to that reference, the original wording was different ("best known", rather than "known best").I know I'm going out on a very very long limb here, but after trying to puzzle it out and finally going to Google, I could only find *one* on-line reference to this particular author quote. For our basketball-watchers... or those forced to endure basketball preempting their Jeopardy!... this was sort of the Syracuse-Marquette of the week.

Very impressive performance by Rebecca in the first two rounds, though (realizing that not everyone can be strong in every category) I thought there were some odd triple stumpers: Netherlands given Delft, thyroid given goiter, and Isabella spotted Castilian queen in 1513. I also got Musharraf, Hodgkin's and the only one I shouted at the screen: GEORGE CLOONEY!
Facepalmed on Parkinson's, and Thomas Gibson was a "yeah, that guy, I can see him, he was on Chicago Hope, what's his name?", something I'm surprised doesn't happen more often at my age.
Maybe this is an appropriate time of year to refer to a difficult FJ as being akin to a jump ball. It doesn't seem like a stretch for Lisa to figure out that something in the 5000-6000 range will win in all cases where she can reasonably win--fortunately for Rebecca, she didn't. This does not take anything away from Rebecca's accomplishment; any successful J! player needs some luck.
Did anyone else hear Lisa say Ben AFLAC?

I can't believe Alex's comment to Rebecca. Funny though.

Very nice of Lisa to bet to not only allow Rebecca to get a spot in the TOC, but to get Shawn an extra $1,000.
Re: Tuesday, April 2, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Had a really hard time today.
====
I got the first two "And" books, and $400 and $600 in Wine. And that was it.
Starts with a Preposition seemed like it would be easy. But I've never heard of "withholding" or "aftermarket", I couldn't spit out "fromage" or "overbook" in time, and I think I've heard the word "upbringing" maybe once ever.
Is it really that well known that Daniel Craig was the first Bond born after the start of the film series? This seemed like total trivia.
Given how well they did in the Atlas category otherwise, I'm surprised French Guiana was a TS. I knew both that and George Wallace, but was blanking.
====
Also got only 4 in DJ!, all in Music. (Good Times was my only miss.)
No idea how I blanked on Gillette, since that's the exact kind of razor I've used since forever, and I just bought a new pack. Also blanked on Strom Thurmond and Parkinson's. Also, my brain said St. Augustine, but my mouth said St. Petersburg. (No, you dumbass, that's by Tampa. You were just there in December.)
====
Hair preparations? What the hell? Yeah, I got nothing. Terrible, terrible clue.

A bad FJ wager from 2nd place. *shakes head*
FJ was a tough one... I tried to brainstorm authors who had died in 2012 and only came up with Maurice Sendak.
Picked up some Lach Trash on Parkinson's, Thomas Gibson, and one or two others I can't remember now.
I said Procter & Gamble instead of Gillette (which is a P&G brand but no longer a company, as far as I know).

Re: Tuesday, April 2, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Hate that FJ!! Hate it with a fire and a passion and a fury. That is a train of thought I would expect from Wheel of Fortune.
Spoiler
The frustrating part is that my train of thought went
a) is Gore Vidal dead? I think he's dead.
b) when did he die? Was it really that recent?
c) who the *&^&^^*&( makes a Vidal Sassoon joke at Gore Vidal?
My eventual hope was that there was some author named Sassoon I'd never heard of. In retrospect, I should have written Vidal as the linking word and then you'd get to see my hilariously face when I realized I'd fallen into the right answer.

Like BADuBois, I googled earlier when I couldn't come up with an answer for the clue, and I didn't get the connection with hair preparations until seeing your FJ answer. I figured you must have been thinking of the right thing and weren't sure what they wanted or mixed up the names.NYCScribbler wrote:Hate that FJ!! Hate it with a fire and a passion and a fury. My reasoning on FJ went: Hair to hare to rabbit = John Updike. Probably should have remembered Vidal's death, but it's unlikely I would have made the Vidal Sassoon connection at any rate.

Rebecca's voice reminds me of Lori Beth Denberg of All That fame. This makes me happy.

Re: Tuesday, April 2, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
The J! round was particularly rough today, at least for me. I got a whopping $3,000 in the first round ($4,000 without negatives). I had four no-answers and a wrong answer in Words That Start With Prepositions, and only one right answer apiece in Actor Factor and Reality Hits You Hard (though I clammed on two answers I was thinking of that turned out to be right).
The DJ! round was far more forgiving. I entirely whiffed on Ponce de Leon, but I did get four of five on three categories (Music, "Sur", and Who Makes That).
God bless those of you who performed the mental acrobatics necessary to get FJ!

Had no idea what FJ was about. I too went from hair to hare to Rabbit Run to Updike.
Was anyone else bothered by Shawn's crooked tie, or is this simply another example of my OCD distracting me with trivial matters?

Oh, and Rebecca, I hope you are sending off a nice little sum to Lisa after you receive your winnings, as she was so kind to give you so much at the end there.

You have plenty of company in that regard, your humble correspondent included (and it didn't even cost me thousands of dollars). What the heck were they thinking with that clunker? And here we were complaining they were too easy. The best I could come up with was Updike as well (making the hare->hair pun connection).NYCScribbler wrote:Hate that FJ!!
