Plants
Economically speaking, this plant family with about 10,000 species is by far the most important.
Andrew Moore: $26,400-$16,401=$9,999
Padraic Scanlan: $21,400-$10,000=$11,400...now a 1-day champion with $11,400
John Simpson: $5,200-$5,199=$1

Spoiler
What is grass? John said grain; Padraic said rice; Andrew said corn.

Re: Tuesday, June 25, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Andrew made a couple of errors on very simple questions such as the easternmost U.S. capital.
Loved the aggressive DD wagering although Padraic might as well have made it a true DD as he's toast if he misses regardless.
Don't know if I've ever complained about a FJ clue before, but I thought this one was dreadful.
Smart wagering wins a game, gotta love it. Although now all the idiot haters will be happy.

Well, Alex did say "we will see Andrew in our Tournament of Champions", so there's no pleasing them.Golf wrote:Although now all the idiot haters will be happy.
(And of course, I avoid the clip on jeopardy.com but hear an ad earlier today where Alex introduces "giant killer Padraic", and I knew that whatever show there was a Padraic, he'd be Andrew's Dr. Moriaty. (Now that it's safe to go on jeopardy.com, I did notice that they got the postal abbreviation for Quebec wrong, it's QC, not QU. (Heck, they even got the wrong wrong one, it *used* to be PQ, but that was changed some time ago.)
(Although, I sitll don't mind too much the jeopardy.com spoilers, even today's, because I care more about clue spoilage than anything else.)

A Freudian slip by Alex at the end of today's show? After revealing the wagers he said, "And that makes Padraic our new Jeopardy host." That might not be an exact quote, but Alex definitely said "host."

Yeah, we'll see Andrew in the TOC, whenever you get around to holding the damn thing.
I agree Padraic might as well have gone all in, but there was still another DD left and enough time for him to get back in the game if he got it wrong. If he had missed it and then gotten the hummingbird clue and then picked the DD, the scores would have been $16,800/$4,600 and could have been within 50% if he doubles up. but I don't know how well known Sacco and Vanzetti are north of the border.
When Alex said that plant gives us corn, rice and wheat, I knew I was sunk. Those were the three I had written down before settling on rice. If Paucle keeps his streak alive today, my hat is off to him.

Isn't there some kind of unwritten rule that giant killers are usually one-and-dones?Bamaman wrote: If Paucle keeps his streak alive today, my hat is off to him.

Got kinda clammy today. The DD was my only get in Washington Math, although my mental guesses at $200 and $1000 were right.
0/5 in Mystery Meat. I've never heard of any of those foods.
Misread "Western" as "Southern" in Europe for $200.
Middle 3 right in World's Fair.
"Soccer style", at $200 no less? Huh?!
====
0/5 in Cape Town Ladies, only $400 in American History. I knew Seneca Falls but was drawing a blank. Also blanked on Shirley Temple.
DNA was my only miss in Little Category. That didn't look like no double helix to me.
3/5 in Sing a Song. I knew Mumford & Sons because that song was released to country radio. Missed the U2 song and the Celine Di-yawn song.
I thought that $1200 was by far the toughest in Doo-Dah.
====
"Includes rice, wheat, and corn" and it's not grain? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!?!?!?! I agree, lousy lousy lousy clue.
Padraic is the new host, huh?

What an episode! Lots of twists and turns. Some pretty good gets too. I liked this board. And I enjoyed the actual Forrest Bounce at work in J round.
But what a shit FJ! I initially said "grain" but decided it wasn't sciencey enough. So I switched to "grass," which seemed like would include the grains - as well as another 9,985 species.
Still, a rotten, inelegant question, and it's a shame that it ended the champ's run, even though Padraig's goofus bet reflected, once again, that bad bets tend to be round numbers or add up to round numbers.

What was wrong with it? Unless I'm misremembering the scores, he couldve wagered up to 11k safely, assuming Andrew makes the shutout wager.Austin Powers wrote:...even though Padraig's goofus bet reflected, once again, that bad bets tend to be round numbers or add up to round numbers.

What was wrong with Padraig's bet? He stayed above Andrew's MSBIW as well as John's doubled score. He could have safely bet another $999, but I don't see that being a horrible bet.Austin Powers wrote:

He stands to gain a couple of thousand more if he gets it. Not worth the risk of Andrew doing something weird, like his bet yesterday. Bet to overtake but no more.Bamaman wrote:What was wrong with Padraig's bet? He stayed above Andrew's MSBIW as well as John's doubled score. Re: Tuesday, June 25, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
My proudest moment of this episode: Working out the nickname of Morten Andersen on the fly, when given "dog breed". I didn't previously know it, but...
I was surprised that on a clue that mentioned the French and Indian War and asked for a river, the third contestant didn't guess the correct response after "St. Lawrence" and "Ohio" were both eliminated.
I had "rice" for FJ. I didn't love this clue, but of course we're all inclined to like the ones we get and dislike the ones we miss. Once Alex said words to the effect of "it includes corn, rice, and wheat", I changed my guess to "grass" but obviously that's too late to count.
I suppose the word "family" was the key? Rice is obviously one of the most important crops for human beings. But I suppose rice isn't a family, whereas grass is?

Well, a fun game for me --- loved the American History category and the journals category --- and my wife (being of French-Canadian descent) was rooting for the new kid. And Padraic pulled through, though my oh my, what a lousy FJ question.
Grass? Really? Grass? Ugh.

A Shortegecable FJ wager by Andrew would have given him another win. I wonder if I would have had the guts to make such a wager had I been in Andrew's position. I would have been tempted to, given today's category.
Confessor, I also heard Alex say host.

Re: Tuesday, June 25, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I am sorry to see Andrew go on such a crap FJ clue, but I have to tip my hat to the new champion. I enjoyed watching Padraic and I liked the way that he fought for the entire game.
Despite the awful FJ clue I mostly liked this board. I was happy to get the Lach trash on Athol Fugard. That is one that Andrew can't be leaving on the board when it's ToC time.
I wasn't sure if Padraic would know James Cook. The only part of that clue that got me to Cook was the year. And I agree that Padraic should have just bet it all (or left back maybe like $200) on that DD.
I had no idea on FJ. I guessed roses. But there is another plant that I was tempted to guess as a joke.

What do you do with tobacco? You burn it.
As in "crash and burn."
No worries! By this time tomorrow, I'll bet I can claim, "Ha! One in a row!"
