Sports Geography
Though they live elsewhere, Alan Page & Dan Dierdorf will both always be in this Ohio city where they were born.

Spoiler

I was a bit surprised that two people missed FJ--it seemed like one of the easier ones, but then I'm a big football (Colts!) fan, so...

Cool that there was a clue about Kate Middleton on the day the new king was born, and also an Alan Page question on the day the first woman on the Minnesota Supreme Court died.

Food category ate me again. Caviar came too late. I actually knew taquitos, but blanked on them. Humiliating miss, as I love Mexican food.

Got only $600 and $1000 in .orgs.

Never heard of the guy at $200 in Age. Chuck Norris was my only get.

Alex's Nikita Khrushchev sounded more like Tim Curry to me.

5/5 in Animal Groups, 4/5 in "Pal". Missed "palisade" as I didn't know it was actually a thing despite having heard of Palisades Center mall.

====

LTaM with two categories on the board? Where'd the time go?!

On Animal Groups for $1600, I saw "La Bamba" and instantly blurted out Los Lobos without realizing that they were talking about the film. I also thought Pussycat Dolls was a bit tough at $400.

0/5 in Novels.

====

No guess on FJ!

Alan with two rookie mistakes - phrasing in DJ and telling a story with his MLK response.

Lots of photo questions and folks struggled with them.

Blue Oyster Cult was horrible overvalued. In fact I would have switched it with the $400.

Not the sharpest game (and the endgame play by all was topsy turvy, with the leader being the only one trying to hunt the high value clues late). However, I'll take it after Friday's thalidomide baby.

Pleased the middle guy did well. Sometimes you think "oh they just want to say a preloader from Wyoming is on" but he did fine.

I like how Alan, until the bitter end, was giving too much info. Part of me is surprised that he didn't write "Cleveland, Michigan."

Anyway FJ was instaget once I separated Akron from Canton in my mind. However, it had this silly "literary" quality to it. Forever? Really? Even after the Bulgarians nuke Canton?

A plane's landing gear collapsed, with no fire and no serious injuries, but over an hour after the fact, WABC saw fit to give us 15 minutes of useless news coverage during which they just repeated the same info they told us at 6. No J! round for me.

Anyway, instaget FJ, very surprised it was a single get. Was hoping for something trickier, but that clue screamed HOF.

Daily Doubles were not his friend :D

Huh both times (during Johnny's intro and during the interview segment) I thought his stated occupation was "freeloader"; at first thinking he was trying to be cute, Alex's quizzical tone at the start of his interview, and the contestant's elaborating made me think "freeloader" was actually what people who do his job were called and it made for a slightly interesting story.

I blurted out something R-rated when he dove after the 2000 clue with a (1200? 1400?) lead. If they hadn't run out of time, I'm convinced Mary would've gone for the 800 clue even though down 1000.

That's actually a tough FJ if you're not a sports guy like me... the phrasing is very confusing if you don't know sports. Not surprised that only one of them got it.

Cursive was a stupid miss for me. I had it in mind, then switched to calligraphy even though I know the kallos -> beautiful prefix.

Agreed. Page is a justice and ate people, and Dierdorf was on MNf and says stupid things befitting a blubberpot occasionally, but I wouldn't expect someone who doesn't know football to know them.

The Pussycat Dolls have a big following these days, the category was Animal Groups and they mentioned "doll" in the clue. That's an easier clue than BOC.

DOn't imagine Alan would liked his stays in Trenton and Albany, assuming he's gotten to those two cities. Not the safest cities in the US :)

Mary would have won on a triple stumper given the betting in FJ!

OK, I take back my comment about this being a single get. Having reread the clue, I now realize that it didn't even mention football, and simply expected you to either know who those people were, or correctly interpret the clue as meaning they'd always be in the HOF -> Canton. Rough clue for the non-sports fan.

I too heard "freeloader" as the occupation and laughed quite heartily at that. It's certainly one way to not say "unemployed".

Ragtime and Napoleon on St. Helena dredge up bad memories.

Had to think a bit on FJ but got it handily.

Uh. No new king was born today. He is a prince. There is a big difference.

JFK. Ouch.

No clue on FJ, unfortunately. I thought Dan Dierdorf might have been a football player, but I didn't make the jump to Canton.

Otherwise, it was a really good game for me.
