CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Kim Carver is an attorney who's specializing in immigration law, and with all of the new changes in our immigration laws, I figure you're gonna be very, very busy for the next few years, right?
Kim: Yeah, it's a very exciting area.
Alex: But you practice alone. You have a solo law firm. Does that present problems
for you, or do you have to rely a great deal on assistants?
Kim: Well, I actually enjoy it because you have the opportunity to meet clients one on one, which is different from what a lot of lawyers get to do, who might never meet a client.
Alex: Okay. Good luck.
Alex: Jared Hall is a graduate student in global policy studies who backpacked across Southeast Asia recently with your girlfriend?
Jared: Yes, just in December and January of this past year.
Alex: What kind of an experience was that?
Jared: It was a fantastic experience. We visited Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Got to meet a lot of great people, see some amazing sights, and it's a region in the world that I hope to visit again.
Alex: Okay, good.
Alex: David Brown is our champion. He's from Palo Alto. And growing up, he had a love of the theater and would audition for a number of plays, musicals, and things like that. But you weren't always very successful?
David: No, unfortunately, I was cast in a lot of ensemble roles.
Alex: Which means what?
David: Playing things like dwarf number three, hipster number two. My favorite was fat dwarf number three. [ laughter ] So it's a little variety of roles.
Alex: Wait a minute. Fat dwarf number three. Okay, who would that --that's not Dopey. That's not Doc. Was it Sleazy? [ laughter ]
David: It was actually in "Hansel and Gretel," surprisingly.
Alex: Oh, okay.
David: It was in a children's production of that.
Alex: Sleazy is my favorite dwarf. Nobody else knows who Sleazy is, but I do.

New champ played a helluva game. He got the late DD wager half right betting to currently lock out 2nd but didn't factor in the last clue. Not often you see 1st podium get completely blown away by both players.

That was extremely impressive play by the new champ. I'm excited to see him tomorrow. The other two were good but he just overpowered them. I think he realized when he buzzed in that he shouldn't have, but he knew the answer so it worked out. Also, I watched this right after returning from IKEA.
I finally got an FJ! right this week. About time.

Impressive game by the new champ, although he should have bet more on the last DD (why not guarantee the lock if you're right?).
Instaget FJ.

Re: Thursday, July 25, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Wow, I had a lot of 4/5s today: "Be", blotter, US Cities, Overtime, Stringed Instruments, and "ND". Jeopardy writers, y u no let me have a run?
Blotter for $1000 was a major headslap. I couldn't think of any relative that fit, and wondered just what Alex was finding so funny about it. "Wife" wasn't coming to me in a billion years.
0/5 in Matt Lauer. Ashamed that I couldn't get Hugh Downs, game show fan that I am.
Thought for sure I'd run Stringed Instruments, but bouzouki got me. I said "lute", which I'm sure would've been BMSed, but no way was I getting to bouzouki even though I know what one is.
100 Grand is one of my favorite candy bars, and I can't figure out what company makes it?! That's almost as embarrassing as me missing Doritos on this episode.
French history? Yeah, I'm marking this as a "no" on my score sheet. I guessed my favorite animal just because I felt I otter try and put something down.

Got FJ with a few seconds to spare: "well, chalk up another missed FJ this week...wait, the heir apparent was called the Dauphin, err....dolphin? No, don't be stupid, they're different languages, just because they sound similar...screw it, got nothing better, dolphin it is!" Seems so simple, I felt like an idiot saying it, now I kinda feel like an idiot for not knowing what it meant before today

Same here. Not sure why I was thinking siblings/parents instead of the obvious (in hindsight). I rolled my eyes when I saw the category, thinking it would be another stinker (WTF was that Civil War category yesterday!?!), then after that Marco Polo clue I couldn't stop laughing.TenPoundHammer wrote: Blotter for $1000 was a major headslap.

Besides a.) randomly guessing my favorite animal and b.) setting up the bajillionth lame pun I've made on this board, my thought process involved c.) picking the only "marine" animal I could think of that could possibly be found in France, and d.) forgetting that France ISN'T FREAKING LANDLOCKED.econgator wrote:Good job.TenPoundHammer wrote:French history? (Although I was unintentionally right. The Eurasian otter can be found in France.)

Re: Thursday, July 25, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
This was my first time keeping score at home in about a week.
Overall, I had a good game, but in each round, I had one category where I performed abysmally.
In the J round, I went 1/5 in Not Matt Lauer (only got Shalit at $600, was leaning Brokaw at $400 but didn't pull the trigger), but I went 20 for 25 on the rest of the board.
In the DJ round, I went 1/5 in Literary Trilogies, but 21 for 25 on the rest of the board.
Embarrassingly, my one get in Trilogies was not LotR in the top spot. I was leaning that way, but wasn't sure it wasn't The Hobbit. I got the $800 clue without having previously heard of the works, just by continuing the pattern "hook, line, ..."
I got the Hirohito clue in the J round, but that clue seemed a little cryptic for top of the board. Typically in the $200 spot, the writers would include a word like "Japan" that would give it away a lot more.
My one neg in the game was an attempt at a rebound. When "Mars" was negged, I just went for it and blurted out "Hershey". That type of move can sometimes be good, although it was incorrect in this case.
I also missed "wife" at $1000 in Police Blotter, but thought it seemed somewhat obvious in retrospect. "Take my wife, please!"
FJ for me was about one or two seconds of "How am I supposed to know this?" followed by my recollection of having seen the word "dauphin" in the past and hoping that the obvious sound-alike was correct. I wouldn't have known the exact century that the title of "dauphin" was first used, and in fact, I never really knew its definition, other than sometimes encountering the word "dauphin" describing some young French prince. Turns out that was good enough.

I didn't even pick up on that pattern at all.skullturf wrote:I got the $800 clue without having previously heard of the works, just by continuing the pattern "hook, line, ..."

That was my line of thought too, except I couldn't pull Hershey either. I was thinking "well, if it's not Mars, then who the bleep is it?!"skullturf wrote:My one neg in the game was an attempt at a rebound. I was just telling somebody yesterday that the original host of Today was Dave Garroway. Spooked me a little.

It was a black and white photo of a man in traditional Asian dress. For a top of the category clue, that leaves only Puyi and Hirohito. Ho Chi Minh, Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-Shek might also be top of the category responses, but they probably wouldn't be in traditional dress.skullturf wrote:I got the Hirohito clue in the J round, but that clue seemed a little cryptic for top of the board. So with this FJ you found your porpoise?TenPoundHammer wrote:b.) setting up the bajillionth lame pun I've made on this board, my thought process involved

The Marco Polo clue is among my all-time favorites. Still can't stop laughing.

I felt bad for the woman on the end, who seemed pretty smart, having the bad luck to go up against a buzz saw rather than some of the more mediocre recent contestants.

Looking forward to the champ wrapping up the season tomorrow and the fun week that kids' week always is. Instaget FJ (Dauphin came up right away). Surprised to see 1st podium go down like this esp. after that marvelous performance on Tuesday (running 2 whole categories)

Instaget FJ! (I love it, as my name shows) and pretty good game for me otherwise. I ran that movie category, surprisingly
The new champ was pretty impressive; he played a great game. Kim was also, indeed, smart (especially compared to some recent contestants), but couldn't catch up to quick-on-the-buzzer Jared.

Jared Hall played a great game today and has a one day total of $31,200.
David was blown away by the other 2 players, seemed to have struggled ringing in today.
I got the Inkheart triple stumper right, didn't see it as too challenging of a question, I saw those books all over my school libraries.
Will be interesting to see how Jared plays tomorrow, and whether he'll be as sharp and on point as he was today.
