CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Erin Wenokur is from Lafayette, California. She is a 12-year-old who had the great experience of being on safari in Africa. Where were you?
Erin: Uh, last summer, we went to South Africa for two weeks, and we went to sabi sand, and we also went to the Kalahari Desert.
Alex: That must have been exciting.
Erin: Yes, it was very exciting, and--
Alex: What did you see that really blew your mind?
Erin: Well, we got to see lions--a pride of lionesses on a kill, which was really incredible. They were killing--they killed a full-grown kudu, which is like an antelope.
Alex: Yeah. That's a big animal.
Erin: Mm-hmm.
Alex: And a feast for them.
Alex: Jonathan Shoemaker is from Austin, Texas. He's an 11-year-old who caught a hog, partnered with your sister, right? And what kind of a competition was this?
Jonathan: It was at a place near Austin. It was called the Wild Hog Explosion!
Alex: Now, is this a greased hog, and it makes it even more difficult to catch it?
Jonathan: Just fat and hairy.
[Laughter]
Alex: Just fat and hairy, and you and your sister did well, and you caught it?
Jonathan: Yes, sir.
Alex: Okay. Good for you.
Alex: Zoë Assasie is from Urbana, Maryland. And we mentioned in our introduction of you today that you would like someday to own a restaurant of your own. What is it about food that intrigues you so much?
Zoë: Um, I don't know. I think it started with my grandmother and just, like, my family. They started cooking, and I really liked how it would taste good and it would always make me happy when I would have, like, someone's food, so I was like, "Oh, maybe one day I want to have that same experience."
Alex: Okay. What food makes you happiest?
Zoë: I think there's too many to decide from.
Alex: Okay. Good for you. Varied taste.
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND

Erin: $4,600
Zoë: $4,200

Re: Monday, July 29, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
An appropriate (and instaget) FJ for what I considered to be a rather dull game, even for Kids Week. Also a very unsatisfactory end, the clue could've been worded a little better. Reminds me of another FJ, though I can't remember the exact details.
Re: Monday, July 29, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Nice to know that whiffing the first two in Bible ($200 just completely failed to connect, and I can never remember who Judas is) didn't cost me my chance at my first ever 30/30. I've NHO Fierce Five or an iPad Mini, and I picked the wrong Arlington on Screen for $1000. (Even worse, I said "What is Te— no, Virginia?")
12/25 in DJ!, no kidding. Kids' Week DJ!s always pwn me for some reason. Probably because they throw in pop culture that I'm too old for, like the name of the kid in Diary of a Wimpy Kid. "Bright Flight" was a stupid miss; I couldn't think of a word meaning "a trip on an airplane" other than "ride". Derp. Also missed the middle three in Presidents, although I clammed on Cleveland out of fear that I'd gotten him and Garfield mixed up again.
Surprised they had a clue on Invader Zim. That show was canceled before most of these kids were born, it wasn't very long-lived, and it could probably be seen as a cult classic at best. (I love it, though.)
Even more surprised that FJ! was a TS.

This is the Father of Jonathan here. We're checking out the site! Final Jeopardy was rough for all three. Looking at old questions, I would guess that Jonathan would nail greater than 80 percent. This one really threw him. You also have to remember that kids these days don't have a great idea of just how thorough the unabridged dictionary is.
We had a great trip. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

I just said "The Wimpy Kid". I hope they would have accepted it. I don't know the character's name, and I don't remember the exact wording of the clue.
I don't know the difference between an iPod mini, iPod nano, etc.
I knew FJ was asking about something like "zzz" (didn't know how many letters, doesn't matter), but I almost said "Mosquito".
Then, I started thinking "Well, 'zzz' could really be lots of insects... Oh wait! Snoring!"

Re: Monday, July 29, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Note to self: You should have stopped dozing off on the category a long time ago. I wasn't expecting Parts of Speech to be a common bonds-type category, resulting in me having no clue for the $200 clue and saying "buttons on a VCR" for the $400 clue despite not expecting the kids to know what a VCR is.
The end of DJ! seemed slow.
The FJ! clue felt like it belonged in the regular games. I spent a good 15 seconds or so figuring out what the heck the last entry of an unabridged dictionary could be, then I finally got to the "zzz" part and made the leap to "snoring". (I didn't fall for the "sleeping" trap because not everyone makes annoying noises when they sleep.)

Thinking about what it was like to be on the Sony sound stage last summer, props to the kids who can do it and do it well. I was so wired my mouth was as dry as a desert all day long
FJ was an Instaget. And I thought it was cute to see the contestants' parents come up during the closing credits.

Thanks for dropping in! I agree that was a rather poorly-worded clue and wasn't surprised at the confusion. Your son acquitted him self quite well and he (and you) should be proud of how he did.drshoema wrote:This is the Father of Jonathan here.

Jonathan played a nice game, best part was the perfect FJ wager.

Perfect? I agree it was fine, but I don't think it was any better (although also no worse) than $5001.Golf wrote:Uh, no. Just no.StrangerCoug wrote:The FJ! clue felt like it belonged in the regular games.

ETA: And if Zoe's parents had spent time around here, I'm thinking she would have won.

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

I think the FJ would have been fine in a regular game. It took me a bit to figure it out.
Thanks for dropping by, Mr. Shoemaker, your boy did well.

Thanks. Betting on Final Jeopardy is especially tough in Kids Week because the Kids are so unpredictable in their bets. Jonathan is pretty good at Math, so he knew enough to bet to lock out 2nd place (although he beat it by $100 instead of $1) Had he been in 2nd or 3rd going into Final Jeopardy he simply would have bet the farm, because we literally have seen every behavior from kids during kids week, and doors are often left open that should be shut. Even this week has some curious results. Given that the Kids Final Jeopardy is usually pretty simple, it seemed like the right play (which of course guaranteed he would get a FJ question he would miss!)

Or Zoe herself. We've had Kids Week contestants here before (or, more prezactly, on the old Sony board). I seem to recall the genesis of "stay clam" was from a conversation involving kids week contestants (past and yet-to-be)bpmod wrote:Perfect?
