2: Maquiladoras – factories operating in free trade zones – sparked an increase in economic activity in McAllen in this U. S. state.
4: The Gulf of Nicoya separates the Nicoya Peninsula from the rest of this country, of which San Jose is the capital.
6: The highest peak in the Sierra Madre range is the Volcan Tajumulco in this country directly south of Mexico.
8: American forces have twice captured this Mexican port city; once under Winfield Scott during the Mexican-American War, and once in 1914 after the Tampico Affair.
10: The Tipitapa River sometimes connects these two large lakes, one named for the country it's in, the other named for the capital.
