2013 Summer Hiatus Challenge -- Round 7, Day 5

Post by DadofTwins »

First a big thank you for all of the well-wishes this weekend. I'm still not full strength, but I'm feeling better enough to be functional, which is a welcome change of pace since Friday.

The schedule update: R7D5 and R7D6 will go live today. We'll take today and tomorrow to play them. Wednesday will be spent bookkeeping, and the TOC will start Thursday. We'll have 2 TOC rounds this week and 4 the first four days of next week. Once everybody is in, we'll do the awards ceremony Friday evening.

There are still spots to vie for, and a lot of people in the running, so good luck to everybody.

COOKING EQUIPMENT

2: This part of a knife blade covered by the handle is usually made of metal, so drinking it in space would be, well, inconvenient.

4: “National” name for the large, cast iron cooking pot Australians call a bedourie and South Africans call a potjie.

6: Held one way, this 8-letter object can be used to strain spaghetti; inverted, it becomes religious head wear for pastafarians.

8: This serving vessel, typically filled with espresso, takes its name form the French for “half cup.”

10: Bill Monroe was not making potato chips or grating carrots when he used this to create “Blue Moon of Kentucky.”

YOU ASKED FOR IT

3: DISPROVEN AND REPROVEN SCIENCE IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS – Two years after the release of the movie “Return of the King,” homo floresiensis – a 3-foot-tall species of hominid nicknamed this and previously believed to be mythological – was discovered in Indonesia.

6: PLAYING DOCTOR IN A BUGS BUNNY OPERA – This name appears on both a brand of fertilizer and the wedding cake Elmer Fudd falls into in “The Rabbit of Seville.”

9: THINGS ON M*A*S*H* DADOFTWINS' CAT IS AFRAID OF – Loud noises? Check. Oscillating fans? Check. The floor? (I kid you not). Check. People he's never seen before? Check. These edible containers for ground meat used in a M*A*S*H* episode to build an artificial kidney? Sigh. Check.

12: CINEMATIC JIMS IN UNAUTHORIZED SEQUELS – James Russo played Rocky Graziano in “The Bronx Bull,” an unauthorized 2013 sequel to this 1980 movie starring Robert De Niro.

15: THE BARRY MANILOW OUEVRE BY THE NUMBERS – Written by Johnny Mercer, “When October Goes” was the biggest hit off the 1984 album titled this time “Paradise Cafe.”
