Alex: Andrew Mugica is from Libertyville, Illinois, and at his wedding, his wife surprised him with something very different. What was it?
Andrew: Yes. We had a normal wedding cake, but she surprised me with a groom's cake that was a replica of Wrigley Field made out of chocolate and raspberry, and it combined my three favorite things --my wife, Lauren, the Cubs, and cake.
Alex: There was no World Series trophy on the cake, was there?
Andrew: [ chuckles ] Why you got to rub it in, Alex?
[Audience oohs]
Andrew: Ouch.
Alex: Hey, I'm a Dodgers fan. What do you want?
Alex: Sarah Zucker is from Los Angeles, and she works for an Internet company. And what do you do for that company?
Sarah: Well, we have the specific mission of bridging the gap between the analog and the digital age, and we say it's our mission to keep the Internet human.
Alex: Okay, now, when we're dealing with language, there are computers now that I can talk into, and they will translate into any language out there. Is that correct?
Sarah: That's true, but for any language --they might speak it. It still isn't just like the human touch.
Alex: Okay. [ chuckles ] I understand that. Mm-hmm. Gosh, I'm starting to sound like Forrest Gump. [ laughter ] And that worries me.
Alex: You were going to say something, Neal? Is that --what, you were gonna pick on me?
Neal: I'm waiting for your cue, boss.
Alex: Okay. Now, you have a child that you want to take on a trip to a place that you don't normally expect to take your kids to visit.
Neal: That's right. My 10-year-old son Elijah Is a big video-game player, and he wants to go to South Korea because that's where all the best gamers are, and they have these wild video-game tournaments, and he wants to either participate in or at least witness one, so...
Alex: Okay, are there big prizes if you win these tournaments?
Neal: Bigger than this game.
Alex: Okay.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Neal found the Daily Double on the 18th clue. Neal had $6,000, Sarah had $1,200, and Andrew was at $2,200. Neal wagered $3,000.

THE GOOD $1000: The brainchild of this school's famed media lab, One Laptop Per Child provides cheap computers to kids worldwide
THE UGLY $400: This word for an aerial battle is the title of a movie about another contest, to find the ugliest date
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND

Four-fifths for first place.
Sarah: Wager $11,701 to cover Neal.
Neal: You're faced with a legitimate choice in strategy. Andrew: If you think Neal is going to wager to cover you, try wagering less than $2,400 to beat Sarah and Neal on the Triple Stumper; or, if you think Neal is going to wager small in hopes of a Triple Stumper, wager between $3,401 (venusian, to top a $0 wager by Neal) and $9,200 (martian, which may win in some cases but may also risk dropping you from second to third place if you get Final wrong).

I'm looking forward to finding out the scores for this game, since the telecast in my market was preempted by the president's speech. Neal Pollack was playing well when the broadcast was interrupted, but I didn't even see the entire Jeopardy! round.

Re: Friday, September 27, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I can't wait to see today's edition of The Final Wager.
I was torn between the two Czech capitals, picked the wrong one. But I would have misspelled it anyway, so its all good.

There isn't two Czech capitals, only one, Prague. You may have meant to say Czechoslovak instead (referring to the country that, until 1993, included Czechoslovakia), but, again, it only had one national capital (again, Prague).Bamaman wrote:I can't wait to see today's edition of The Final Wager.

I know of Vienna and Bratislava being quite close to each other (55 km if I remember right, not the two closest national capitals (Vatican City-Rome and Brazzaville-Kinshasa are closer, there may be others less than 55 km apart as well)), didn't remember Hungary being close to Bratislava as well, but really couldn't come up with any reasonable alternative.
(EDIT: Yeah, just checked Google Maps and apparently part of the Austria-Slovakia-Hungary tripoint is within Bratislava city limits.)

I worked with someone from Vienna who used to tell me about visiting his girlfriend in Bratislava on the border about an hour away. I didn't know it was close to Hungary either, but figured there couldn't be another capital bordering Austria as well.dhkendall wrote:There isn't two Czech capitals, only one, Prague. In my market, they aired Double Jeopardy! before the contestant interviews/second half of the Jeopardy! round. It wasn't delayed or interrupted, just out of order. Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

Not a clue. Guessed Prague.
Re: Friday, September 27, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Never heard that "bad penny" proverb, nor of Gaia. 4/5 in both categories.
0/5 in Exercise. I knew all five answers, but was either drawing a blank, clamming, or just otherwise failing.
I didn't notice any visual cues to NYC on Flyover for $200. What'd I miss?

I'm sure you can guess which category I ran in DJ! Dwight Yoakam seemed like a really left-field pick though.
I have seen people named something-or-other, Esquire, but never knew what it meant until today.
Anyone else say "fell" on Irregular for $1600?
I saw "blah blah die cast" on Iconic Pentameter for $2000 and blurted out Julius Caesar. Oops. That whole category seemed out of whack, with R&J, Hamlet, and Macbeth being below the King Lear TS.
I had a bad case of the clams tonight, with 5 in J! and 6 in DJ! No idea why I got so gun-shy on Bears, but I clammed on $1200 down even though I really had no reason to.

No guess on FJ! as usual.

When Alex said, "less than a minute to go," the three contestants collectively went into brain fart mode.
I'll admit that, on FJ, it's easier if you have been to Bratislava. With that said, it's another example of the kind of question that a future contestant could get by devoting two hours in study prep by looking at an atlas.

Yes, I meant the two Czechoslovak capitals. I just remember the old country always being referred to Czech in a shorthand manner, so that's why I wrote that.dhkendall wrote:There isn't two Czech capitals, only one, Prague. You may have meant to say Czechoslovak instead (referring to the country that, until 1993, included Czechoslovakia), but, again, it only had one national capital (again, Prague).Bamaman wrote:I can't wait to see today's edition of The Final Wager.
I was torn between the two Czech capitals, picked the wrong one. But I would have misspelled it anyway, so its all good.
I couldn't remember the Slovakian country's exact capital name and had Bratslavia.

J! rules wouldn't give it to you, as you're missing a few crucial sounds there, but DoT rules (and mine) would give it to you because it's clear what you're going for.Bamaman wrote:Yes, I meant the two Czechoslovak capitals. If they negged me, nobody on the Sony Board would ever watch the show again.dhkendall wrote: J! rules wouldn't give it to you, as you're missing a few crucial sounds there, but DoT rules (and mine) would give it to you because it's clear what you're going for.

Sarah's DD
On the DD on the last clue of DJ!, I would have loved to see a wager of $1,600 - topping Neal if she's right, and giving scores of 12,600-10,900-9,200 if wrong. Sarah would have been in good shape for Final either way.

I was in Bratislava about 2 1/2 years ago. It was not the most exciting city I've ever been too but the people were much nicer than those in Vienna, a city that truly sucks. Anyway, after 2 consecutive missed FJ's (my first misses of the young season ), this was an instaget.
As for staring at an atlas, I've no problems with geography but I could spend six hours retreading all that mythology I keep forgetting & it wouldn't help. Ironically, I had no trouble in "Mything Vowels."
I rooted for the Cubs fan to win but that horrid bet ruined that.
