Re: Monday, October 7, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I never thought of myself as "old", but instantly answering Bob Barker for the Price is Right clue and Adam West for the Batman clue is starting to make me think otherwise ...

Re: Monday, October 7, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Clammed on Crosby, Stills & Nash, and blanked on Mötley Crüe.
Couldn't make sense of What The for $1000.
0/5 on One and Only. I said Sphinx instead of Pyramid at $200, and had no idea on the rest.
Surprised Fox & Grapes wasn't at $200. Choked on Mercury at $1000 since I wasn't sure if he had a Greek equivalent and I always get Greek and Roman gods mixed up.
====
Should've gone 5/5 on Trademarks, but I thought $1200 was asking for a brand, and blanked entirely on $1600.
What was supposed to lead you to Chris Christie on Less of the Celeb for $2000? That seemed very esoteric.
====
I was totally lost. Rocks -> Nerf was a very, very, very, very tenuous connection. I wouldn't have gotten to "Ball" given "Nerf".

I knew Drew Carey was who they were looking for, but Adam West was my first guess.dhkendall wrote:I never thought of myself as "old", but instantly answering Bob Barker for the Price is Right clue and Adam West for the Batman clue is starting to make me think otherwise ...
I just said "Nerf" for FJ and see no reason not to count it.
Lastly, surprised the gov't didn't shut down the National Monuments category.

Guessing the bets were bad - they looked bad. Anyway, bad sign when distant third wins
Irritated we didn't get to see all the world leaders
Second time in a week (other being that children's book FJ) where I just tossed up an answer for FJ and got it. I could see "nerf" being suggestive of cave men but I had zero confidence.
Tough break on nerf gun but you should only go "Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wills Wilde" when you are 100% sure.

Toys
A caveman-themed game in which "rocks" were thrown at other players led to the creation of this product in 1969.
Marc Muneal: $11,600-$10,000=$1,600
Cori Wilhelm: $10,200-$10,198=$2
Mary Murrell: $4,600+$2,500=$7,100...now a 1-day champion with $7,100

Spoiler
What is the Nerf ball? Cori said Nerf gun (invented 25 years later, says Alex); Marc said hackey sack.

Our house backs onto park land. After we hosted a book club meeting, I tossed the leftover food into the woods of the park. The next morning, I saw a fox come through the forest and take away the grapes.

I went with just "Nerf" and I'm counting it. Picked up some Lach Trash today, such as Clemente.

It smacked of a "celeb gossip you won't know unless you read the gossip sites" thing. But if he's the governor of NJ, I would say yes, I should know him. Even though I didn't before today.

Last I saw, neither Chris Christie nor Michael Moore lost much weight. But Mrs. Moore did dump the latter...
Dull game today with so many TSs so it was fitting that the game ended with a whimper. If I ever got on the show I'd keep my Golden Girls obsession to myself. Um, if I had one.

I too was wondering if just "Nerf" would be accepted, and I agree that it probably should be.
I found the caveman origin story in this Sports Illustrated article from 25 years later, but oddly, Wikipedia has a different origin story, which is of course unsourced. It gives the same inventor, but says that it was originally an indoor volleyball game.
Mental Floss has it as a combination of the other two stories, as it was first the caveman game with foam rocks, then one of the team members started bouncing one of the rocks over a net, and someone had the idea to transition it into an indoor volleyball game.
And finally, your useless trivia for the day: Reynolds Guyer, the inventor of the Nerf ball, also invented the game Twister, in 1965.

I'm sure they all are perfectly nice people, but I have to agree about the dullness of the game as a whole. Sometimes, for whatever reason, it just seems like there is absolutely no energy to the game, and this was definitely one of those times for me.Johnblue wrote: Dull game today with so many TSs so it was fitting that the game ended with a whimper.
