OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Hello, everyone. So far this season, it seems like the young, talented male players have been very, very dominant. Is that going to change today with Donna? She would like it to change, I'm sure. So good luck. Here we go. Dollar figures pop into the screens first, and then we reveal the categories, which are...

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Donna Laux, the young lady from Texas, is a marketing director. And, uh, took your first job at the age of 9?

Donna: That's right, Alex. I was a paper girl.

Alex: Oh. How many papers did you have to deliver?

Donna: I had about 45 papers on my route, and I saved the money and used it to finance a trip to Europe when I was 14.

Alex: Good for you.

Alex: Rob Landolfi, you were once in the Peace Corps, and you were once lost at sea. I wanna hear about that.

Rob: I was, while we were out on a, uh, research trip, and our engine died pretty early in the morning--

Alex: Where?

Rob: This is, uh, off the coast of Belize, uh, where we did our Peace Corps service, and luckily, we were able to construct a radio antenna out of some old sandwich wrappers, and signaled home, got a plane out, spotted us, and sent a boat out to get us.

Alex: My gosh, there's a television series there, I think, uh, and, uh, so try and peddle that idea somewhere. A lot of writers will, uh, be happy to deal with it.

Alex: Chris, over to you now. High school college prep counselor. A native of New Orleans. Now I've been in on a lot--I've been in a lot of parades. In New Orleans, the great fun is not being in the parade, I think, but watching the parade, and being able to collect what?

Chris: Well, in my case, I-I was very lucky. I got to go down to Mardi Gras right after the Saints won the Super Bowl.

Alex: Oh!

Chris: Um, Drew Brees was King of Bacchus. He was throwing some doubloons with his face on them. I did what I had to do to make sure I got one.

[Laughter]

Alex: Okay. Let's move on, shall we?

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
BLU-RAYS $600: Time travel info is on the Blu-ray of this Jake Gyllenhaal film, & you don't have to access the title "Code" to get it
(Donna: What is The Time Traveler's Wife?)
(Rob: [Shakes head])
(Chris: What is Donnie Darko?)

WHO MAKES IT? $800: Ivory Soap

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Chris: $10,400
Rob: $3,400
Donna: $400

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Rob snagged the next Daily Double on the 2nd clue. Chris had $10,400, Rob had $3,800, and Donna was at $400. Rob made it a True Daily Double, wagering $3,800.

LITERATURE $800: Chapters in this James Bond novel include "Gem Quality" & "Hot Ice"

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Rob who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 17th clue. Chris had $20,800, Rob had $11,200, and Donna was at $4,800. Rob wagered $10,800.

BLUE RAYS $800: The blue light in the pools of water in these power facilities is called Cerenkov radiation

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
"G" WHAT A COUNTRY $1200: This New World country gained its independence from Spain in 1821

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Chris: $28,800
Rob: $22,000
Donna: $6,400

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
THE OLYMPICS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Three-quarters for first place. Shore's Conjecture.
Chris: Wager $15,201 to cover Rob, but no more than $15,999 so as not to fall behind Donna's doubled score. If you're a fan of shoretegic wagering, you might risk $2,401.
Rob: You ought to wager between $6,801 (venusian) and $8,400 (martian), thereby safely covering a $0 bet by Chris.
Donna: Too bad for you, Donna, your score is less than Chris's score minus Rob's score. Unless they both commit an egregious wagering error, you've no hope of moving into first place. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Aside from racquet sports, one of the 2 other Summer Olympic sports in which men may currently compete against women

FINAL SCORES
Donna: $6,400 - $5,000 = $1,400 (What are diving?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Rob: $22,000 - $8,400 = $13,600 (What is archery?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Chris: $28,800 + $15,201 = $44,001 (What is Dressage?) (2-day champion: $82,901)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $6,200

GAME DYNAMICS
Image

CORYAT SCORES

Combined Coryat: $43,600

BATTING AVERAGES

(Rob: What is the Arc de Triomphe?)

PROHIBITION $1000: This "Little Flower" N.Y. rep. (& later mayor) believed that God would disapprove of prohibition

"And I don't think that he intended the use of grapes to be made into jelly."
(Alex: He looked a lot like Lou Costello, didn't he?)

PROHIBITION $200: The scene for prohibition is set with the 1829 inauguration party for this president; it moved outside due to drunken revelry

ADD A LETTER $600: Here's a "riddle"; now add a letter & it's this hot, flat cooking surface
(Alex: Yes, with a minute.)

WHO MAKES IT? $1000: Inspiron laptops

Board was average. Landmarks felt teen tourney easy. So did G What a Country (22/27, 22/30). Chris, amazing. $44,001 in one day. Rob gets the award for ballsy wagering on Daily Doubles. That was unbelievable the first time, forget the second time.

Came up with equestrian immediately, never would have pulled out sailing. Congratulations, again!

Wow, Chris is good. He seems to be very good across all categories and is fast on the buzzer.

I have to give mad props to Rob for actually knowing how to wager on Daily Doubles. He gave it everything he had and just came up short.

I had no clue on FJ and guessed the long jump.

Yes, Rob was a very smart player, gutsy wagers were required in this game. Just bad luck to come up against someone equally good in Chris.

I'm not sure how I would've done on FJ if I'd been playing this game. I heard the players discussing the game and FJ answer in the hotel lounge before I heard the question itself. I never would've thought of sailing. Equestrian, maybe.

Why oh why couldn't they have had ANY of this week's FJs last Friday? Sigh. (IMHO all all last week's FJ clues were harder than this week's. But that's probably just me. Equestrian was an instaget; I'd never have thought of sailing.)

Chris is on fire. Very, very impressive. Let's see if he can keep it up next week (and I won't be one bit surprised if he does). Props to Rob for gutsy DD wagers; I only wish I had been so bold on mine.

i've already confessed that i'm a huge chris fanboy, so i was cheering for him again "today". but when rob found those DDs and went big, we cheered and shouted. absolutely the right move, and it was a joy to see somebody who really recognized that and made the most of his opportunity. (that, and it was the only thing that could have kept this match suspenseful!) of course, he knew he was up against a monster. $44k without even picking up a DD? yikes.

when katie baker & i left the studio at the end of this tape day without having been picked to play, we didn't know which (if either) of us would be drawn into the first game of the next day to face chris. well, now you guys all know it was me... i'm kind of glad i didn't know that at the time, because i probably wouldn't have slept well.

Spoiler
What is equestrian or sailing? Donna said diving. Rob said archery. Chris said dressage, which is a discipline of equestrian.
Chris Fleitas: $28,800+$15,201=$44,001...now a 2 day champion with $82,901
Rob Landolfi: $22,000-$8,400=$13,600

I guess that I will be the person to point out that Chris and Rob both made the correct wagers for their positions, a rarity as we know. Perhaps it should come as no surprise after Rob's gutsy (and canny) wagering in DJ, but it was gratifying to see him wager intelligently in FJ.

Wow, what a game. I echo the previous comments that Chris was quite impressive and dominant for the second day in a row, and kudos to Rob for doing everything he possibly could to try to keep up. In the end it really didn't make much difference, since only Chris was able to correctly answer FJ, but Chris owes Rob quite a thanks for staying close enough to him that Chris had to make a hefty wager, resulting in him having over $80K in just 2 days.

A little further information on co-ed Olympic sports: The 2012 Games will feature a mixed doubles tennis event, for the first time since 1924. Badminton first introduced mixed doubles in 1996, and has had it ever since. I'm guessing that the reason they excluded racquet sports in asking the question was so that there would be no confusion over whether tennis was an eligible answer or not, since it won't actually hold the mixed doubles event until next year.

As for equestrian, women were first allowed to ride in equestrian events in 1952, but it wasn't until 1964 that a woman actually competed. Until 1988, sailing was a gender-independent sport, but now they appear to hold male events, female events, and open class events. Olympic Shooting used to allow women to compete with the men in disciplines that did not have a women's event. From what I can tell, this ended in 2000 when they added skeet and trap to the women's program.

Archery became a permanent part of the Olympic program in 1972, and it appears that since then there have always been separate competitions for men and women. I thought that maybe wrestling or weightlifting may have once allowed women to compete with men, since they would be competing against others of similar weight, but as far as I can tell, it appears that only men were allowed to compete until women's weightlifting was introduced in 2000 and women's wrestling in 2004.

Apparently men are still being unfairly kept out of the synchronized swimming competition, as well as rhythmic gymnastics. Despite all that Saturday Night Live did to show that men could swim in synchronization just as well as women, it appears that we still have a long way to come to reach full gender equality.

I also had equestrian, never would have gotten sailing. The DDs made it appear closer than it was, overall a dominating win for the champ.

I could not guess either sport in time to solve the FJ clue. It was a frustrating think time to go through so many sports and know they were all wrong. With time running out I figured it had to be a water sport and I scribbled rowing just to have something down.

If equestrian/dressage had come to me I would have known that was fine to lock in. Instead this city slicker didn't get there in time. It's a good clue as long as I'm playing it from home.

Judges: I had open house for housewarming in Suprise Party. Yes, a house on sale is shown on weekends by the real estate agent to bring on the prospective buyers & lookie loos is called an open house. But, I have received/seen invitations to housewarming parties where the event is also called an open house party.

Rob hit DDs worth 14600 and still trailed by 6800 entering FJ. Chris hasn't been fully tested on sports yet, but he seems to be able to handle just about everything else thrown his way. If Chris seems destined for anything it's finding all three DDs in a game. He seems too good to only be at 50% uncover rate so far.

I know how you feel. I was ticking them off as fast as I could. Unlike you, though, I went right through dressage and hadn't the slightest clue that it was correct. Nor would I have gotten sailing. I just had zero chance on this one.

Separate. The men's marathon is typically one of the last events held, if not actually last.

Perhaps Rob is a secret boardie?

Equestrian was an easy get (I said "dressage" personally, in case "equestrian" was a BMS) mainly because the athlete in these events isn't a man or a woman! (Reminds me of something I heard a comedian say, talking about an equestrian participant getting a positive drug test. "That's just stupid, why are you testing the person? He's not the athlete, he's riding the athlete!")
mennoknight wrote:More Taio Cruz please! Ima rock dis board like it's di-no-mite.
Once I saw the category, I was hoping Taio Cruz would come up. Primarily because in a game not that long ago at all (especially since it was recently shown in repeats), this exact same piece of music was played ("Current Music", $800), I'm pretty sure it was the exact same clip! (Cruz must be on a Sony-owned label). I've heard the song several times, but didn't know the title, this episode cemented the title in my brain. I literally LOL'd (and mennoknight may have too) when this was a stand-and-stare today - just like it was back then! If Sony wants to hang on to some of their money, the best way to do it it seems is to play that song to three old fogeys.
