Game Recap for Show #6741, 2013-12-30

Jerry Slowik game 3.

CONTESTANTS
Alexis Browsh, a teacher and tutor from Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
Armen Terjimanian, a web content producer originally from Troy, Michigan
Jerry Slowik, a writer from Arlington Heights, Illinois (whose 2-day cash winnings total $49,998)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Our last week of 2013 begins with a very good returning champion, and I have to wonder, though, why he didn't risk $2 more so that I'd be able to say, "You have won $50,000," instead of "$49,998". But you may change that today. Armen and Alexis, welcome aboard. Let's go to work. Here comes the Jeopardy! Round. The categories you have to deal with in this round are...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
FLYERS & FLYING (5/5)
CALIFORNIA FOOD FESTIVALS (4/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK

Armen: $1,400
Alexis: $1,000

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Alexis Browsh is a teacher and a tutor who has a serious problem--an addiction, I guess we'd call it, right?

Alexis: You could call it that. I enjoy gambling. But I combine the gambling with Jeopardy! by playing with my dad every night. We do $2 per round. And--

Alex: Per round?

Alexis: Per round. Double-or-nothing on Final Jeopardy!

Alex: And who's ahead right now?

Alexis: Well, my dad is not quite as ethical as I am sometimes in his scorekeeping...

Alex: Wait, wait a minute, wait a minute. Are you calling your dad a crook on national television?

Alexis: No, he always pays up, but sometimes the scores get a little muddled.

Alex: I see.

Alexis: It was good practice.

Alex: Okay. Good. Dad got a mention.

Alex: Armen Terjimanian, originally from Troy, Michigan. Did I pronounce your last name correctly?

Armen: Yeah--yes, Alex.

Alex: Now, you're training for a marathon.

Armen: That's correct. Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. This will be my fifth marathon in three years.

Alex: What's different about the Marine Corps Marathon? It's the same distance, isn't it?

Armen: It's the same distance, but you're running through, you know, Washington, D.C., through the monuments. You have the Marines--

Alex: I thought you were gonna say, "You have to run through gunfire."

Armen: Yeah, that, too, perhaps. But they start out the race, actually, with gunfire. You know, they got the cannon going. But, um, it's just a great race. I've had fun. This is the third time I'm doing it. I've had fun every time every time I've done it.

Alex: Yeah. if I were in one of those and the guys liked me, they--the gunfire would be aimed at my leg, and I wouldn't have to run at all.

Alex: Jerry Slowik is our champion. He has written a science-fiction novel.

Jerry: True.

Alex: Science-fiction--very popular these days. What's yours about?

Jerry: So I've head. It's, uh--it's about a woman who, um, is an inventor, more or less, and she gains the power to change the past... of those...

Alex: To change the past.

Jerry: Yes.

Alex: And does she work her magic powers in a positive way or a negative way?

Jerry: Positive. She's a heroine.

Alex: Okay, good.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Jerry found the Daily Double on the 29th clue. Jerry had $5,600, Armen had $3,400, and Alexis was at $1,800. Jerry wagered $1,400.

CALIFORNIA FOOD FESTIVALS $600: A visit to Gilroy's celebration of this stinking rose wouldn't be complete without a scoop of ice cream flavored with it

Armen: $3,400
Alexis: $1,800

Frankly stunned at that last DD question.

How is Ancestry.com a worthy question for a $2000 answer?

3/5 on Scrabble. Clammed on "equalize", and didn't notice "adjective" in $1000.

NHO "Happy Together" or The Turtles to keep me at 4/5 in Happy.

Good to know that blanking on Qantas didn't cost me the run in Logos, because I don't think i've ever seen Ferrari's logo before. (Am I the only one amused by the fact that an airline is using a kangaroo for its logo since a female kangaroo is called a flyer?)

The Wright Brothers published a newspaper?!? Forgetting the category had me baffled on that one. I also whiffed with "around the world" instead of "Transatlantic", which to me seemed like a total coin flip if you weren't sure.

0/5 in 1970s. Not a glimmer of recognition across the category.

Missed only Garlic in Food Festivals.

====

Identity Thief was the only one of those five films I had never heard of. I was too slow on Some Like It Hot, and Dumb and Dumber was obvious after the fact, but my brain refused to budge from "Jeff Daniels comedy = Escanaba in da Moonlight" even though the year was way off.

Judges: I assume that "collaborate", which also comes from "to work with", works on "Co" for $400? A run is on the line here.

Hitchcock was British?!?

Rapunzel and coefficient can join ancestry.com in the "way overvalued at $2000" club IMO.

====

No hope on FJ! Spent the whole 30 seconds trying to remember what "know" was in Latin and coming up empty. I wasn't getting "ignoramus" if you had spotted me "ignor". I don't think I've heard that word in over a decade.

Jerry is impressive!

I picked up Lach trash on "garlic"

I got FJ, so I wasn't an "ignoramus" on that clue!

Obviously you've never heard him speak.

I don't remember the cue exactly, but I suspect 'collaborate' would work (different root, but comes from the Latin for 'to labor together').

Sadly, FJ wasn't coming to me in the 30 seconds.

And, because I like the song:

I too did not know Hitchcock was British.
I had "idiot" for FJ and felt good about it, because I thought the prefix "idio-" as in "idiopathic" meant "unknown."

For Final, I began with words for "dunce" and picked the first one I thought of that sounded Latin.

Agreed about ancestry.com.

I went the no comprendo route and ended up with nincompoop. Which seems to have no clear origin, but I still like it.

Jeebus, J! clue writers, could you get the Scrabble point values correct next time? Many millions of people who have played know the 'bingo bonus' of 50 points. It behoves you to get that basic info correct (not that it's that useful- were contestants really adding up the face value of the tiles in their heads? I don't think so).

$200: FLAPJACK: 26 ^76
$400 EQUALIZE: 26 ^76
$600 QUIXOTIC:26 ^76
$800 OXIDZED: 26 ^76
$1000 ZOOLOGIC 20 ^70

Maybe they could just leave off the Scrabble mention and just call it "Crossword Clues" because that's what it really is.

All of those words could be formed without Bingoing, though.

I'd thought perhaps it was a LDS website. Ancestry.com seemed a little too obvious.

No clue on FJ. I tried to think of words for dunce, but didn't come up with the right one.

Then the category should be called LOW SCRABBLE SCORES or JQXZ words but declining to maximize the scores? Pretty unhelpful.

Lindbergh didn't lead you towards it being a transAtlantic flight?

No chance on FJ. I got stuck trying to make something out of nolo contendere as well. Didn't help when Alex laughed at me.

I wonder if he added the $2 to his bet (rather than betting the max safe amount) just to make Alex happy.

Worse, it felt like they were sacrificing an important Daily Double clue for a commercial.

Brands and business names are a part of the culture, so I expect them to be fair fodder for a test of knowledge, but it feels like more clues lately have doubled as product placements.

With a correct response on that last clue, Jerry Slowik accomplished a rare feat -- over the last eleven seasons, just eleven contestants have had a lock in each of their first three games:
Spoiler
Elizabeth Baxter, Travis Troyer, Brian Weikle, Anne Boyd, Jason Richards, Bill MacDonald, Steve Unite, David Skaar, Kevin Joyce, Ryan Chaffee, and Stephanie Jass.
Surprisingly, just one Correction: Just three of those people managed to do it in their fourth game as well:
Spoiler
Anne Boyd, Jason Richards, and Steve Unite (going further back I can add Rick Knutsen, Robin Carroll, Bob Harris, and Chuck Forrest...any others?).

ETA: Also Jonathan Groff and Michael Day, thanks to two posts in another thread. They join Rick 'n Robin ( ;) ) as the only contestants known to lock up their first five games...Chuck's fifth game was a lock-tie (which the Archive does not consider a lock), but since he was heading for retirement, it may as well be considered a runaway.
