CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Nowadays, we don't hear as much about the Peace Corps as we did 20 years ago, but it was very important for you, John Coulter. Tell us why.
John: Well, I met my wife there. We were both agriculture volunteers. And that was 20 years ago.
Alex: Where were you guys working at the time?
John: In the Dominican Republic.
Alex: Teaching or...?
John: Helping farmers reduce pesticides and with erosion --things of that nature.
Alex: Looking back on it --and forgetting about the fact that you met your wife there --good experience, great experience?
John: Toughest job you'll ever love.
Alex: You'll ever love?
John: Yes.
Alex: Way to say it. Good.
Alex: Bridget O'Donnell, a law-enforcement specialist from Vermont.
Bridget: Yes. Hi.
Alex: This lady is unique, ladies and gentlemen. She doesn't own...
Bridget: A cellphone.
Alex: Good for you. [Bridget chuckles] You are gutsy.
Bridget: I just like to not be in contact with people 24/7. And I think that it does not foster communication. I think it isolates people, the cellphone.
Alex: Yeah. Now, do you --to make this double good.
Bridget: Mm-hmm?
Alex: Do you also own a fountain pen?
Bridget: [chuckling] No, I don't. [laughing]
Alex: Darn! I was hoping for that one.
Bridget: Sorry.
Alex: Okay, our champion, Jerry Slowik. You, before earning a lot of money as a contestant on Jeopardy!, were earning extra money as a security guard where?
Jerry: Quite right. At an Asian supermarket.
Alex: Asian supermarket.
Jerry: Yes.
Alex: Has your experience allowed you to learn any of the Asian languages --Japanese or Chinese?
Jerry: Unfortunately, no. I've been trying. I know a few phrases.
Alex: But one of your ambitions is to attend the Olympics in Japan in 2020, is it?
Jerry: Yes. Hopefully make it there.
Alex: So you want to learn Japanese before that.
Jerry: It'd be a good idea.
Alex: Good idea. Okay. You can afford it now, you know.
Jerry: Yes.

NBC has hockey from 1-4PM(approx.) EST, ABC the Capital One Bowl from 1-4:30PM(approx.) EST, both NBC and ABC are carrying the TOurnament of Roses parade from 11AM-1PM EST. J! and WOF will probably air tonight if it airs outside of those times on ABC or NBC stations, or airs on a CBS CW FOX or Mynetwork station(barring local preemption)

Hooray for Channel 7 in Chicago, for once! When bowl game coverage was scheduled to go an hour past Jeopardy!'s start time, they decided to move J! only an hour later, not to the usual 2:07 a.m. Think that has anything to do with a 4-time champ from its broadcast area?
Poo-tee-weet? So it goes.

Surprised that "Buffalo Head Nickel" was accepted. Judges?

Re: Wednesday, January 1, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
4/5 in Dylan. I said "Door of Heaven" instead of "Heaven's Door" for some stupid reason.
NHO Pizarro or Garibaldi, and clammed on Voltaire.
"OMG" should've been a run, but "type of flight" had me thinking of styles of planes, or terms like transcontinental, nonstop, etc. Never would've gotten "nonsmoking". Also had a brain fart and couldn't pull Wyoming in time.
What was supposed to lead to Lincoln Memorial for $1000?
Roman was the only tough category for me in J!, with only $200 right.
====
"Gentleman" was my only miss in Mild. Never heard that expression.
Jerry had balls on that Writers DD.
Totally lost in Geographic Name Changes. What was the TOM for Istanbul on $400?
0/5 in Botany too. Had no idea that any trees have thorns. I clammed on rainforest and Linneaus since I thought both were overvalued.
-1/5 in Standard Time. I botched $400 by saying five instead, which flustered me badly on the next two. And I have no idea how many hours ahead any of Europe is. Is that kind of thing really common knowledge?!
Overall, my only other two gets in DJ! were $400 and $1200 in Cable. NHO the shows at $800 and $1600, and couldn't remember what network White Collar is on.

That TDD was great.
If I were Bridget I would have buzzed in on the last clue and guessed.
Got FJ! at about 25 seconds.

Ran the category "Walk On The Mild Side" (I ran a walk!)
Picked up Lach trash on "gram"
Didn't get FJ. I sometimes listen to the "TED Radio Hour" show on public radio, but I didn't think of TED.

Yeah, given there was a narrow range of possible answers on the last question, I thought she should have guessed.lisa0012 wrote:That TDD was great.

Got TED pretty quickly, but I've watched a couple of their talks.

Re: Wednesday, January 1, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I said "Buffalo Head Nickel." Why would it not be accepted?
This was a very easy board, except that I was completely lost in the "time zone differences" category. Maybe it's because I don't travel much, but I didn't think that time zone differences were something that I should know (although the top two clues were no problem).
I would have also gone TDD on the first DJ round DD, that Jerry found. Props to him for making the correct wager.
The female contestant looked like she had never heard of Carl Linnaeus when he was revealed as the correct response to the second DJ round DD. It ended up not mattering, but it's a good thing that she didn't wager almost everything, as I thought that she should have.
I had no idea on FJ. I really know nothing about TED, and I wouldn't have guessed that it has been around for that long.
I haven't been super impressed with Jerry's play in the J and DJ rounds, but he is 5/5 on FJs so far, so he could be one to watch when ToC time comes.

Yeah, I can't believe Bridget didn't realize she needed to guess at the last clue. That seems to be happening a lot lately.

I'm just glad we didn't have to remember what TED stands for - it's simple in retrospect, but I don't think I could have done it...

She doesn't even have the arithmetic excuse, given that her score was a nice round $10000.Jaksiel wrote:Yeah, I can't believe Bridget didn't realize she needed to guess at the last clue. That seems to be happening a lot lately.
Appropriately going TDD makes Jerry very easy to root for. That whole category was overvalued, though; Dostoyevsky could have been in the $400 box, given that he would have been the universal category pre-call.

Can someone give me the spelling of the two challengers' names on tonight's show? My screen was blocked by massive local weather bulletins during the introductions, and I couldn't make out John's last name at all.

5 post-DJ leads out of 5, four of which are locks, says much more than the 5/5 on FJ.StevenH wrote: I haven't been super impressed with Jerry's play in the J and DJ rounds, but he is 5/5 on FJs so far, so he could be one to watch when ToC time comes.

Instaget on FJ, though I thought it stood for Technology, Education, and Design.
Jerry is pretty impressive!

I have to disagree, since Robin Carroll and Jonathan Groff are two of only four contestants who won all five of their regular games in locks, before the "Sky's the Limit" rule was implemented (Chuck Forrest and Rick Knutsen were the other two).goforthetie wrote:5 post-DJ leads out of 5, four of which are locks, says much more than the 5/5 on FJ.StevenH wrote: I haven't been super impressed with Jerry's play in the J and DJ rounds, but he is 5/5 on FJs so far, so he could be one to watch when ToC time comes.

I'm not sure what your point is here. You seem to be agreeing with me and disagreeing with your previous post.StevenH wrote:I have to disagree, since Robin Carroll and Jonathan Groff are two of only four contestants who won all five of their regular games in locks, before the "Sky's the Limit" rule was implemented (Chuck Forrest and Rick Knutsen were the other two).goforthetie wrote:5 post-DJ leads out of 5, four of which are locks, says much more than the 5/5 on FJ.StevenH wrote: I haven't been super impressed with Jerry's play in the J and DJ rounds, but he is 5/5 on FJs so far, so he could be one to watch when ToC time comes.
