Begun as part of a 1930s project to reclaim Maryland mountain land, it's officially "Naval Support Facility Thurmont".

Jon McGuire: $10,000-1,620=$8,380

Ran Animals and Word Puzzles.
I thought Chip for $200 was very undervalued. Got the middle 3, then clammed on "Goodwill" since I couldn't think of a film name that sounded like it. A bit embarrassing since I shop at Goodwill weekly.
Gulf was the worst category for me, with only $200 right.
Overall, a very easy J! round with 20/30.
====
Is that Lou Gehrig category the longest name ever?
Brit Food from $1200 down was miles over my head. Derp moment at $800 when I couldn't think of a food associated with Cosby.
4/5 in Same Name. Another brain jam on $1200. "Oh, not Charlotte, the other Carolina's capital." But my mind was just latched onto Charlotte and would not let go. Hate it when that happens, and it happens EVERY. FREAKING. DAY!!!
I thought Hoover was a total YKIOYD in Lou Gehrig for $400. You can't even give us a year to go on? Cheap. That category was my only 0/5 today.
Was there an edit before the FJ! category reveal? Sure seemed like it was abrupt.

Did I insta-get a TS again?!? Wow.

Zero chance on FJ. Was 99% sure Ft McHenry was wrong, but hey.

Would have been really tempted to answer the Argo clue with "Argh go f--- yourself Trebek!"
Let's see now, ring in when the answer is a U.S. state and don't say a word. Truly brilliant. Give up a >2% chance to guess the right answer.
And of course only wagering $4000 instead of all $5600 turns a winnable game into a lock. Then when he has a free and clear $2k 2nd place prize going into FJ he risks that as well.
Do TPTB have a resolution for 2014 that no contestant can exhibit proper game play strategy?
Regardless, the champ was certainly deserving of victory today.

Right? Pick a state that isn't Texas.Golf wrote:Let's see now, ring in when the answer is a U.S. state and don't say a word. Truly brilliant. Give up a >2% chance to guess the right answer.

If I answered "Site R" to Final, would the government have made them edit it out?

Sure. Didn't that seem obvious to everybody at game speed? And in reality you could have also eliminated the states always used as well as Alaska and Hawaii.econgator wrote:Right? Alex's accent totally threw me off on Argo.
Great job Sarah! I held my breath for a second when you rang in on the last clue and risked your lock.
I was also at the academy, which I knew made zero sense, but I was stuck.

I thought Final was either Site R or Camp David. Didn't it have "mountain" in the clue? That eliminated the Naval Academy.

Congrats Sarah on your fifth win!
I ran "Word Puzzles" and "1970s #1 Hits"
Picked up Lach trash on "Illinois", "Minnesota" and "divan"
FJ was an instaget. I've been to Thurmont, Maryland, where Camp David is located.

Eh, you've also got to protect your lock so it should probably be treated as any other clue. Now, if she would have had $4k more it would have been silly.lisa0012 wrote:Alex's accent totally threw me off on Argo.

Camp David was the first answer that came to mind, based on the dates and mountain location. I was thrown a bit by the Naval part of the clue, but would have stuck with it as nothing else made sense.

I got FJ, but wasn't confident about it. (There were at least two FJs last week where the same thing happened to me.)
I missed Monday's FJ the previous two weeks, so it's nice to finally start a week on the right foot.
I know nothing about the history of Camp David, but was reasonably sure it was in Maryland, and I figure it counts as a "government site". I also considered the US Naval Academy, but figured that it was likely in its current location before the 1930s, whereas Camp David seemed to fit better with a 1930s planning or inception date.

Felt good playing along today. 5/5'd both the Word Puzzles and 1970s No. 1 Hits categories! The Eagles clue was boss.
I also 4/5'd the Animal Words category, though I choked on caballine. If only I remembered my high school Spanish and connected horse with "caballo."
Meanwhile, the DJ round was alright. Screwed up the $2000 clue in the literary category, but oh well. Got both Daily Double questions in the Lou Gehrig and Recent Movies categories.
The FJ was downright impossible though. No way I could have gotten that. Hopefully I'll get the FJ tomorrow.
Final results:
23/30 in the J! Round
22/30 in the DJ! Round
Good work, Sarah! Yer on a roll, keep it up!

Kings Speech. Bloody brilliant movie.

There was an Eagles clue? I thought they were Elton John, Jackson 5, Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head, Gloria Gaynor, and Wings.everestian wrote:Felt good playing along today. 5/5'd both the Word Puzzles and 1970s No. 1 Hits categories! The Eagles clue was boss.

I thought it was Eagles. Perhaps I'm confusing clues and thought of "spread eagle" instead of Wings. Either way, still got both of them right because I'm 99% sure I was able to read the clues off my TV screen.TenPoundHammer wrote:There was an Eagles clue?
