FJ was an instaget for me and I don’t know why, but I’m surprised so many people didn’t get it.
Did anyone notice Ken’s comment, something like “let’s see how much you wagered, or maybe you don’t believe in that”? That struck me as rather odd.

..."not a thing, didn't wager a penny, perhaps doesn't believe in it." In other words, David was holding on to his earnings because he'd already won the game by shutting out his opponents.

Re: Monday, September 26, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
To me, this FJ! equated to "Guess the random magazine that once featured Caroline Astor hosting a fancy party." So I picked Better Homes and Gardens. I see nothing in the clue pointing to Forbes.

Re: Monday, September 26, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Obviously it's the 400, but it's even more tenuous when you consider that the 400 people at the party were surely not the 400 richest, even only in NY. Many of them were probably just old money...
And Forbes doesn't host a party for them, afaik...
ADDENDUM
Back in the Gilded Age, an ambitious social climber and noted toady named Ward McAllister coined the phrase “the Four Hundred,” named for the number of people that Manhattan heiress Caroline Astor could fit in her Fifth Avenue ballroom. In 1982, Forbes magazine borrowed that same number for their annual “Forbes 400” list of the richest Americans.
https://paragonaccountingandtax.com/the ... different/
I wonder if the phrase was used in the HBO series, in which Astor and Ward McAllister are characters? I certainly don't recall...

Re: Monday, September 26, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Yeah I solved this after realizing that Astor was pointing to a gathering of rich people along with a number in the question. But that is a couple of tough leaps to make in 30 seconds and even if you do there is the trap to fall in of Fortune 500 vs Forbes 400.
Reading about it after the fact the clue seems even tougher, as they’re saying the Forbes 400 was “inspired” by the NYT doing this nearly 100 years earlier. If you knew Caroline Astor was from the gilded age, you could dismiss the right answer entirely if you’re assuming it’s a publication in existence at that time. The magazine’s founder, B.C. Forbes, father of Malcolm, was born in 1880!

Also, did saying McKinley instead Denali cost me $800?

Not sure why NYT is in there, but, yes, the word that implies continuity from Mrs. Astor's time is now-annual, as if the 400 was a direct inspiration rather than a metaphoric historical homage...jeff6286 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 27, 2022 12:15 pm

I knew exactly what that FJ was going for, but just couldn't pull the name Forbes. I ended up writing Barron's, but I was almost certain that was going to be wrong.

No dog in this hunt (buzzed in too late), but 'dermatologist' for 'allergist'?
Very upset no one tried "Swords for..."
Just 'Ticonderoga' would be acceptable for the pencils...but I'm not sure technically how you'd make that clarification. Using (Dixon) doesn't work because the contestant actually said Dixon... Am I overthinking this one?
Got it in well before the end of the year, Mark: viewtopic.php?p=377070#p377070
With 'Shoop' coming four clues earlier, 'sloop' was a gimme.

Modern Bride. I'm not gonna be right, so let's go for weird.

The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

I said Fortune. The Forbes 400 rings zero bells.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

The list was actually published by the NYT in 1892: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Four_ ... ilded_Age)davey wrote: ↑Tue Sep 27, 2022 3:12 pmNot sure why NYT is in there, but, yes, the word that implies continuity from Mrs. Astor's time is now-annual, as if the 400 was a direct inspiration rather than a metaphoric historical homage...jeff6286 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 27, 2022 12:15 pm

Thanks. Note that this is a list of the "fashionable," not a ranking of the rich. I'm sure there was a lot of overlap...jeff6286 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 27, 2022 8:19 pmThe list was actually published by the NYT in 1892: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Four_ ... ilded_Age)davey wrote: ↑Tue Sep 27, 2022 3:12 pmNot sure why NYT is in there, but, yes, the word that implies continuity from Mrs. Astor's time is now-annual, as if the 400 was a direct inspiration rather than a metaphoric historical homage...jeff6286 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 27, 2022 12:15 pm

I knew there was a place called Walla Walla in Washington but I've never seen it spelled out as "Walla Walla, WA" and that makes it seem even more fun.
Good DJ round for me which lead to a new personal best for Coryat, $46,000. Still lots of opportunities to learn new things.
I did not get FJ. I guessed Time magazine, probably thinking of their list of influential people, but I figured it would be wrong. I've gotten Fortune and Forbes mixed up on trivia questions. I think this clue will help me distinguish them.
