Jerry Samuels, who as “Napoleon XIV” wrote and recorded one of pop music’s most unusual hit singles, 1966’s “They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!,” died today (March 10, 2023). Samuels, 84, had operated a Philadelphia-based talent agency for the past four decades. News of his passing was shared by his wife, Bobbie Samuels, on her Facebook page. “My friends,” she wrote, “Jerry died early this morning. He was my rock and the greatest love of my life. He taught me to be strong.”

McCarver surprising to me as he was a well-known long time player as well as an announcer. Thought he could have made it just from being Steve Carlton's personal catcher late in his career. Melinda Dillon and Tom Sizemore very well known actors but Sizemore just didn't have a really good way to crack the archive. Thought Dillon might have from "A Christmas Story".

His one hit in the Archive was only just entered last December. I missed my chance to welcome him to the J-Canon.

I'm pretty sure that Audio Daily Double is where I first heard the song, back in the day.

Brian ‘Brizz’ Gillis, founding member of boy band LFO, at age 47.

LFO are best known for their 1999 hit "Summer Girls", with its famous line, "I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch". The group has only been asked about on Jeopardy once though, and it was a 2000 College Tournament clue about their song "Girl on TV", with its Jennifer Love Hewitt-starring video. At least as far as the regular show goes, "Summer Girls" is not J-Canon.

For trivia purposes, it's worth knowing that Brizz is the third member of the group to pass away. Rich Cronin died in 2010, Devon Lima in 2018. Only founding-member Brad Fischetti is still alive.

If Wikipedia is to be believed, the letters LFO stood for Lyte Funky Ones.
