As I'm sure you would want to know, we had a correction suggestion to the Archive recently alerting us that they officially have no "Las" in their name. Okay.

More of prurient interest, perhaps, than "likely to show up on Jeopardy!", but a terrible murder was committed outside Neuschwanstein Castle.

Just horrific. The victim was from Naperville, here in the Chicago suburbs.

It took 30, but IBM finally got toppled in the patent wars for one year

From 1993 to 2021, no other company received more US patents than the Armonk, New York–based tech giant. But in 2022, Samsung surpassed it, winning 6,248 patents. IBM, which placed second, received 4,398, according a ranking compiled by patent data platform IFI.

Another sports entry here: as was widely expected, French player Victor Wembanyama is the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, headed for the San Antonio Spurs. Wembanyama is described as a generational talent, mentioned along the likes of LeBron James.

This is the third time the Spurs have selected No. 1 overall; their previous two such selections, David Robinson (1987) and Tim Duncan (1997), have both been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Related, in April, Seacrest was replaced on Live by Kelly Ripa's husband, Mark Consuelos. Seacrest cited the travel between NY and LA as his reason for leaving.

Domingo Germán of the New York Yankees has pitched the 24th perfect game in Major League Baseball history, against the Oakland A's at Oakland Coliseum. It's the first perfect game since there were three pitched during the 2012 season, and it's the fourth perfect game by a Yankees pitcher (the most of any team).

Does that really count against the Oakland AAA's?

National Geographic fired everyone and is stopping print copies (unless you're subscribed)

National Geographic magazine will no longer be carried at newsstands beginning in 2024

Earlier this week, multiple employees at NatGeo reported that all remaining staff writers had been laid off. A total of 19 editorial members were cut, according to the Washington Post. They were given notice of the dismissals in April. NatGeo’s writing will now be outsourced to freelancers.

I did some work for them a few years ago. The collections people had in their offices were amazing. It is truly sad what has been happening to them (Nat Geo and their people).

What's a newsstand?...

I'm more personally concerned about the recent decimation at Turner Classic Movies - reportedly 70 of 90 employees fired.
Many of us still pine for the days when AMC was a commercial-free, classic movie channel, and find this news ominous...Though there has been an update in the last days that leaves a little room for hope-

Alumna Kristen Kish has been tapped to replace the departing Padma Lakshmi as the host of Bravo's Top Chef starting with season 21 in 2024. She won the show's 10th season in 2012, and has been serving as host for various other food-related programs in the interim, including co-hosting (with Alton Brown) Netflix's 2022 Iron Chef reboot.

Lakshmi stepped down in early June (just before the finale of season 20) to focus on her Hulu show Taste the Nation, books, and other pursuits. She had served as host of the show since season 2; the first season was hosted by Katie Lee.
