Wham! song is one thing, but not knowing the split of piano key colors? Wow, did not see that coming. I wonder if Ken could smell wood burning if any of contestants knew one of the numbers?

John, like Gus in the JNCC gets one game, but father might another one (or more) in the SCC for making Troy work hard again.

I matched Troy & John for the FJ! clue while also considering Emma's miss. It was not so much geography or history that helped me go the right way, but instead thinking to go with the most memorable name from elementary school lessons. It also sounded like the best name for an island.

This game is a draw for the Intermediate Form of Shore's Conjecture. The second-place player bet "small." --Bob

If I had a better handle on the category then I might have puzzled out 52.

Same with you on FJ. Santa Maria just sounded more likely.

The white piano keys is a clever question. I have never seen the information in the wild. I started to try to suss it out, but there is no quick algorithm. I started with "E is the lowest note" then realized, oops, that's on my 76 note keyboard. (the bottom note is A0 on a standard keyboard, top note is C8) Realizing my chance of dividing 88 by 12 and multiplying by 7 to get close might help. The obvious hack was to choose between 52 and 59. The arithmetic results in 51.3 to confirm the low option. I didn't consider using the category to solve it and certainly understand the triple stumper.

On FJ, I decided to pick a ship, and I knew that it was the flagship that he lost, but wrongly picked Pinta. Why didn't we learn it as the "Santa Maria, the Nin*a, and the Pinta"? It was always listed as the N, P, and SM in my grade school textbooks.

The accordion story will get you on the show . How are these games so competitive? When Troy started with the 1K clue, I thought he might have morphed to some James H strategy to build a grubstake from the bottom row where he probably wouldn't be outbuzzed. Nope, he went up and got DD1 with no leverage to take advantage of it. (He gained $200 I guess).

I'm stoked for tomorrow's game. I hope the categories are New England, Boston, College sports mascots, collectibles, NBA, and Philosophy. FJ will be Pizza :). Good luck threearuda.

That's what I did (correctly!) but I'm not sure the category as described rules out 55 as a potential answer.

Troy's neg with "basalmic" reminded me of Genevieve giving "balsam" for the lightweight wood in 2009.

I didn't parse the clue correctly. However, I learned through research of one of the TD games I put together that the Santa Maria ran aground on, of all days, Christmas.

Coryat: $43,400
52 R/0 W
DD: 2/3
FJ:
LT: 52, "Careless Whisper"; Moet et Chandon; green grasshopper, Catalan (DD)

There was only one correct wager on DD3. $8000 vs. $9000 might not seem like a big difference, but it was very nearly the margin between winning and losing.

It was only in the past year or so that I learned that Basque and Catalan were different languages. Relevant to the DD clue, Basque, like Korean, is not related to any other known language.

There was a discussion a week or two ago about showoff-y responses. I had two tonight with "Who is Kenny Gorelick?" and "Who is Erik Weisz?"

I actually got called in to audition for the part of an accordion-playing nun one time.

I think the green grasshopper TS surprised me the most, especially since the rest of the alliteration category received correct responses.

Troy seemed eager to avoid 12 Letters Or More for most of the DJ! round, and John was able to take advantage of that. Even ignoring his successful DD wager, John played a great game, and Emma getting out of the negatives after a failed DD seemed like a nice personal victory.

I am familiar with Venomous Creatures $1600...except the sting was on my thigh while trying to get into a friend's car. Better than a sting on the tongue, but still not a great time.

I wonder if, like me, he just didn't think that category was the most likely spot for a Daily Double. He may not have been veering away from it so much as veering toward spots he thought had a better chance.

trash: 52, green grasshopper, Catalan DD,

Probably the weirdest miss in a while. Didn't think of ships at all,
thought of small personal items that one might lose.
So I guessed the Bible :?

Same thought process here. Went with telescope after thinking about compass and hat.
