Re: Tuesday, March 14, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Stephen don't need no DDs to win. Jessica missed DD2 for all of her 3400 and then Long missed DD3 for his 12400 farm. Stephen needed that runaway with both opponents solving the FJ! clue.
With Stephen crossing out the correct response it's always possible that in a non-runaway and more money at risk he selects the right country by the time the 30 seconds are up. Lack of pressure can affect coin tosses in the FJ! round.
It was obvious before Long said the name where his LV pub trivia story was going.
I get why Mark Margolis will be clued in 2023 for his work on a certain TV series. I knew of him going back to The Equalizer. No, not Queen Latifah or Denzel versions, the Edward Woodward version when Margolis played Jimmy.
With Better Call Saul done I've enjoyed seeing Mark Margolis in the Showtime series Your Honor.
The FJ! clue was a fail for me and I can't blame coin toss since I never had the sense to consider the right place.
My thought was Kazakhstan was the largest landlocked so out. Great, too bad I did not know number two. With -stan in mind I wrote Afghanistan. 2nd largest? Empire? Uh... Thinking perhaps I had the wrong continent I went to Africa. After dismissing Sudan I wrote Chad.
If I only would have only concentrated more on the empire part I would like to think the dots would have been there to connect.
JBoard superchamp status for Stephen, but four more to go for Sarah & Buzzy's dignity level.
Long has good numbers on LL and other quizzing things while today it was not the best place for a DD with the word play stuff in DD time.

Yeah. Thanks to one quick clue re-read, I, opposite of Stephen, made the switch to the correct response.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 1:43 pm If I only would have only concentrated more on the empire part I would like to think the dots would have been there to connect.

Re: Tuesday, March 14, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I stuck around to watch this one as I have crossed internet-paths with Long before.
As I entered the WoF-studio-acting-as-a-green-room after my game, I saw him getting some final make-up touch ups before making his way to the Alex Trebek studio. I gave him a few insights on how the buzzer felt and told him I was confident he would do great.
I couldn't tell you how loud I and the rest of this week's contestants cheered when he had the guts to go all-in on DD3. It sucked to see it not work out for him. But he played to win, as he should, and should hold his head high.

Re: Tuesday, March 14, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The "empire" part and years in the clue made this FJ an instant get. But it also helped to remember that FJ clue from years ago that asked for the world's largest landlocked country, one contestant had Kazakhstan, and was counted wrong when the writers had Mongolia as the correct response.
I played quiz bowl against Stephen when he went to GA Tech and I went to FSU. It's great to see him reach super champ status!

Would have been nice to see A PLEASURE TO HAVE IN CLASS for $600 yesterday before I missed it in LearnedLeague.

Mongolia was instaget. I thought I was clever but then everyone got it? Except Mark Barrett.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

I just saw that on his LL profile.StevenH wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 7:03 pmHuh, I didn't know that about Long. But yes, Stephen is.OntarioQuizzer wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 2:34 pmWait, so both Stephen and Long are GA Tech quiz bowl alums?
His second best LL category is US History (67/70) so it surprises me he missed the DD as he ran the category otherwise. But anagrams can be tricky and studio lights don’t help.
I got FJ but wasn’t certain. Tough break for the challengers on missing the DDs.
Re: Tuesday, March 14, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The scrambled US History category was the first time I'd run an anagrams column, mainly because I knew these from the clue without having to even look at the anagrams. Was surprised at the DD miss since that one didn't seem more difficult than the others the player was getting correct.
Almost negged on FJ with Kazakhstan then realized they were asking for the SECOND largest landlocked country and assumed it had to be Mongolia. Got there in time thankfully, finished 42/61.
Question for my fellow boardies - I correctly guessed Breaking Bad for the Lord of the Dings $800 clue, but I have to wonder if they'd have accepted Better Call Saul as well. My guess is "first got our attention" precludes the latter show, but I'm not 100% certain the wording completely eliminates the possibility that both shows could be correct responses...

Re: Tuesday, March 14, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Tough call, right? Who's the "we" in "our attention"? Is it someone who watched Better Call Saul first? Where the character (chronologically) first received and used the bell?
Re: Tuesday, March 14, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The first three clues in that category had exact years, so when the DD clue came up I instinctively blurted out Missouri Compromise upon seeing 1820. Then realized it was the decade and not the year not to mention the letters did work and had to reevaluate. If a contestant does that on stage it's really rough to basically start over and get it done in time.

These Tuesday boards were more my speed — well, except for those darn CONTRONYMS
4/4 on the BCs
I’ve also crossed paths with Long and was sorry to see him come up short on NO CREDO FOR MERIT
