The thread from Raquel's Sports J! game: viewtopic.php?p=228653#p228653
Raquel: Well done to prevent the runaway and possibly get an invite to the SCC. Especially if Hannah racks up a longer streak with more locks. It was fun to watch the scoreboard as the DJ! Round wound down.
The FJ! clue had me match the challengers as quick as could be without needing to read the 2nd part of the clue.
Raquel had a possible 28800. Hannah needed to bet 2801 to cover it. On a miss that would be 23199. Raquel solved the FJ! and got up to 22400.
Peachbox has been around here more than long enough to know what's coming in later comments.

Re: Tuesday, May 9, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I had hoped to post before the comments came in, because I have known for more than 2 months there would be.....questions.
No, the $8,000 was not a "nice round wager." I have known about wagering strategy for years. That includes The Final Wager, and I feel like I owe a personal apology to Keith Williams.
I knew that if Hannah bet to cover me doubling up to $28,800, I needed to get above the amount she would drop to if she missed it. I started to figure it out with pen and paper, but must have reverted to calculating things in my head, like I'm so used to doing at home. And that's where I made the mistake. For some reason, my brain said "Right, $8,000." No, hon, $8,800 minimum
. I guess I wasn't thinking as clearly as I thought I was thinking. I didn't even realize what I had done until the end when Hannah's response was revealed. "Did I win? No, wait...oh ****."
As far as the second Daily Double, I just misread it. I remember thinking in those few seconds "Eisenhower...WWI...vaccine...well the flu was big then, so there wouldn't have been one for that." But of course it was saying in his experience in WWI, he helped treat troops for it (the flu). $8,000 swing there if I had read it right. I mis-parse clues sometimes at home, so I'm not surprised it happened for real, but too bad it was on that DD. And I still have no idea where Isthmus of Corinth came from.
I had a lot of fun. I stayed the rest of the day and cheered on my fellow contestants.

Re: Tuesday, May 9, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
We are all but mere mortals, and to err is human. Not to mention that there were only five Triple Stumpers in this game, the fewest in quite a while, I think. You put up a good fight, so I think you should be very proud of yourself, not to mention that you stand a good chance of coming back for the SCT! It'd be nuts if you, Roy, and morbeedo were all brought back and ended up in the same game...and I guess it'd also be proof that Davies lurks on JBoard.
First instaget in some time for me; I was very surprised to see Hannah's incorrect guess, partially because it was her first FJ miss. The low wager saved her for sure, so I suppose here's hoping that for Hannah to meet Ben Chan next Monday, there are no more pop culture FJs for the rest of the week?...MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue May 09, 2023 1:36 pm The FJ! clue had me match the challengers as quick as could be without needing to read the 2nd part of the clue.

Thanks, OrchidEntity. At least I flubbed it against a TOC player
Go Hannah!
And it would be fantastic if three boardies could make the SCC.

Yay, Peachbox!
Good game with the TDD achieved!
(A starling flew into our living room while the game was on, and we had to shoo it outside before our dog got hold of it, so we did miss a bit.

Fingers crossed!
Well played, Peachbox, I know the wrath of facing a ToC-bound player in their groove. Coming back from a DD miss is one of the hardest things to do, and you did so brilliantly! Welcome to the club.

Tough break, but you gave it a good shot.
I said Spanish flu for the DD. Judges?
Guessed Sigourney Weaver for FJ.

You played a great game on what I found to be a rather difficult set of boards, nothing to be ashamed of. I remember your SJ game and it was a joy to watch you again tonight!

Re: Tuesday, May 9, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Ah, rats
. At first I thought hannah shorted the cover wager and wound up lucking out with a miss. Then I got here and saw the betting lines again and realized it was a math malfunction. Geez, you just have to double a number, subtract a difference from another number, then just add (or is it subtract?) it from the smaller (or is it bigger?) number, then subtract the new number from your amount to get to the bet. What can go wrong?
Peachbox was great, and elevated the other player's games. I love it when second place snipes a victory with good betting on a double miss. I doubt if the majority of viewers (outside this ecosystem) even understand that a cover bet from second is not a good play, or that a suicide bet is terrible.
I had no idea on FJ, what with it being about movies, and in particular a genre I loathe.
I also am clueless about how Max Planck rhymes with lyricist. D'OH - Physicist.
(while I'm at it, the Planck constant is just the second of constants of nature sussed out by Max. The Boltzmann constant has much more Planck DNA than anyone else.)
. We want them in separate heats to meet in a final/play-in game/whatever
.

Missed the Bottom Three in Burt Bacharach. Not the questions I expected would come up.
DD: 3/3
FJ:
Good try Peachbox.
