Interesting that Gideon V Wainwright came up in the first game and Fay Wray came up in the second. Fay Wray's last credit was playing Gideon's landlady in "Gideon's Trumpet," starring Henry Fonda. She was almost the only woman in the movie.
And Henry Fonda's daughter also came up in the second game.

Sam is hilarious! #1 in our hearts.
Re: Masters Tuesday, May 9, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Game 1, Amy showing she has not worked on strategy as her FJ wager was not good and her DJ DD wager left much to be desired. Against this level of competition you just can't give away huge chunks of winning percentage.
Game 2, Matt's FJ wager will be discussed for some time. Immediately upon seeing it I uttered a few unprintable choice words related to cats and willows. But this is a multi-game total point affair, and his wager guaranteed 1 point minimum. I'm not saying I like it, but it might not be as bad as initially thought. I'll probably run the numbers in the next day or two on average number of points earned comparing this wager to the standard all in.
FJguy, I believe you need to double-check the game 2 DD3 info.

I think it's tragic that the Museum of Broken Relationships isn't in Split, Croatia.

Re: Masters Tuesday, May 9, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
That had to be the one combo where Hickey's play goes TS? The Hogan's Heroes clue I could see causing the problem it did, but the play title?
There was no doubt that when Sam called Ken, KJ, that Ken would come back with SB.
The FJ! clue had me pleased to figure it out. Currency to country. Author? Oh, that guy. Name? Dug it up with time to spare.
*********
Before the game began I enjoyed the shot of the guys at the museum looking at the Emmys in the display case.
RHYMINGLY NAMED CELEBS did not have a two-name requirement to it, so it was a funny moment when the nickname was enough for the NBA guy.
Ken's quip about the gentlemen even knowing Reese's coffee order was funny.
None chance for me on the FJ! clue as I did not even know which continent might have the place.
There was no doubt whatsoever that James was going to be it all. It worked out well for Matt to get 3 points with the lower wager and ouch for James walking away with 0 on a crossout going the wrong way. Andrew (quite pedestrian when he doesn't play DDs) got run over and still escaped with a point.
The DD placement for the DJ! round was nasty with nothing in LITERATURE and I did not mind knowing where DD2 & DD3 were hiding as the guys tried to hunt them down.
Time will tell if the material gets harder as the games go along. Each player has settled in and played twice to get the feel for coming back.

Re: Masters Tuesday, May 9, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I was shocked at first to see the low wager from Matt but thinking about it more, maybe he figures he's unlikely to beat James on FJ (James was 97% on FJ in his original run) or on a tiebreaker buzz, (James was 56% on the buzzer to Matt's 33% in this game.) So maybe roll the dice and hope this is a brutal FJ and he can win it that way. It's a bold move and could have easily backfired but on this occasion it worked out for him.Golf wrote: ↑Tue May 09, 2023 11:22 pm Game 1, Amy showing she has not worked on strategy as her FJ wager was not good and her DJ DD wager left much to be desired. Interestingly this is the second time James has missed FJ by crossing out the correct response. It also happened in the TOC SF: https://j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6465
With little knowledge of anything being referenced here I managed to stumble into the right answer, mostly on the way Ken pronounced "Sam" in the name of the Haitian President, it occurred to me that it sounded a bit more French than Spanish and maybe Haiti was the way to go.
On the other FJ I'm curious if Sam had the right person in mind but couldn't get all the syllables in his name lined up. JOHANNSON STIEGLER contains most of STIEG LARSSON it's just been thrown in a blender.
Overall, great work by Matt and Mattea, each coming back from a rough opening game to earn a well-deserved win. Sam is now the one most desperate for a win and he's got James and Amy up next, no easy task.
I have plenty of quibbles with this tournament as far as the format and who was chosen but the games have certainly been fun to watch!

Yeah, I was gonna say.... She also demonstrated no serious grasp of her opponents' wagering history. Did she really believe Sam might wager zero in that situation? I would expect to see James wager less than 800 in that spot.Golf wrote: Game 1, Amy showing she has not worked on strategy as her FJ wager was not good
Mattea is my least favorite of the tournament, but at least she knew how to wager.

Re: Masters Tuesday, May 9, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I miss the reverent silence going into Final.
Instead, the audience has been instructed to applaud, or canned applause has been inserted in post.
Also, TIL George Plympton and George Plimpton were different people. And that Bobby Jones and Robert Trent Jones were different people.
IANAL--well, not a trial one, anyway--but I didn't like the clue "You can ask for one of these if you wish to delay a trial, but it can also refer to just going on with the trial". It would be way confusing to use the jargon word "continuance" to mean anything other than temporary stoppage of proceedings.
It's interesting what makes a difference in a game and what doesn't. James's confusing Rembrandt and Van Gogh for a 4,000 point swing had no effect on the outcome for him whatsoever.

In the wacky spirit of these games, can we note that Andrew had "stew" crossed out as part of his response and made a "stirring the pot" gesture upon the reveal?

Re: Masters Tuesday, May 9, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The format of this tourney certainly affects the calculus. We've got to figure Matt thought it was worth the small wager because he knew he'd at least get one point and possibly three with a miss by James. To make it to the semis you've just got to beat out two players, after all. Avoiding goose eggs is important.jeff6286 wrote: ↑Wed May 10, 2023 3:22 amI was shocked at first to see the low wager from Matt but thinking about it more, maybe he figures he's unlikely to beat James on FJ (James was 97% on FJ in his original run) or on a tiebreaker buzz, (James was 56% on the buzzer to Matt's 33% in this game.) Each player plays seven games in the quarterfinals, right? There are four points available in each game. Figure you're pretty safe if you can at least get the average number of points per game (1 1/3), so that's 9 1/3 over seven. Nine points might get you to semis, but 10 is safer. I guess we'll see where the cut ends up.
