You think you squeaked through? I don't think I've ever done worse in an LLRC than I did in this year's, but one lesson I've learned is to make sure your moneys are correct, even if you have to choose obvious answers. Of course, making the cut means showing the world my pathetic showing in Round 3....

That one was a WAG for me as well and I was shocked it was correct.

Drat, it was ammonia, not fertilizer.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Bizarro update for first full cycle.

mahatma continues his mastery of stank with MD9 assigning me a three pointer for Vicksburg. Great decision to avoid the risk with Forrest Gump 94 percenter . I've missed easier ones of that ilk. It took two readings for me to even figure out what Thorsten wanted with the Civil War question, but after a quick discard of New Orleans (thanks to Johnny Horton (in 1814...)), it was a confident guess.

We only had one 3(1) sighting this cycle.
Round 2 coming up with MD10-MD17.

Looks like I have some competition from No. 1 Sis, although I would never refer to a lady with the word ‘stank’.

Belated congratulations to those boardies who participated in this year's LLRC, which I at least found significantly more difficult than in years past. On the leaderboard, we have my OQL teammates teapot37 in 18th and BigDaddyMatty in 26th, Seaborgium in 73rd, jeff6286 in 209th, mahatma in 232nd, ElendilPickle in 268th, This is Kirk! in 308th and my OQL captain reddpen in 315th. Well done, all! Apologies if I've left off anyone's name from this list.

Congratulations!!!

I got three (1,7,9) right the first day and one (9) the second day. Which explains why I’m 24/26 in my D rundle right now.
Thanks!

If you look at the results there are people who made it to the championship who did worse than you did. I mean, sure, there is definitely added stress playing in a proctored setting with a time limit, but there are some very dubious scores.
There are so many things that can influence this. Obviously, the format itself. But one person may be able to play in a quiet room, in the middle of the day, with no distractions. Another may have to sit at the kitchen table while TVs are playing, kids are fighting bed time, and spouses are glaring at the back of their head.
LLRC competitors get to choose when their session takes place, so I'd guess distractions this severe are quite rare. Now that 2013 WQC test bomtr and I took in Redmond, WA in a library full of noisy children: that was hella distracting. But we didn't choose the time or the place.
Sometimes the obvious explanation is correct.

Seconding the congrats, Kirk: making the cut is a great feeling.
Also nice to see you enjoyed Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher so much. The librarian (Harriet Leitch) who rediscovered and corresponded extensively with Curtis from 1948-52 was my great great aunt's longtime companion.

I posted not terribly long ago in the "new old games" thread how I've got Gilbert and Sullivan straight for what they contributed (W.S. Gilbert wrote the words), but not Rodgers and Hammerstein. And I got bitten again. (Both my opponents saved me a loss of points for it, I'm glad to say.) But afterwards, I realized Oscar Hammerstein's initials spell a word, so that's what I'll remember now.

My opponent’s two worst subjects are pop music and theater so of course he earned five points there yesterday. Sports was his fourth best so he missed his zero points question.

I totally forgot what my reply was as well, but deduced that since Rogers has an EGOT and Hammerstein doesn't, Rogers must have been the music guy.

Different proctors take different approaches to scheduling. Some just ask you to suggest a time that works; others (like mine this year) offer a limited menu of time slots. I could have pushed back to find a better (quieter) time, but decided to just roll with it.

How does it work? Does each finalist get paired with a proctor and you have to work out a time together? Or does a proctor post times he is available and a finalist signs up for a certain time slot?

Are you not allowed to be paired with someone you know in real life? (Obviously, honor code would apply here). Does Thorsten have access to a recording (I assume this is done via video chat) of the session in case someone accused a pairing of some shenanigans?

Thorsten assigns you a proctor who then contacts you. You then jointly schedule a time that’s mutually agreeable.

I actually had mine initially scheduled during the time of the Blue Angels Seafair show and asked my proctor to move it because of that distraction.

Wow, that's cool. I've been on a bit of a Native American reading spree for the last few weeks. I read Killers of the Flower Moon prior to the Edward Curtis book and now I'm reading Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese.

I didn't remember which one was EGOT. I knew one of them died before The Sound of Music became a movie because the other had sole credit for the new songs the film had ("I Have Confidence" and "Something Good"), but I just didn't have them associated with their roles in their partnership.

Who got Fibber McGee based on this?

https://wnyxnewsradio.fandom.com/wiki/Xmas_Story

Truly my favorite episode of the show. Phil Hartman was just great as Bill McNeil. This episode is dark, but I've always found it humorous. The interesting part. It never occurred to me that "Fibber McGee and Molly" was actually real, but other than "Mike and Molly" I didn't have a better guess, and Newsradio was on NBC. The clue puts it as a NBC radio show. I figured, what the heck.
