I first learned the radio names from hearing about a stuffed closet on the program.
My picks are in for the Saturday classic.
Re: LearnedLeague 98 (LL98) Thread
I like Wings, and NewsRadio comes on right after it, which I sometimes watch for awhile while waiting for Mrs. alietr to join me for the news. I just don't get the Phil Hartman adulation; I think he's the least funny one on there. And Joe Rogan, who wasn't very good in it, just gives me the creeps knowing what became of him.Sherm wrote: ↑Sat Sep 16, 2023 9:58 am Who got Fibber McGee based on this?

Truly my favorite episode of the show. Phil Hartman was just great as Bill McNeil. This episode is dark, but I've always found it humorous. The interesting part. It never occurred to me that "Fibber McGee and Molly" was actually real, but other than "Mike and Molly" I didn't have a better guess, and Newsradio was on NBC. The clue puts it as a NBC radio show. I figured, what the heck.
What? There's a Saturday one, too?!?

Re: LearnedLeague 98 (LL98) Thread
I spent all of LL97 in the relegation zone in a disaster of a season in "C"...and now, I'm stuck in relegation zone in "D"; it appears I'm headed to "E" next season. I can't go any lower.
One bright spot: I'm tied for 3rd in MCW in Foundry league.

Re: LearnedLeague 98 (LL98) Thread
We view it differently. I don't know that I find Bill McNeil all that funny either. Thats not what it is always about. What I see in him is the same thing I see in Michael Scott, Louie DePalma or Dan Fielding. He's a complete idiot. A jerk that rarely thinks of others in anything he does. He's very unlikable.
So how come I don't hate him and I feel bad for him when something bad happens to him? It takes some serious acting to pull that off. If you hate that character, then you don't see the job Phil Hartman was doing that I do. If you actually like the character in any way, its speaks volumes of the job the actor is doing.
There is a reason he got nominated for an emmy for that role. Though I think its fair that he wasn't as good at it as Steve Carell, Danny Devito or John Larroquette.

I did comically bad on the Midseason Classic. Holy crap. This has not been a great season for me.
Re: LearnedLeague 98 (LL98) Thread
Got to admit, I checked to see what you considered 'comically bad' (I was figuring like 300 or so), but yeah, that was not your question set. That was almost my exact score back in LL 92.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 3:52 pm I did comically bad on the Midseason Classic. Holy crap. This has not been a great season for me.

I've had a lot of good WAGS this season but got too clever yesterday. I figured that oval would be a common cricket grounds shape and that a featured name would be a round one. Round is also the "ideal" shape, at least according to this bias confirming citation i found:
I also knee jerked Albert Schweitzer as a pianist without thinking it out. Keyboards is keyboards, lol...
I loved the Euler's number question but can see how it looked intimidating to non-math nerds. It was very accessible and had to be rewarding to get for the mathaphobes.
I'm temporarily in 4th place, the promotion zone to go to C, where I've served a couple of seasons as the whipping boy. We start rematches tomorrow (only 20 in the rundle), and I'm 3-3 against the scheduled opponents.
Tank rundle will finish the second round today. It's been tough to give 3's lately, sort of like herding cats. To borrow a phrase, Oh, those darn E-rundlans
.
Spoiler
What is cricket pitch shape?

A circular cricket field is considered as the perfect field but generally a cricket pitch is slightly oval. Its diameter varies between 137m and 150m.

Yeah, I've had a hard time giving away 3s lately also. I'm like the guy trying to give away popcorn balls or pennies on Halloween.twelvefootboy wrote: ↑Thu Sep 21, 2023 10:18 am I've had a lot of good WAGS this season but got too clever yesterday. FWIW, I answered 'keyboards' for the organ question, and got credit. With that and 'okiyoi', the Commish has been very easy on me.

I'm sorry. I can't talk about an active match day. I'll have to remind you tomorrow.ouachiouat wrote: ↑Thu Sep 21, 2023 11:32 am I answered today's questions already, which means as long as I remember to answer tomorrow I'll hit 500 matches without a forfeit! Someone please remind me.....

Thanks folks! That helped, and no spoilers here about grabbing a beer or leaving emptyhanded. I submitted, so yay 500! Now the march on to 1K.

So, heading into the final days of LL98, I'm making a run at the Dawkins award in Foundry.
This is the first time I've been on the leaderboard. If I take the Dawkins, will my cash award be enough for me to retire?

Wish there was a CAA trophy...
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

As threatened earlier, here iz the goods from the Tanks for Nothing rundle. Our perpetual champ mahatma ran into dufus buzz saws. He may be a dolphin after all
. Perfect assignments of Indiana, vinegar, and aqualung should all have hit wheelhouses. But this Baby boomer, 1971 High School graduate (not bragging here, I really did), Scuba Diver, Guitar player did not even know there was a song named Aqualung. Alexa played it for me and the riff sounds familiar. Sorry, friend
.
Julie Andrews trapped four of us. AFRET also ran into the buzz saw that was Mary Poppins
.
Second round results (MD10-MD18):
Season totals - there's a new Dog in charge!
7 MD's left, plenty of time to catch up. Anon boardie seems to have joined the fray, whoever you are
.
eta- column showing 3 pointers received, i.e. most difficult targets, lol..

I DNRTFQ a couple of times in this round. Julie Andrews got me, and then I blew right past the year and the town, and answered Valli instead of Sinatra. So there's plenty of doofusing going around.

I wish I had misspelled doofus ironically, but alas...

(I find a citation as an "alternate" spelling, but it's a bit self-referential IMHO)

I notched another 4 MCW on MD20, and have now taken the lead in the Dawkins race in Foundry.
