Season 40 Preemptions

Post by gameshowfandanny »

Today’s season premiere will be preempted on any ABC affiliate that gets Jeopardy! at 7:30 PM Eastern or later by Monday Night Football or its pregame show.

ABC will be airing NFL games every Monday for the remainder of 2023, as well as a Wild Card game on January 15, 2024.

This will also be the case next Monday, September 18. A week after that, those markets are affected again, along with the nine 7:00 pm Eastern ABC locations, including New York & Philadelphia. (The Week 3 MNF game, Eagles-Buccaneers, starts at 7:15 ET, an hour earlier than the others.)

Here is a Twitter thread by me detailing the effects on J! tonight. Four markets don't show it at all, one moves it up half an hour, one moves it to another station, eight push it to late night (after late local news + Kimmel + Nightline), and fourteen in the Mountain/Pacific/Alaska time zones will air it mid-evening.

It is quite possible some local markets may pre-empt it today if they are running a special program related to 9/11.

Per Variety, ABC will simulcast ESPN's telecasts of Monday Night Football for the entire season, not just the weeks [previously] noted at the top of this post.

Tonight, Monday, Sept 25th, the Monday Night Football on WABC Channel 7 in NYC will be starting at 7pm, displacing Jeopardy!.
Perhaps they will show the episode in the overnight slot or on ABC localish on Channel 110 on Optimum.
I haven't found anything about the per-emption on the WABC 7 website yet.

WABC-TV Channel 7 noted at the start of the football coverage that tonight's Jeopardy! would be shown sometime overnight tonight. My DVR looks for new episodes of Jeopardy! and has already set up to tape Jeopardy! at 2:05am. But, in the past, the starting time of TV shows overnight are often different from the published schedule.

yeah this preempt is going to be real annoying definitely it seems that it is not labelled sometimes in the guide (granted I could do a lot of this an auto pilot). and I thought we got rid of those "rowdy friends" during most of the season. (I can deal with adjustment every once in a while but this is going to be a pain) this is not even consistent. sometimes they block some of the first block (they usually put one show but not the other) this week they blocked everything. it was chaos thank goodness I had the smartness to put it on 2 hours because they played a rerun of jeopardy then the news. (I skipped a hell a lot) then the current episode then wheel. (though at least the rerun begin on time for once) it seem to have been morning by the time they were done. (weirdly enough I started doing this the moment after I deleted it from my DVR but there was some morning news thing at the end of wheel so at least 4am based on my memorization of day parting reading Wikipedia) this is really annoying considering this whole thing led to me not having the whole channel for 2 weeks (thank you everyone with the digital antenna by the way) because they want to deal with football rights and now the football right so making Jeopardy go chaos.

granted this has inspired me to make a written guide to weird recording since this seems to be a almost weekly issue now.

so here is Game Girl's Guide to dealing with pesky recordings (which I decide to make a separate post because it is just easier.)

.daytime means daytime jeopardy

this is for digital not VHS, VHS from what I use time codes and signals. all of this overwriting weirdness is probably not going to be a problem to be careful like I said preempt happen Nighttime week schedules (weekends are more accurate for ABC only worry about the red carpet and midnight which goes 5 to 7 minutes overtime sometimes, wipeout fan) are not kind to true to hour programming.

you prepare for the worst, in terms of estimating how close it will be in the correct time, definitely with unfamiliar scenarios like the complete annihilation of prime access. try to choose a very solid program (I assume this depends on the affiliate but if there was a program that is always playing on Monday that is nearest to where they usually put the rerun when preempts happen. (for some reason this my station did not say "will be airing at this hour" but in the past they did) I choose daytime but for those that actually put daytime in daytime probably Kelly and Ryan (now Mark) should be solid assume probably somewhere between 230 and 335 it will begin.

you should probably not do a Recording on the slot that has the program (including daytime) even if you know (unless you see on your cable provider that they did update it already and you feel confident enough that they will not ding). you do this because sometimes it overrides if the program does not exist. (like if the press your luck gets overwritten by the Queen's tribute. even if you wanted to watch the queen's tribute the next day it just disappeared.) if you curious about how that piece of obscure knowledge came about.

granted there is obviously the caveat of some DVR's valuing program timing instead of slots. obviously my style value slots since that's how my DVR works. there is nothing that would value a one hour program more than a three hour program. (granted there is a I am not sure if it is on purpose or bug but over 3 hours and 10 min it will glitch, if yours does that you be careful if you choose your 'pre program' too long you should not shoot 2 hours if you programs longer than 1 hour unless you already know what yours does)

weirdly enough I got this idea from a tape trading website that was talking about how they recorded the whole slot of Saturday morning about a month after I first got my DVR and it came to my head that wait a minute primetime ends 2 hours after 1 hour recording and the rest is history. sometimes you do not want a long skipping bar either. I would usually do a 1 hour if I kind knew the slot for wheel. Kelly and Ryan seem to always go for on my affiliate but that should probably not be a problem for every affiliate. each place probably has their own set of values in terms of which programs they cherish.

I hope this somewhat lengthy guide can help some that might be either newer or not familiar with the nighttime recording environment. I went and did a 1 hour over recording once from the daytime slot (since like I said they used to list the time) and I did not even get any of wheel because Kelly and Ryan went over I just got jeopardy (they just reveal the champion and then it cut off) if I did not overshoot to try to get wheel I would have got none of jeopardy. so I decided to give this so I made the mistake you do not have to make the mistake yourself. (not to mention last night was professional chaos time and not really the environment for learning how to circumvent the DVR)

The quality of the recordings vary widely, but you can usually each day’s game on YouTube by midafternoon. They are usually taken down within a day or two.

Just be prepared for possible spoilers in a comment you can’t avoid seeing. Or things in the video like audio disappearing, segments missing, weird camera shifting, or someone at the end speaking (praying?) in a foreign language. The video postings violate copyright law so take what you can get.

The day after thanksgiving seems to be preempted, I would suggest getting if you use ABC , "Live with Kelly and Mark" 2 hours ahead on recording just in case you might forget the day after Thanksgiving during Black Friday. (or driving back from family either way) rather than wait for it it to pop-up officially with the correct title which could be on Thanksgiving. (according to the math I did on mine it seems that it should not go over the 3 hour mark but check your listings and remember how your DVR works to avoid getting bugs on yours.)

You're definitely going to want to check your local listings. Here's what I came up with as far as programming that will impact Jeopardy! airings. All times Eastern except as noted under NBC.

ABC
Thursday, Nov. 23: No impacts.
Friday, Nov. 24: All affiliates impacted (three college football games from noon to 11:00 pm, with highlights shows between them).

CBS
Thursday, Nov. 23: Pregame show and Commanders at Cowboys from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.
Friday, Nov. 24: All affiliates from noon to 7:30 pm impacted (two college football games, with highlights show between them; 7:30 Eastern markers could get hit if the second runs long or if stations decide to go to local news until 8:00).

Fox
Thursday, Nov. 23: All affiliates except Denver impacted, (two college basketball games from 4:00 to 8:00 pm; even KDVR could get hit if the second one runs long)
Friday, Nov. 24: All affiliates impacted (two college football games and two college basketball games from noon to midnight, with highlights show between them).

NBC
Thursday, Nov. 23: National Dog Show and rerun of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade from 12:00 to 5:00 pm, in all time zones. Pregame show and 49ers at Seahawks, 8:00 to 11:30 pm Eastern.
Friday, Nov. 24: Pregame show and Penn State at Michigan State, 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

Thursday, November 30: WPVI in Philadelphia will air the episode at 2:36 AM due to coverage of a holiday tree lighting in the 7:00 PM hour.

Friday, December 1: ABC broadcasts the Pac-12 Football Championship Game, scheduled for 8:00-11:30 PM Eastern. Mountain, Pacific, and Alaska markets with J! on that network will be affected. (No pregame show, so the Eastern Time Zone is in the clear.)

Any guess how the coverage for Rosalynn Carter's services will affect things in the mornings coming up?

Due to heavy snow in western New York State, the Steelers-Bills AFC wild card game originally scheduled for 1 pm Eastern Time tomorrow has been moved to 4:30 pm ET on Monday afternoon.

This will pre-empt Jeopardy! in 56 media markets where the show airs on CBS, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Boston, Tampa, and Cleveland.

These pre-emptions are in addition to those already in place for ABC markets airing Jeopardy! at 7:30 pm ET or later due to Eagles-Buccaneers.

Fox has PBA then Emmys following college hoops for a triple header of special programming on MLK Monday.

This will pre-empt Jeopardy! in ... Cleveland.
Says WOIO:
We're going to try to move it to 1:37AM immediately following COMICS UNLEASHED on Monday. Stay tuned to our newscasts on Monday for further updates.

In the DFW market this season J! moved back to the main CBS station from an affiliate channel where it had been for several years. In the past in situations like this J! simply moves to the affiliate at the usual time.

Not guaranteeing anything but it wouldn’t surprise me if J! aired Monday at 6pm on KTXA-21.
