It's that time. Remember, absolutely no discussion while questions are active.

A friendly reminder that “no discussion” means more than just giving the answers. It also means refrain from saying things like “they were hard today” or saying how many you got right.

Yup. Now we've got to learn a whole half new crew of players. Also, looks like wardr has ronined into our midst for a season. That should be fun.

Indeed. I wouldn't have gotten it before the UAW strike.

"What is the name (or abbreviation) of the unit for measuring heat in which the temperature of one pound of water is raised by one degree Fahrenheit"
now that one is going to hurt me forever. I guess it is my fault for doing it too late but I want to get the ball rolling for the first day. if this was another day I would have thought deeper or so. I thought you were able to edit it and it was more of a saver feature.

my science teacher would be disappointed but I did know it was something per unit. I will be clear I have never heard of this British blah blah blah. (not against British measuring systems but I thought we were going with general units of measurement) The next day I looked at my reference table in my science notes and the table I got says kilojoules is the measurement for boiling water on the front cover. I got that wrong and put kelvin since it has been quite a while since that class in which the notes came from but I feel they should have been a few other answer.

The problem is that kilojoules are an SI derived unit. It doesn't fit the description because a BTU uses Imperial units such as pounds and degrees F and kilojoules do not. So no, BTU is the only answer that should be accepted because the wording given is the specific definition of one BTU.

I got off to a good start by getting the first question of the season right but it went downhill from there as I lost 4(2)-5(3).

I nearly really screwed up earlier by almost commenting on a question from next week I played early. 😮

This is actually an advanced level science question which is indicated by the 30% get rate and 25% MCWA of "calorie". Some of the gets may be through clever guessing from thinking about furnaces or air conditioning and wondering what that whole BTU thingie is about, so it's not a YEKIOYD. I considered Btuh (Btu per hour) which is the actual unit for HVAC purposes) but knew it was wrong.

Congrats on your first day and avoiding the bagel. Just don't overthink answers that seem too obvious. They are not to everybody. Thorsten constructs questions to help you every way possible, and never to lead you astray. (Well, after the strongman clue for the Jackson 5, I'm not so sure ;)) He's also very generous in scoring so be sure to take your shots. I turned ultramarine (whatever that is) into aquamarine and took the long shot that someone might actually listen to Blue Man Group soundtracks and landed a good WAG. btw- I've seen them in Vegas and it is very cool. as background music, well...

Two days into my first venture in the A rundle, and it has proven what I already knew to be true.

I'll do better once I kicked back into the "B" rundle that I belong in.

The killer is that I've been happy with my own performance. I've gotten 9 questions correct, and I am in absolute last place. Defense doesn't matter so much when the other guy doesn't miss all that often.

This reminds me of a recent-ish conversation I had with my wife (also a scientist) about the distinction between kWh (energy) and kW (power). It did not go well.

I get trivia nerds aren’t always big sports fans, but 19% guessing Jackie Robinson was pitching for the Indians in 1948 after a 22 year career in the Negro Leagues seemed a bit high. The get rate for the most famous Negro League pitcher was lower than I expected as well.

Another way of saying I’m mad I assigned zero and they missed it. Also surprised I got one point for it. (My zero was Salesman and I got it).

At least I got my first win of the season.

I was shocked at the low get rates for the HRE and fellow traveler. Both of those I considered WECIB kinda questions (though I was troubled by the thought that Sputnik means fellow traveler).

We have a Josh Dobbs / Brock Purdy *
Spoiler
(for non-NFL fanboys, these are two former 3rd string QB's that are lighting it up, albeit the sample size is still small)
phenom upstart in Waterfront B! Congrats to AfretCMS for being in first place!
The Sixteen Tons question is pretty much a Baby Boomer filter, but maybe with a rural/urban aspect as well.
The Pygmalion question might as well have been "what was the name of the My Fair Lady predecessor?". I knew the two were linked, but not that it was a play, then a film, then a musical (another play). The question was classified as "film", but this is two Theater questions in one day IMHO  .
I answered "useful idiot" for the fellow traveler. In the US, I think that "pinko commie" and (vulgar alert)
Spoiler
"pinko fag"
were more epithetical. (wow, that is a word?)
I still haven't figured out the "strongman" bait and switch on the Jackson 5 question, but I wouldn't have gotten it anyway.
