I still haven't figured out the "strongman" bait and switch on the Jackson 5 question, but I wouldn't have gotten it anyway.
Another 'useful idiot' here. And I would've bet on that too...I get called it all the time

Not a bait and switch, it's referring to authoritarian Yugoslav President (amongst other titles) Tito.
E.g., political strongman, not weightlifter.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

I was among the 24% who went for Prussia, in my case based entirely off Frederick plus kidding myself that Hohenzollern = Hohenstauffen.

For fellow traveler, I put fifth column(ist) and really thought I had it. Still managed my first win of the season as my Canadian opp knew neither Tennessee Ernie Ford (my mom used to play the 78 for us) nor Satchel Paige.

Tough set with just one Q topping 43%.

Thanks, but it's still early. However, now that you've mentioned it, I can pretend to be superstitious and blame you for jinxing it when I revert to the mean and the downhill slide begins.

There was one question with higher than 43% correct...and I got it wrong.

"Fellow traveler" didn't even bring a hint of recognition when I revealed the answers yesterday. I don't recall ever seeing that phrase before yesterday.

I also missed HRE with Prussia. What do you think made HRE a WECIB? I figured I knew with certainty that there were two Prussian kings named Frederick, with one of them being arguably one of the most famous historical figures ever, so it seemed like a pretty good guess.

19% putting Jackie Robinson for Q3 is a bit shocking, I'll admit. I'm guessing a very high percentage of those put down the one negro leagues player they could name. I would have thought Old Satch was pretty well-known, though.

am I the only one who noticed that all but one of the questions took place within the same decade (1940s to 1955) yesterday. I wonder what is up (did he is the same site or Book, did he just go by year on Wikipedia for inspiration which is nothing to be ashamed of, just curious).
Woof wrote: Fri Nov 17, 2023 9:30 am I was shocked at the low get rates for the HRE and fellow traveler. Both of those I considered WECIB kinda questions (though I was troubled by the thought that Sputnik means fellow traveler).
I considered blacklisted, I put red scare. I have heard had quite a number of term but never a fellow traveller. when's that came to mind that I knew even before reading that were maybe sympathiser (I know it is misspelled voice dictation is not getting it but 'commiy') and a traitor. it was around there they decided just to put the above seeing of where my train of thought it was going. (usually you will be shunned or worse before there's that many terms to be said) I thought of a Andy Griffin show episode, life (which no one dared to give any suggestions verbally), and anything I could think of as reference. at least I did not spend too much time on this. (I think I spent more time making this post then actually going through thoses) granted I know when I was doing this question I was thinking I never thought I would be doing inserting slang of the 1950s when I signed up for this.

I really wonder where Thorton got this, I do not think this was as circulated a term as he might think. (which makes sense for obscure trivia but still) and it does not help that basically all the questions occurred in the same era giving more of a chance that it was really one source. I mean this as polite criticism. it's really hard to put tone the voice in text but I actually wonder where is source for this. but granted what everyone else has said on this board I think everyone was going the insultment route. still I have been having a good time.

still for some of these questions in general I wish they were less 'wordy' (in a common core way) is starting to give me a migraine which I find is the only downside of this. (how anyone else deals with this or if anyone else is having migraines I would love some ideas.)

edit - I realise that headache also has an expression meaning of being annoyed which kind of understand if someone was confused with some of the above though not where I was going. when I said headache I meant it like I said below an actual physical headache most likely due to the print size within a length of text that I was not able to use the reader feature (The one that makes the print bigger) for and requiring multiple reads. the request was more if anyone had good headache remedies if they experience that problem. sorry if there was any confusion.

I have a feeling that most of the questions coming from the same ~20 year period yesterday was just a coincidence, although there have been a few examples where the day's questions do have a common theme--at least to some extent.

I was surprised that Ranger was the answer, since I put Surveyor. Surveyor was accepted post hoc, however.

I also had Surveyor. After looking up the Wikipedia after submitting I was fairly confident it would be accepted. Certainly Ranger fits the question a bit better, but there's really nothing in the wording that precludes Surveyor, either.

I'm on a bit of a lucky tear to open the season with five wins and a DE over .900. It won't last, of course, but I'll take it!

Thanks for the translation. Still seems bait and switchy for this useful idiot ;).
Q1. POP MUSIC - The name of what strongman completes a list that also includes Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael?

I'll remember to mutate any sports references to political leaders with names shared with musicians  . Not Thorsten's best clue to start the season but it hit the perfect 50% get rate including all the twelvefootclan but me :).

Change the number to .875 and I could have written this comment also. Especially since I was steeling myself for a loss in MD5 due to Ranger. My career DE is .655 so I'm a little surprised by the first week.

I'm temporarily in first today as well with a 4-0-1 record and a blazing 0.632 DE. My TCA of 15 is tied for fifth and the CAA of 9 is the easiest schedule in my D rundle. We only have 22 players so I will have rematches with the same players the last four days of the season. I'm expecting gravity to kick in soon, just like when the Coyote runs off the cliff.

Coyote always came back from that. Now...when the Coyote runs into a Zaslav...

I also missed HRE with Prussia. What do you think made HRE a WECIB? I figured I knew with certainty that there were two Prussian kings named Frederick, with one of them being arguably one of the most famous historical figures ever, so it seemed like a pretty good guess.
Well, even if Frederick I (Barbarossa) doesn’t suggest HRE, can you really think that a Prussian monarch would call himself Henry VI and not Heinrich? To me, it strongly suggested a transnational empire.

Aren't the Fredericks technically Friedrichs, though? I figured they were all Anglicized names.

You're really grasping here. Plenty of Kings are known commonly to us English speakers by Anglicized names, it would be unreasonable to think Thorsten couldn't list a Prussian King Henry (rather than Heinrich). See the English language wiki pages linked below:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_He ... 80%931802)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_He ... 80%931929)

Simiarly, French Kings are often listed as Henry rather than Henri, also John rather than Jean. I'm sure there are countless more examples.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_IV_of_France
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_II_of_France

I was in the same boat here as a great many, and your WECIB just makes you sound like a jerk. Your scoffing reference that Frederick I must suggest the famous Barbarossa of the HRE could equally be countered that Frederick II must be the enormously famous Frederick the Great of Prussia. It seems there may not be any King Henrys of Prussia (or Heinrich) but given those Princes linked above it's not exactly implausible. If you know the difference between the Hohenzollern and Hohenstauffen dynasties then more power to you but that's a pretty deep level of knowledge. For the rest of us plebes it would have been quite sporting for Thorsten to include any kind of date in this question.

Fair enough, Jeff. I had no intention of scoffing as I was genuinely perplexed by the low get rate. I see now that what I thought were pretty clear clues were not in fact as clear as I thought. It's better to be lucky than good and I have started out this season with a lot of guesses that have gone right. Sorry if I touched a nerve for anyone with my comments.

If the season keeps up like this, I'm gonna miss B... you don't get to make three mistakes and a BWA attempt in A and still pull a win.

Not sure which one I'm kicking myself over more: Well Tuned Clavier or Rope. (Mongolia for Korea is one of my more typical mistakes and isn't worthy for self-flagellation, not in the company of those other two whoppers...)

For completion's sake, Toni Tonytoné

Another Rope here. I was shocked when I saw it was wrong. Thought of Mongolia (and Manchuria and Tibet), but figured since Shimonoseki was Japanese, it was probably Korea. NHO Happy Fun Ball. Nor Toni whoever (like 95% of Llamas). Anyway, I knew going in I was going to lose given who I was playing, but I took a serious beatdown yesterday.

I had Hong Kong for Q2 yesterday and it seemed like a reasonable guess. Now I'm noticing the phrase "independence" which obviously should have steered me away. I have a feeling I may have fallen into the Mongolia trap had I realized my error, though.

Luckily I've seen "Rear Window" but not "Rope" so I didn't really need to think about that one.
